WWE Friday Night SmackDown Review: 09/08

Cody Rhodes Starts the Show, A-Town Down Under VS The Street Profits

Friday Night SmackDown kicked off this week with Cody Rhodes in the ring as he wanted to talk about his next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Solo Sikoa then arrived to say he deserves a rematch which Cody rejected before The Bloodline were about to attack Rhodes, only for Kevin Owens to arrive with a pair of steel chairs. The Bloodline then left to look for Roman Reigns as The American Nightmare offered KO a shot at the World Title in Berlin, but Owens rejected it. This segment was totally fine, there wasn’t much to it, but I don’t really get why Cody Rhodes would offer Kevin Owens a Title shot given The Prizefighter’s record.

The first match of the night was then next as A-Town Down Under took on The Street Profits. This match was labelled as a Qualifying Match for a Number 1 Contender’s Match, and I thought this was decent enough. However, it didn’t really further the Austin Theory-Grayson Waller split which is interesting whilst it also ended pretty quickly after a Profits Super-Blockbuster. Fair enough!

Alba Fyre VS Jade Cargill, Andrade VS Santos Escobar: United States Championship Number 1 Contender’s Match, DIY VS Pretty Deadly

Kevin Owens made it very clear to Nick Aldis that he didn’t want a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship until Aldis brought up Roman Reigns getting a rematch. KO went completely off on one after this before a match between Cody and Kevin was agreed for Bash in Berlin. Tiffany Stratton was then planning Nia Jax’s celebration as we got the best interaction with Pretty Deadly before Chelsea Green and Piper Niven questioned Tiffany’s approach. YES GIRL! Anyway, Alba Fyre was out next as she was scheduled for a match with Jade Cargill. As expected, this went about 2 minutes and it saw Cargill dominate before she hit Jaded to score the 3 count. After the match, Blair Davenport came out to help the Heels, but it was Naomi’s arrival that ultimately allowed the Babyfaces to stand tall. What a waste of time this was!

LA Knight was in the ring next as he cut a celebratory promo about how he’s going to go and defend his United States Championship successfully. Santos Escobar then came out and cut a fun promo saying he’s the only person that deserves to be US Champion before Andrade came out as it was time for a one-on-one match to determine the brand-new Number 1 Contender. However, before that, we got a video package for none other than Giovanni Vinci which is automatically the best thing I’ve seen all year! Anyway, the match between Andrade and Santos was pretty decent, both guys are immensely talented, and this feels like a bit of a dream match for me. Both guys are also coming off wins last week which helps their cause, but in the end, it was the interference of both Elektra Lopez and Carmelo Hayes that ultimately opened the door for Escobar to nick a roll-up victory. Time for Knight-Escobar 5 I guess!

After Austin Theory got Grayson Waller a match with Kevin Owens, it was time for a definite dream match of mine as DIY clashed with Pretty Deadly! This was just fun, the wrestling was decent, but I like all four guys so much that I didn’t really care what was going on. Pretty Deadly’s entrance is definetly one of the best in the business whilst Tommaso Ciampa  and Johnny Gargano are so good in the ring! Despite PD pulling out some good offense, it was a Shatter Machine followed by Meet in the Middle that secured DIY the W!

Roman Reigns Comes Out to Solo Sikoa

The final segment of this week’s Friday Night SmackDown saw Solo Sikoa come down to the ring to ask for Acknowledgement before he called out Roman Reigns. Roman arrived to a ridiculously loud pop before he literally killed Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa with the steel steps. In fact, this was more Heel than anything Reigns did as a Heel! Anyway, Roman and Solo then started to brawl in the ring before Sikoa escaped as the Tongan’s gained up on The Original Tribal Chief. However, The Head of The Table easily wiped both men out before he destroyed Tonga Loa with a steel chair to end the segment standing tall! Roman Reigns being back is always going to be great, and he absolutely The Bloodline here!
