WWE Friday Night SmackDown Review: 05/07

Jey Uso Starts the Show, Pretty Deadly VS The Street Profits

WWE Friday Night SmackDown kicked off this week with Jey Uso as Jey talked about why he’s the man who’s going to win Money in the Bank tomorrow. LA Knight then came out and had a really good back-and-forth exchange with Uso before Carmelo Hayes arrived to say it’s his time. Chad Gable and Andrade also showed up pretty soon after to say their own piece before Drew McIntyre arrived and cut the best promo of them as he went after everyone except Master Gable (which is actually quite fitting when you think of it). In the end, a brawl broke out with Uso and Knight standing tall. This was a pretty standard segment, but I thought there were some really good lines that made it overall enjoyable.

Bayley talked about the Money in the Bank Ladder Match as Chelsea Green came over and said she’s going to be winning it. The Role Model laughed about it and got attacked by Piper Niven for her troubles. The WWE Women’s Champion then told Naomi that she has a match booked with Piper for later. Before all of that, though, it was time for the first match of the night as The Street Profits took on Pretty Deadly! This was a decent match, I always enjoy watching Kit Wilson and Elton Prince, and it was nice to see the Toronto crowd starting to get behind them a bit. Unfortunately for them, this match was more about giving The Street Profits a victory and that’s exactly what happened following a Montez Ford Frog Splash!

Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill VS Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell, Kevin Owens Promo, Bayley VS Piper Niven

Grayson Waller made it clear to Austin Theory that they need to get on the same page and he managed to convince Theory with some smart mind games before it was time for more Tag Team action as Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill took on Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell. I wasn’t a big fan of this match mainly because Candice and Indi got completely destroyed here, like they really didn’t get much offense in at all which I don’t think was the right way to go. Of course, Belair and Cargill picked up the pretty easy W before they said that they want their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships back.

Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, and Randy Orton were out next as they wanted to address The Bloodline for the final time ahead of their Six-Man Tag Team match at Money in the Bank. Cody and Randy said what you’d expect them to say, but KO went on about how his Mom has been in Hospital all week and that’s only fired him up to take down The Bloodline even more! I thought Owens delivered his promo brilliantly!

We got a great video package highlighting past Tag Team Champions (including The Bar) before Bayley’s music hit as the WWE Women’s Champion was about to go one-on-one with Piper Niven. I thought the action here was pretty decent, we already know that both women are talented competitors, but the focus was more on the outside as all of the competitors in this weekend’s Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match made their presence known, with Tiffany Stratton standing tall. Back in the ring, Bayley was able to pick up the win with a nasty-looking Rose Plant before she got floored by Nia Jax to end the segment!

WWE Tag Team Championships: A-Town Down Under VS DIY

And in the Main Event, the WWE Tag Team Championships were on the line as A-Town Down Under looked to retain over DIY! I really enjoyed this match, I thought the action was smooth throughout which isn’t a surprise given the history between all of these men, and there was also a strong story being told. Later on in the match, Grayson Waller accidentally clocked Austin Theory, but Theory continued to take bullets for Waller, and he also managed to just about save his partner following a Meet in the Middle from the challengers. It then happened again as Austin caught Grayson’s hand after Johnny Gargano locked in the Gargano Escape, but Tommaso Ciampa then locked in his own submission and this ultimately forced the Heels to tap meaning DIY are your new WWE Tag Team Champions! This felt like a big deal, was well deserved for DIY after years of carrying NXT, and furthered the split of A-Town Down Under! Oh, and Solo Sikoa then cut an amazingly shot video promo where he took shots at Roman Reigns and called himself The New Tribal Chief!
