WWE Friday Night SmackDown Review: 27/10

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Contract Signing

Roman Reigns’ music hit to start this week’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown, but the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion’s entrance was interrupted by LA Knight who just walked straight past The Tribal Chief. LA then sat at The Head of the Table in an attempt to get under the skin of Roman Reigns before Knight signed the contract and told Roman that he will be taking his Title at Crown Jewel. Reigns laughed this off, but Knight continued to interrupt him before Reigns eventually attacked Knight, only for LA to get back at him. Jimmy Uso’s arrival then allowed Roman to retreat before LA Knight sent Jimmy through a table to end the segment. Roman Reigns Contract Signings have always been good fun and this was another example of that.

The LWO VS The Street Profits, Chelsea Green VS Shotzi

The first match of the night saw The LWO’s Carlito and Santos Escobar team up to take on The Street Profits who debuted new entrance music. This match was the typical okay opener to SmackDown that we’ve become used to by now and it was definitely a contest that was carried by Santos and Montez Ford. Rey Mysterio, who was watching this match from the back, was attacked from behind by Logan Paul and this distracted Carlito who must’ve been watching the big screen. He then left to go and check on Rey which left Santos Escobar at a 2-on-1 disadvantage which ultimately led to The Profits getting the victory. Usually, the best Heels are the ones that are correct, and if Santos Escobar turned Heel next week, he’d have every right to.

Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman decided to mock the Green Bay Packers because why not before Jimmy Uso walked in looking beat up. Roman didn’t care about this and told Jimmy to go handle LA Knight. Logan Paul then completely ignored Cathy Kelley backstage before he came face-to-face with Kevin Owens (that’s a match/feud I’d really like to see). Paul then walked off as KO was confronted by A-Town Down Under who questioned how Owens would be able to punch them both at the same time. Guess what, KO did. Kayla Braxton then interviewed Dragon Lee before Cedric Alexander walked in and challenged him to a match. I like Cedric so I had no real problem with this. Shotzi was then talking to Nick Aldis backstage before the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Chelsea Green and Piper Niven walked in because they weren’t happy that they weren’t the ones that were hosting NXT Halloween Havoc. This then led into a match between Miss Chelsea and Shotzi, and it wasn’t very good. Unfortunately, Shotzi still isn’t a particularly good in-ring performer and that hurt this contest massively. Shotzi was able to get the victory with a crucifix roll-up, but that made it even worse I think because I can’t understand why Chelsea Green loses so much.

John Cena Promo, Dragon Lee VS Cedric Alexander, Bianca Belair Promo

John Cena came out next to a big pop as the 16-time World Champion talked about how he has to beat Solo Sikoa at Crown Jewel next Saturday. This brought out Paul Heyman who told Cena that his best weapon is his ability to talk on the mic. However, that ability isn’t going to get him very far after Crown Jewel as he won’t be able to talk again after Solo Sikoa hits him with the Samoan Spike. Solo then ran down to the ring and dropped Cena with the Spike which was certainly interesting. This was alright, the stuff that Cena and Heyman said was quite good, but the idea that Sikoa is going to stop John Cena from being able to talk is a bit stupid considering I already think The Enforcer’s hit his finishing move on “The Greatest of All Time” about 5 times.

After LA Knight said he was going to beat Jimmy Uso in tonight’s Main Event, it was time for Dragon Lee to go one-on-one with Cedric Alexander. For me, this was comfortably the best match of the night. It didn’t go particularly long, but what we got here was a showcase of just how talented these men are. WWE are clearly pretty high on Dragon Lee so he was always going to get the win here, but the important thing is they made Cedric Alexander look good which is something I don’t think I’ve said since The Hurt Business broke up. Whilst this might not lead to anything, I’m hoping we get to see Cedric on TV more going forward.

Bianca Belair then came out to cut a promo where she talked about who she’s wanted to get revenge on Damage CTRL for months now. Belair also said that she wants to get her WWE Women’s Championship back which is why she’s talked to Nick Aldis and because of that, it’s now going to be Iyo Sky VS Bianca Belair for the WWE Women’s Championship at Crown Jewel. Bianca also said she’s going to beat Bayley next week. This was a short segment that didn’t have a lot in it, but it did give us our next Women’s Title feud so that's something.

Jimmy Uso VS LA Knight

The Main Event of this week’s Friday Night SmackDown saw Jimmy Uso try to take out LA Knight. This was okay, the crowd was into it which is always good, but I do feel like SmackDown matches tend to always go the same way. After Knight was able to kick out of the Uso Splash earlier in the match, The Megastar was able to drop Jimmy with the BFT to get the victory. After the match, Roman Reigns arrived to try and attack his latest challenger, but he failed as LA Knight moved out of the way and gave Reigns a BFT of his own to end the show standing tall over the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. This was simple, but that’s sometimes a good thing and I think this time is one of them.
