WWE Friday Night SmackDown Review: 10/01

Paul Heyman Starts the Show, Chelsea Green VS Michin: Women’s United States Championship

This week’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown kicked off with Paul Heyman as Paul talked about how Roman Reigns is officially “The One and Only” Tribal Chief! The Wiseman then asked for Cody Rhodes to come down to the ring as Heyman made it clear that Roman is now coming back for the Undisputed WWE Championship! Before Cody could say anything, Kevin Owens appeared to once again say how ridiculous all of this is before Rhodes and Owens brawled through the crowd as Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu arrived! Jimmy Uso then ran down to make the save, but it was ultimately The American Nightmare who returned and evened the odds! As always, Paul Heyman and Kevin Owens were the best parts of this segment.

After LA Knight helped security get rid of Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu, it was time for the first match of the night as Chelsea Green put her Women’s United States Championship on the line against Michin! This was a fine match, it wasn’t exactly needed as we’ve seen these two fight plenty of times, but it was alright! Piper Niven played a big role to, causing multiple distractions which ultimately opened the door for Green to retain via roll-up!

Los Garza VS Pretty Deadly, Shinsuke Nakamura VS LA Knight: United States Championship

Nick Aldis had a meeting with the SmackDown Tag Team Division to try and find some new Number 1 Contenders for DIY before Los Garza clashed with Pretty Deadly! These are two Heel teams that are well known for having a large playbook of different methods of cheating so it was interesting to see which team would go there first. In the end, after a competitive clash where it could’ve gone either way, Elektra Lopez and Santos Escobar got involved as Los Garza delivered their devastating finishing move onto Elton Prince to get the win!

It was then time to go straight into the next match as LA Knight looked to recapture the United States Championship from Shinsuke Nakamura! This was a pretty competitive match, both guys could’ve won here with the best moment coming when Knight put his foot on the rope following a Nakamura Kinshasa! The Megastar then bounced back to drop Shinsuke with a BFT, but The Bloodline arrived to get their revenge and cause the DQ finish! After the match, Cody Rhodes and Jimmy Uso appeared again to start a brawl before Cody asked Nick Aldis to book a Tag Team match for the Main Event!

A-Town Down Under VS Motor City Machine Guns, Bayley VS Bianca Belair VS Nia Jax VS Naomi: WWE Women’s Championship Number 1 Contender’s Match

After a recap of Tiffany Stratton’s cash-in from last week, it was time for some more Tag Team action as A-Town Down Under took on Motor City Machine Guns! Action-wise, this was definitely the best match of the night, it was strong throughout, MCMG are just so good at what they do, but ATDU also deserve a lot of credit too! Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Austin Theory, and Grayson Waller are also all very smart competitors meaning they would react better to “secret” tags, but in the end, it was Sabin and Shelley who got the win via Skull and Bones!

Pretty Deadly weren’t very impressed by DIY’s lack of help in their match with Los Garza before Apollo Crews came in to make his regular backstage opinion! Candice LeRae then told Nia Jax that Tiffany Stratton was heading down to the ring as Tiffany celebrated her WWE Women’s Championship victory by telling everyone in the world that it’s officially “Tiffy Time”! Stratton also said that she played Nia Jax the whole time which is when Nia arrived to say that she’s coming to take back what’s hers! Bayley then appeared to say she wants a Title shot which is exactly what Bianca Belair and Naomi did to the point where Nick Aldis just booked a Fatal 4-Way Number 1 Contender’s Match! This match got a lot of time, and there were some decent moments. However, it got very repetitive after a while because pretty much every pinfall would keep being broken up! There was also the weird dynamic of Naomi happily fighting Bayley, but not Bianca Belair despite Naomi and Bayley being more of a duo than The EST and The Glow! In the end, though, interference from Candie LeRae led to Belair accidentally whipping her Tag Team partner with her braid before Bayley took advantage to get the win via a Rose Plant! Another loss incoming for The Role Model!

Grade: C+ (Overall)

Cody Rhodes and Jimmy Uso VS The Bloodline

After Carmelo Hayes confronted Jimmy Uso and Bayley cut a promo, it was Main Event time as Cody Rhodes and Jimmy Uso teamed up to take on The Bloodline! The Bloodline got a lot of offense in here, with both Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu controlling Jimmy Uso for the large majority! Cody Rhodes then got the hot tag and ran wild, dropping Jacob with a Cody Cutter before Kevin Owens made his presence known! Rhodes then decided to brawl to the back with KO, leaving Jimmy all by himself as he got destroyed by Fatu, resulting in a win for The Bloodline! After the match, Cody and Kevin continued to brawl before they both took a nasty fall through a pair of tables! Once again, people were there for Cody Rhodes, but Cody Rhodes wasn’t there for them!
