In the final weekend of Season 10 of ABB FIA Formula E, it was all to play for in both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships heading into London!
Winner: Pascal Wehrlein
We just have to start with your brand-new ABB FIA Formula E World Champion, Pascal Wehrlein! Pascal headed into the weekend third in the Championship, and some would argue that he was probably the 4th-most likely to ultimately end the weekend as Champion! However, a brilliant win on Saturday saw him take the lead of the Standings heading into the final Round, and whilst he was running third for the large majority of proceedings, that wasn’t enough for Wehrlein to take the Championship Title. However, issues for his Title Rivals (we’ll get onto them later) saw Pascal Wehrlein come home in second to make sure that he will always be remembered as a World Champion! A massive congratulations to Pascal!
Loser: Nick Cassidy
After being so brilliant for so long, the ending to Nick Cassidy’s season has been a disaster! Nick had a horrible time in Saturday Qualifying, and he really struggled to make any progress during the Race. However, there were that many incidents in that Race that Cassidy was still able to bag an important 6 points, even if it meant he went from first to third heading into Sunday! Cassidy’s Sunday also started perfectly, with him taking Pole Position and another key 3 points, and he was looking in the prime spot to take victory and win his first FE World Title until The Kiwi got took out from behind and ultimately retired after initially receiving a puncture! What a disaster the last two weekend’s have been for Nick Cassidy!
Winner: Sebastien Buemi
Sebastien Buemi ended his season on a much-needed high! Sebastien drove a smart and clean Race on Saturday to take his first Podium since Mexico City (Round 1) before he drove an equally smart and clean Race to come home 4th in the Season Finale! That is a very impressive set of results for Buemi, and those 27 points have actually seen him rise into the Top Half of the Drivers’ Standings which is a nice way to end!
Loser: Jake Dennis
My oh my, Jake Dennis’ last weekend with the Number 1 on his car didn’t go to plan at all! Saturday was a bit of a mess, with Jake getting involved in multiple incidents and picking up 20 seconds worth of time penalties that dropped him from P5 to P16! And on Sunday, Dennis only got to drive a lap before he got put in the wall by Edoardo Mortara! So yeah, what a disaster it’s been for the Season 9 Champ since Monaco!
Winners and Losers: Jaguar TCS Racing
What an odd weekend Jaguar TCS Racing had! On the one hand, they managed to see both of their drivers lose out on being crowned World Champion! On the other hand, they scored 2 Podiums and won the Teams’ Championship which is a pretty big deal! For the drivers, they’ll be disappointed, but as a team, being crowned as the best team in the series is a heck of an accomplishment and they should be delighted with themselves!
Winner and Loser: Oliver Rowland
After missing the Portland E-Prix weekend due to illness, it became clear that it was going to be very difficult for Oliver Rowland to have any chance of being crowned Formula E World Champion by the end of the weekend. Rowland then guaranteed that statement by punting Antonio Felix da Costa out of the Saturday Race, a move which he later received a penalty for! However, in the Season Finale, Ollie Rowland drove a superb Race, stayed out of trouble, and took advantage of the cars ahead thinking about the Title to take a victory that ultimately saw him finish 4th in the Championship! Now that is impressive stuff!
Winner and Loser: Mitch Evans
And finally, let’s talk about Mitch Evans! Now, in isolation, Mitch had a pretty good weekend as he secured Podium finishes on both the Saturday and the Sunday. He also managed to beat his teammate in the Championship which is always a positive! However, Evans once again managed to just miss out on a Formula E World Title, and this is one he really should’ve won! With just a few laps to go, Mitch was in a Championship-winning position, but he unbelievably managed to miss his Attack Mode activation meaning when he went round to do it again, he was now behind Pascal Wehrlein! And to make matters worse for The Kiwi, he had to back the pack up in order to not get disqualified, so all in all, it’s another tough end to the year for a driver that is more than good enough to be a World Champion!
