Spanish Grand Prix Race Review

Linus O'Howell

Verstappen cruises home to take a comfortable victory in Spain

Max Verstappen once again looked a class above the rest as he cruised to take victory in Spain by over 24 seconds. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished P2 whilst teammate George Russell picked up a very impressive first Podium of the year.

The Most Notable Moments

Lando Norris collided with the back of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes which forced the McLaren driver to box for a new front wing at the end of Lap 1. There was plenty of overtaking in the lower positions, especially between the Haas’, Alpha Tauri’s and Alfa Romeo’s. However, Max Verstappen had already checked out at the front of the grid whilst Aston Martin and Ferrari were struggling for pace. This allowed Lewis Hamilton to get himself up into P2 whilst George Russell, who started the race from P12, was now running inside the Podium places. Sergio Perez had managed to climb his way through the field, but he was struggling to catch George Russell at a quick enough pace whilst Charles Leclerc was struggling to even make it into the points! Yuki Tsunoda and Zhou Guanyu battled for P9 before Tsunoda was given a 5-second time penalty for forcing Zhou off the track. This was one of those occasions where it was so hard to judge.

The Standout Drives in the Race

I’ve given out a total of three 10’s for this race and obviously the first one goes to Max Verstappen. He’s just driving perfect races at the moment and I can’t see anyone stopping him as things stand. I’ve also given a 10 to Lewis Hamilton who got the maximum out of his car and then some whilst George Russell fully deserves the highest possible grade for going from 12th to 3rd. I also thought Zhou Guanyu had a great race to bring home a couple of points for Alfa Romeo.

Drivers who had a Horror Race

In total, I’ve given out four 1’s for this race. The first one is unfortunately for Lando Norris who started 3rd and finished 17th. Whilst the first lap incident wasn’t necessarily Lando’s fault, he really struggled to climb his way back through the field. I’ve also given out a 1 to Kevin Magnussen who has just been horrendous all weekend whilst Valtteri Bottas had another shocker and he really needs to start putting in better results/performances or otherwise, his race seat should be in jeopardy. Finally, Logan Sargeant is the last driver I’ve given a 1 to and it’s definitely starting to look a bit worrying for the American rookie.
