Reacting to My 2024 FIA Formula 2 Predictions

Linus O'Howell

Back in February of last year, I made my Predictions for the upcoming FIA Formula 2 Season, and it’s safe to say that an awful lot happened! Now, with the off-season in full effect, I thought this would be the perfect time to React to those Predictions, and see if I did any better than usual! So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

P22: Joshua Durksen

Oh my, we’re off to a great start here! I firmly expected Joshua Durksen to be nowhere in Formula 2, due to his lack of results in other categories mixed with the team he was at. However, Joshua made me look dumb (not very hard, but still) by finishing 10th in the Standings with 2 wins to his name! It can only go up from here (I hope)!

P21: Rafael Villagomez

I expected nothing from Rafael Villagomez, and in turn he did even worse as he ended up 24th in the Standings! Rafael was easily the worst driver that completed a full season, and the fact he got beat by drivers who did plenty of Races less than him is simply not good enough!

P20: Amaury Cordeel

I wasn’t right with this one as Amaury Cordeel ended up 17th in the Championship with 39 points to his name! I very much didn’t expect that from Cordeel, so I got that one wrong, but it’s still not been a very impressive year for the Belgian!

P19: Roman Stanek

I was wrong with Roman Stanek, for multiple reasons! Firstly, Roman finished 22nd in the Standings, so worse than I expected! However, Stanek was dropped for the final 3 Rounds of the year, and he also won in Australia so a lot of things happened in 2024!

P18: Juan Manuel Correa

Yes, my first correct Prediction! I didn’t think Juan Manuel Correa’s talent was as strong compared to the rest of the Formula 2 Grid, and whilst that was true, Correa did still manage to get back on the Podium in Spain whilst he also missed the final 2 Rounds which certainly didn’t help his course!

P17: Taylor Barnard

If you know me, you will know that I rate Taylor Barnard very highly, hence why I had him to finish up in P17. What actually happened is Taylor finished 21st in the Standings, but that was mostly because he missed the final 4 Rounds of the year to focus on Formula E! Also, Barnard was able to take a victory in Monaco so that shows just how talented he is!

P16: Isack Hadjar

Oh my! After a disappointing first year in Formula 2 mixed with the fact that he moved teams, I thought Isack Hadjar was going to go backwards and be done with Red Bull! Instead, Isack finished 2nd in the Championship, winning 4 Races (all Feature), and he’s now racing for Visa Cash App RB in Formula 1 this year! Aren’t I great (I’m literally banging my head on the table)?!

P15: Pepe Marti

I wasn’t too far off with Pepe Marti as the Spaniard ended up 14th in the Standings with a win to his name (Abu Dhabi Sprint)! However, what I was wrong with is I said that Pepe would be the lead Campos driver, and that definitely didn’t happen!

P14: Paul Aron

And we’re straight back at it! I like Paul Aron, and I rate him as a driver, go and look back at my 2023 Formula 3 Predictions, I had him up in third. However, for whatever reason, I thought the fact that Paul was at Hitech plus he’d been dropped by Mercedes meant he wasn’t going to have a great year. Instead, he had a brilliant year as Aron fired to third in the Championship so what do I know?!

P13: Richard Verschoor

Richard Verschoor had another strong year in Formula 2, and that ultimately led to him finishing 5 places higher up in P8! I thought Richard would have a decent season, but I’d say a win and another 5 Podiums results to a good year for Verschoor!

P12: Jak Crawford

Another driver I predicted badly wrong was Jak Crawford! I was intrigued to see how Jak would get on given he’d left the Red Bull Family, but I still thought he’d be somewhere mid pack! However, Crawford had a great year which saw him finish 5th in the Championship and ahead of drivers that now find themselves in Formula 1!

P11: Enzo Fittipaldi

I thought Enzo Fittipaldi would drop off slightly from his strong 2023 campaign, but he actually went further down the order as Enzo only managed to finish 15th in the Standings! However, Fittipaldi did miss the final 2 Rounds of the year which definitely didn’t help matters, and he also won in Saudi so there were positives!

P10: Franco Colapinto

I nearly lucked my way into this one! I said at the start of 2024 that Franco Colapinto had a lot of potential and could have a very bright future ahead of him, and I mean he had a great stint in Formula 2, ultimately finishing 9th in the Championship despite missing the final 4 Rounds of the year! Of course, though, everyone will know about Franco stepping up to Williams after the F1 Summer Break, and I definitely didn’t predict that one!

P9: Dennis Hauger

Thankfully, I didn’t go with Dennis Hauger to win Formula 2 this season (unlike in both 2022 and 2023)! I was actually close here as Dennis finished 11th in the Standings whilst also missing the final 2 Rounds of the year, so it really was a “nearly” Prediction for a guy that’s sort of had a “nearly” career!

P8: Gabriel Bortoleto

As always, I’m unable to correctly predict the FIA Formula 2 Champion! I expected Gabriel Bortoleto to have a positive first year in Formula 2 before he embarks on a Title challenge in 2025! Instead, Bortoleto just went and won the whole thing because he’s just that good! Cannot wait to see how Gabby Bortoleto gets on in Formula 1!

P7: Kush Maini

This is not good! Firstly, Kush Maini was nowhere near to finishing 7th in the Championship as he ultimately ended up 13th! However, that’s not the terrible part of this Prediction, it’s the fact I thought Kush would finish ahead of his Invicta Virtuosi teammate, and instead, he finished 140+ points behind his teammate who won the whole thing! Great!

P6: Zane Maloney

I rated Zane Maloney, but not enough as he ended up 4th in the Championship! Zane had a good year, winning the opening two Races of the year in Bahrain, and he did ultimately miss the final round to debut with Lola-Yamaha ABT in ABB FIA Formula E! I’m actually fine with being wrong here as Maloney is a very good driver!

P5: Zak O’Sullivan

I could cry! I had such big expectations for Zak O’Sullivan, I rated his Junior Career very highly, and I thought Zak being in ART would gel really well! However, O’Sullivan ran out of funding after Monza and it meant he couldn’t compete in the rest of the 2024 Season, finishing 16th overall! This really does suck!

P4: Andrea Kimi Antonelli

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, perhaps the hardest driver to predict in this staked field! Ultimately, I wasn’t too far away as Kimi finished 6th in the Standings, winning twice, and it’s also worth mentioning the fact that he missed the final weekend in Abu Dhabi due to illness (so he potentially could’ve finished 5th)! I’m honestly satisfied with this one, it’s not correct, but I’m okay with it! Stay tuned for where I put Antonelli in my F1 Predictions down the line!

P3: Ritomo Miyata

No! Ritomo Miyata was the driver I was most excited to watch in Formula 2 last year, he smashed Japan, and I expected big things, even though I did acknowledge that adapting to Europe could be a little tricky! However, my Prediction of Ritomo being the Rookie of the Year was a complete and utter flop as Miyata ended up 19th in the Championship without a single Podium to his name! Yikes!

P2: Oliver Bearman

Yeah, I knew this one was coming! Arguably, Oliver Bearman’s stock grew in 2024, appearing in Formula 1 on 3 separate weekends, and impressing for both Ferrari and Haas! However, in F2, things didn’t go well for Bearman at all as he was comprehensively beaten by his Rookie teammate, and he ultimately finished 12th in the Standings! It’s safe to say that if it was based on Formula 2 alone, Ollie Bearman did not earn his spot on the Formula 1 Grid (but of course, it’s not, and my Prediction is still massively wrong)!

P1: Victor Martins

Another year, another time where I curse my pick to win FIA Formula 2! Victor Martins did not have a good start to the year at all, it took him 11 Races to stand on the top step of the Podium (or the Podium in general), and despite a stronger second part of the year, Martins could still only manage 7th in the Championship! The funniest thing about this is that 7th is actually the highest the person I’ve picked to win F2 has finished (I should just stop)!
