UEFA Champions League Preview: Last 16, Leg 1

A.C Milan VS Tottenham


The knockout stages for this season’s UEFA Champions League kicks off in Italy as A.C Milan host Tottenham Hotspur at the San Siro. Milan are coming into this game off the back of a 1-0 win at home to Torino and they currently sit 5th in Serie A. Tottenham come into this game off the back of a 4-1 thrashing away to Leicester City and they currently sit 5th in the Premier League. AC Milan finished second in Group E with 10 points whilst Spurs finished top of Group D with 11 points. In their previous 4 meetings, Milan have failed to win a single game whilst Spurs have won 3 times. Overall, Both teams will fancy their chances in this one.

My Prediction: 1-0



PSG VS Bayern Munich


Two European Heavyweights collide as PSG host Bayern Munich in a really exciting matchup. PSG are coming into this game off the back of a 3-1 loss in Monaco and they currently sit top of Ligue 1. Bayern Munich come into this game off the back of a 3-0 win over VFL Bochum and they currently sit top of the Bundesliga. Paris Saint Germain finished second in Group H with 14 points whilst Bayern Munich finished top of Group C with 18 points (18-2 on aggregate). In their previous 6 meetings, PSG have won 2 times compared to Bayern’s 4. This includes Bayern Munich beating PSG in the 2019/20 Champions League Final. Overall, PSG are unbeaten in 17 home games whilst Bayern haven’t lost in their last 20 games so this should be a good one.

My Prediction: 2-2



Borussia Dortmund VS Chelsea


Borussia Dortmund host Chelsea in what promises to be a brilliant atmosphere. Borussia Dortmund are coming into this game off the back of a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen and they currently sit third in the Bundesliga. Chelsea come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw at West Ham and they currently sit 9th in the Premier League. Dortmund finished second in Group G with 9 points whilst Chelsea topped Group E with 13 points. This will be the first time that the two teams collide in the Champions League. Overall, Dortmund are on a 6 winning streak since the World Cup whilst Chelsea haven’t won any of their last 8 games away from home. Dortmund should fancy themselves in this one.

My Prediction: 3-1



Club Brugge VS Benfica


Club Brugge host Benfica in a big opportunity for both sides. Club Brugge are coming into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Union St.G and they currently sit 4th in the Belgium First Division. Benfica come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw away to Braga and they currently sit top of Liga Portugal. Club Brugge finished second in Group B with 11 points whilst Benfica topped Group H with 14 points. These two teams are yet to face one another in the Champions League. Overall, both teams have been on a good run and they know how important this game is for them.

My Prediction: 0-0



Frankfurt VS Napoli


Frankfurt and Napoli also find themselves with a great opportunity to make it to the Champions League Quarter Finals. Frankfurt play Werder Bremen before their first-ever Champions League knockout game and they currently sit 6th in the Bundesliga. Napoli go to Sassuolo on Friday and they currently sit top of Serie A (by 16 points)! Eintracht Frankfurt finished second in Group D with 10 points whilst Napoli topped Group A with 14 points. This will be another first-time Champions League matchup. Overall, Frankfurt are unbeaten in their last 8 home games whilst Napoli have won all 6 of their previous league games. I think this is the sleeper game of the whole round.

My Prediction: 2-3



Liverpool VS Real Madrid


Two of the biggest clubs in European Football history face off as Liverpool host Real Madrid at Anfield. Liverpool play both Everton and Newcastle before their game with Real Madrid and they currently sit 10th in the Premier League. Real Madrid have both Elche and Osasuna before their Champions League fixture and they currently sit second in La Liga. Liverpool finished second in Group A with 15 points whilst Real Madrid topped Group F with 13 points. In their previous 6 meetings, Liverpool have failed to win a single game whilst Madrid have picked up 5 wins including two Champions League finals (2017/18, 2021/22). Overall, neither team can afford to be eliminated at this stage of the competition.

My Prediction: 0-1



Inter Milan VS FC Porto


Inter Milan host FC Porto in yet another intriguing Last 16 matchup. Inter Milan play both Sampdoria and Udinese before Porto and they currently sit 2nd in Serie A. Porto host Rio Ave this Saturday and they currently sit second in Liga Portugal. Inter Milan finished second in Group C with 10 points whilst Porto topped Group B with 12 points. The two teams haven’t faced each other in the Champions League since the 2005/06 season. Overall, Inter are coming into this game off the back of 3 straight wins whilst Porto are unbeaten in 21 matches.

My Prediction: 1-1



RB Leipzig VS Manchester City


RB Leipzig host Manchester City in the final first leg tie in this year’s UEFA Champions League Last 16. RB Leipzig go to Wolfsburg on Saturday and they currently sit 5th in the Bundesliga. Manchester City play Arsenal and Nottingham Forest before their Champions League tie in Germany and they currently sit second in the Premier League. Leipzig finished second in Group F with 12 points whilst Manchester City topped Group G with 14 points (14-2 on aggregate). In their previous 2 meetings, both sides have picked up 1 win each (2021/22 CL Group Stage). Overall, this should be a good game.
