What the 2023/24 Premier League Table Should've Been

At the start of the year, I made the decision to make a note of every terrible refereeing/VAR decision during the 2023/24 Premier League Season with the aim to go through them all at the end of the year. However, there ended up being way too many to write about so I changed the article into a “What Should’ve Been Table”. What that means is I’ve seen which teams gained more points than they should’ve and who lost more points than they deserved. Also, for the teams that had the same amount of points, I left whoever was ahead in real life on top. So yeah, let’s dive in shall we?!

20th: Sheffield United (13pts)

Over the course of this season, Sheffield United had 6 poor decisions go their way and 2 go against them and they ultimately gained 3 points from it. What this means is The Blades actually had an even worse season had things been done correctly!

19th: Luton (24pts)

Over the course of the season, Luton Town had 4 poor decisions go their way and 2 go against them and they ultimately gained 2 points from it. What this means is The Hatters should’ve finished a place lower in the Table, but they still definitely got Relegated!

18th: Burnley (33pts)

Over the course of the season, Burnley only had 1 poor decision go their way and they had 8 go against them which ultimately meant they lost 9 points from it! This is a really interesting one as I knew The Clarets had had some bad decisions go against them, and it’s really interesting to see that they probably could’ve stayed up had things been right!

17th: Nottingham Forest (33pts)

Over the course of the season, Nottingham Forest had 3 poor decisions go their way and 6 go against them, yet they only missed out on 1 singular point! What this means is Forest actually should’ve finished level on points in the Relegation fight, which is interesting!

16th: Brentford (41pts)

Over the course of the season, Brentford had 3 poor decisions go their way and 3 go against them which ultimately meant they missed out on 2 points. However, this doesn’t really affect much as The Bees still would’ve finished in the same spot.

15th: Everton (42pts)

Over the course of the season, Everton had 3 poor decisions go their way and 6 go against them, but they still only lost out on 2 points. What this means is The Toffees were unlucky, but it didn’t really hurt them.

14th: Bournemouth (43pts)

Over the course of the season, AFC Bournemouth had 7 poor decisions go their way and 5 go against them which meant they actually gained 5 more points than they should’ve! What this means is The Cherries should’ve finished two places lower than they actually did!

13th: Fulham (44pts)

Over the course of the season, Fulham had 4 poor decisions go their way and only 1 go against them which meant they gained 3 points. This is quite interesting as whilst The Cottagers should’ve had fewer points, their position wouldn’t have changed!

12th: Brighton (46pts)

Over the course of the season, Brighton and Hove Albion had 1 poor decision go their way and 2 go against them which is interesting because they actually gained 2 points. What that tells us is not only should The Seagulls have finished 1 place lower, but it also means that the decisions that went against them didn’t actually hurt them!

11th: Crystal Palace (49pts)

Over the course of the season, Crystal Palace had 1 poor decision go their way and didn’t have a single one go against them which meant they finished on the exact same total! What this means is The Eagles actually had a pretty straightforward year when it comes to dealing with the officials!

10th: Manchester United (49pts)

Over the course of the season, Manchester United had 7 poor decisions go their way and not a single one against them which meant they gained a massive 11 points! What this means is United should’ve had a much worse season than they did if it wasn’t for bad officiating.

9th: Newcastle (54pts)

Over the course of the season, Newcastle United had 3 poor decisions go their way and 3 go against them, even though they actually managed to gain 6 points which is quite interesting! What this means is The Magpies actually shouldn’t have finished inside the European places and also, it tells us that the decisions that went against them didn’t affect the outcome like the ones that did go their way!

8th: Wolves (56pts)

Over the course of the season, Wolverhampton Wanderers had 0 poor decisions go their way compared to 7 against them which meant they lost out on 10 points! What this means is Wolves should’ve finished some 6 places higher than they did and they should’ve been challenging for Europe!

7th: West Ham (56pts)

Over the course of the season, West Ham United had 4 poor decisions go their way and 5 go against them which meant they lost out on 4 points. What this means is The Hammers should’ve finished 2 places higher than they did and in the European places!

6th: Chelsea (64pts)

Over the course of the season, Chelsea had 1 poor decision go their way and 3 go against them which meant they ultimately lost out on a single point. To be honest, this didn’t really affect anything as The Blues still managed to finish in the same position!

5th: Tottenham (66pts)

Over the course of the season, Tottenham Hotspur had 2 poor decisions go their way and 3 go against them and it ultimately meant their points total didn’t change. This makes Spurs the only team that didn’t gain or lose anything from poor refereeing decisions this year!

4th: Aston Villa (66pts)

Over the course of the season, Aston Villa had 3 poor decisions go their way and 4 go against them yet they actually managed to gain 2 points. What this means is Villa’s poor decisions went more in their favour, and it also means that they could’ve easily finished outside of the Champions League spots!

3rd: Liverpool (84pts)

Over the course of the season, Liverpool had 7 poor decisions go their way compared to 2 against, but it’s interesting to note that they actually lost out on 2 points! This is fascinating and shows that the poor decisions in The Reds’ favour didn’t affect the results compared to the ones that did go against them!

2nd: Arsenal (86pts)

Over the course of the season, Arsenal had 6 poor decisions go their way and 5 go against them which meant they actually gained 3 points! Whilst this doesn’t affect The Gunners’ final position, it does mean that they should’ve been a lot further away from the Title than they obviously were.

1st: Manchester City (95pts)

Over the course of the season, Manchester City had 2 poor decisions go their way and 2 go against them, but they actually lost out on 4 points. What this means is City actually should’ve won the Title pretty comfortably, but they obviously still won it so it’s not the end of the world!
