Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 8

Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United

Manchester City showcased why even though they aren’t top of the table, they are still the team to beat in the Premier League. Erling Haaland scored a third consecutive hattrick at the Etihad and the goals showcased all his different talents. His first goal was a header, his second goal saw him put the ball home after an incredible ball from Kevin De Bruyne and his hattrick goal was a superb finish. He even earnt himself an incredible assist as he played a beautiful pass across to Phil Foden. Foden, who knows the importance of this Derby better than anyone on the City side, also managed a hattrick and all 3 of his goals were nicely taken. Man City stay in second place, 1 point of the top and host both Copenhagen and Southampton this week. As for Manchester United, they were decimated in the first half. It was a massive shame for them given how well they had been playing. However, there are some positives to take out of the game. Anthony scored a brilliant goal and Martial came on and looked good. His penalty was sublime too. United still sit sixth in the table and after they play in the Europa League on Thursday, they face Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday Night.

Liverpool 3-3 Brighton

Liverpool and Brighton played out an enthralling six goal game that saw both teams leave with a point. After just 4 minutes, Leandro Trossard put Brighton ahead. After 17 minutes, Trossard put the visitors two nil up. Roberto Firmino managed to get one back for Liverpool after a brilliant bit of play from Mohamed Salah and in the second half, Firmino scored again with a really nice finish. In the 64th minute, Liverpool fully turned the game around after an Adam Webster own goal. It was unfortunate for the centre half but, the goalkeeping from Sanchez was shocking. However, the Seagulls refused to go home with nothing as Leandro Trossard completed his hattrick. The draw sees Liverpool sit in 9th whilst Brighton stay fourth. Liverpool host Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday before they take on the league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Brighton host Spurs next Saturday knowing a win could potentially see them move above the North London side.

Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham

It was party time for Arsenal as they beat their biggest rivals to stay at the top of the Premier League table. Arsenal took the lead just before the 20th minute through an absolute stunner from Thomas Partey. Gabriel then committed a silly foul on Richarlison which gifted Tottenham a penalty. Kane put the ball straight down the middle and the North London Derby was level again. However, at the start of the second half, Hugo Lloris made a couple of bad errors which allowed Gabriel Jesus to tap the ball home from about 3 yards. A terrible moment for the Tottenham Captain. It then got worse for Spurs as Emerson Royal was shown a straight red card for a pretty poor challenge. Granit Xhaka then made it 3-1 in the 67th minute to finish the game off. Arsenal stay atop of the Premier League with 21 points from a possible 24. They host Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday before facing Liverpool on Sunday. If they win that, maybe they are genuine title challengers. As for Spurs, it was a bad day for them, and they need to try and bounce back. They travel to Germany to take on Frankfurt before they face Brighton at the AMEX Stadium in a fourth V third matchup.

Fulham 1-4 Newcastle

Fulham’s good start to the season was rather halted by a dominant Newcastle United. It started horribly for the host as after just six minutes, Nathaniel Chalobah was shown a straight red card for a pretty dangerous tackle. Then, just 5 minutes later, Callum Wilson put Newcastle in front with a simple tap-in. Miguel Almiron then made it 2-0 with an incredible volleyed strike before Sean Longstaff made it 3-0 right before halftime. Almiron then got his second and Newcastle’s fourth in the 57th minute but quite disappointingly, they weren’t able to keep hold of their clean sheet as Bobby Reid headed the ball home with less than with 3 minutes to go to give the Fulham crowd something to cheer about. This was the kind of the result I’ve been expecting to happen to Fulham, but it hasn’t because they have been excellent. They need to try and get over this result and performance because they are still sitting in a really good 8th place and would still be in the top 10 even if everyone who has game in hands win them. They play away to West Ham next Sunday in another London Derby. As for Newcastle, this was a terrific performance and they have moved into 7th place as a result of it. Their next game is at home to Brentford and they really should be winning that one too.

Leicester City 4-0 Nottingham Forest

Leicester picked up their first win of the season with an emphatic victory over Nottingham Forest. Leicester had a couple of early chances that they weren’t able to take before Taiwo Awoniyi hit the post for the visitors. A big chance for them. Then, just a couple of minutes later, James Maddison put the hosts ahead. After a terrible clearance from Jesse Lingard, Maddison’s shot deflected of Scott McKenna leaving Goalkeeper Dean Henderson no chance. Just 2 minutes later, the ball was back in the Nottingham Forest net, this time from a brilliant strike from Harvey Barnes. It then got even better for Leicester as James Maddison scored the goal of the night with a brilliant freekick strike. In the 77th minute, Patson Daka pilled even more misery onto Notts Forest with a nice finish. This was exactly the result and performance that Leicester needed. They are no longer outright bottom of the Premier League, and they travel to Bournemouth next time out. The question is, can they keep this level of performance up. As for Nottingham Forest, they’ve now lost their last 5 games and they look in big trouble. They now sit bottom of the Premier League and they once again host Monday Night Football, this time against Aston Villa.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea

In Graham Potter first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea, the Blues picked up a big win against London rivals Crystal Palace. Palace got off to a great start as Odsonne Edouard put the hosts ahead after just 7 minutes. Chelsea and Thiago Silva then received a massive stroke of luck as he was only showed a yellow card for what seemed to be the denial of a goal scoring opportunity. In my opinion, he should have seen red. Silva then played a big part in Chelsea’s equaliser as his header found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who nicely scored on his Premier League debut for Chelsea. And then, in the 90th minute, Conor Gallagher scored and absolutely stunner for his first ever Chelsea goal in a stadium he loves to give his side maximum points against a club he became a star for. It was written perfectly for him really. The defeat for Crystal Palace sees them drop to 17th. They host Leeds next time out in a game they kind of need to win. As for Chelsea, they move up to 5th and host Wolves next week after a Champions League game against A.C. Milan.

Southampton 1-2 Everton

Two goals in 2 minutes saw Everton pick up their first away win of the season. Early in the second half (49th minute), Joe Aribo put Southampton in front with a strike from inside the box. However, Everton were level just 3 minutes later through Conor Coady, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain was left unmarked, and he was able to simply place the ball home at the back post. Southampton then had 3 chances, but they were all blocked and then, Everton went up the other end of the pitch and scored through Dwight McNeil. Southampton created even more chances, but they just weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net meaning Everton left St. Mary’s with all 3 points. Southampton have now lost 3 games in a row against teams you’d think they’d be able to get a result out of and they sit 16th as a result of it. It’s not going to get any easy for the Saints as their next fixture sees them playing at the Etihad Stadium. As for Everton, they have now won 2 games in a row and sit in a pretty good 11th place. They host Manchester United in their next game.

West Ham 2-0 Wolves

In the battle of the underperforming teams, West Ham won out 2-0. Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring with a lovely strike in only his second Premier League start. And then, 10 minutes into the second half, Jarrod Bowen scored to put them 2-0 up. As much as you could be positive about Bowen, the defending on Wolves’ part was bad. Ait Nouri didn’t do his job well and Sa shouldn’t be beaten on the near post. Diego Costa had a good chance, but his header went just wide of the post and Wolves also had a goal disallowed due to offside. This was a big win for the Hammers as they now move up to 15th in the table. They face Anderlecht in Belgium on Thursday before they host Fulham in the Prem next Sunday. As for Wolves, they now sit in the relegation zone and will look to bounce back next week against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds 0-0 Aston Villa

The Second game on Super Sunday saw Leeds and Aston Villa play out a feisty 0-0 draw. Villa could have taken the lead if it wasn’t for Phillipe Coutinho’s slip. Luis Sinisterra was then sent off. If he was told to move back, then he looks like an idiot. If he wasn’t, I actually don’t really know what he did wrong. Villa then had an incredible chance, but Phillipe Coutinho hit the post and Ollie Watkins missed the rebound. Overall, there were six yellow cards, one red card but no goals. Leeds are without a win in their last 4 games and sit 12th because of it. They play away to Crystal Palace next week in a game both sides will fancy their chances. As for Aston Villa, they’ve earnt a pretty solid 5 points in their last 3 games and sit 14th as a result of it. They play away to Nottingham Forest next Monday Night in a game I know my Grandad can’t wait to watch.

Bournemouth 0-0 Brentford

Bournemouth and Brentford will both have mixed feelings about taking a point home. Bournemouth were furious that they weren’t given a penalty but, it looked like the defender got the ball. Bournemouth then came close, but Ivan Toney managed to clear the ball of the line to keep the game all square and speaking of Ivan Toney, he had a brilliant chance, but he wasn’t able to take it which is a surprise given his ruthless touch. For Bournemouth, they will feel fine with a point. It’s a game they could have won but they also could have easily lost it. They sit in a pretty good 13th. As for Brentford, they can’t be too annoyed with a point but they did seem to be the better team so that will be a bit frustrating. They sit 10th in the table.
