Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 5

*This list only contains the 9 games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Leicester VS Manchester United won’t feature because I don’t have enough time to right about it.

Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

Manchester City dominated Nottingham Forest in a 6-0 thrashing at the Etihad. Erling Haaland scored a hattrick for the second time in two halves. All three goals where typical centre forwards tapping the ball home from close distance. Joao Cancelo then scored with a brilliant strike in the second half before Julian Alvarez scored his first ever Premier League goals to give them a super 6. Overall, City had 75% of the ball and will be very happy with their performance. They stay second place, 2 points of the top of the table and they play away from home at Aston Villa on Saturday Night Football. As for Nottingham Forest, they knew this was going to be tough and it was a realisation that if you want to be back in the Premier League, these results are going to happen. At least they didn’t lose 9-0 though! Forest sit 15th in the table with 4 points and host Bournemouth on Saturday in a game they should be getting a result from.

Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

Liverpool snatched a victory with practically the last kick of the game to beat a devastated Newcastle United. Liverpool dominated the ball had 18 more chances than Newcastle but, Newcastle’s new striker Aleksandar Isak scored on his debut too silence the Anfield crowd. Isak then scored again but it was ruled out by a very, very tight offside decision. Bobby Firmino then levelled the game up for the Reds and in the 97th minute, Fabio Carvalho, on his 20th birthday, scored to bag Liverpool all 3 points. There was more controversy over this as there was only meant to be 5 minutes of additional. Liverpool won’t care though as they move up to a more respectable 5th place before their Merseyside derby at Goodison Park this Saturday. Newcastle will feel very annoyed about this result, due to both the decisions that they will feel went against them but also, they fact that they just couldn’t quite hold on to get a really good result. Newcastle now drops to 11th in the table, and they host Crystal Palace this Saturday.

Fulham 2-1 Brighton

Fulham keep up their really positive start to the season with a big win over Brighton and Hove Albion. Fulham took the lead with their main man Aleksandar Mitrovic getting onto the score sheet for the fourth time this season. Less than 10 minutes later, Fulham where two nil up after a very unfortunate block from Lewis Dunk ended up in the back of the net. Alexis Mac Allister smashed the ball home from the penalty spot to put Brighton back in it but in the end, the London side held on to take all 3 points. Fulham currently sit 7th in the table on 8 points before they face a very difficult task away to Tottenham Hotspur. It was a disappointing loss as a victory would have seen them go top of the league at the end of Tuesday night, but they still sit 4th in the table, and they host Leicester City on Sunday.

Southampton 2-1 Chelsea

It was a mega day for Southampton as they managed to upset Chelsea on Tuesday night and move into the top half of the table. Chelsea took the lead with Raheem Sterling who seems to be playing well so far at Chelsea. It was another former Manchester City man who got on the score sheet as Romeo Lavia levelled the game up for the Saints with a lovely strike, just 5 minutes after Chelsea took the lead. Then in additional time at the end of the first half, Adam Armstrong put the hosts in front with a calm finish. No goals in the second half meant all 3 points stayed at St. Mary’s. This was a terrific result for Southampton who have now moved up to 8th in the table with 7 points. They play away to struggling Wolves on Saturday where they should believe that they can get a result. As for Chelsea, they are really not performing as well as they should be, and they sit 9th in the table because of it. Chelsea go back home to play West Ham in a London Derby.

Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

Arsenal made it 5 wins out of 5 but they had to work for it against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa. Arsenal should have been ahead but Bukayo Saka somehow managed to miss an open goal from about 5 yards out. Arsenal did take the lead however, as Gabriel Jesus scored his third Premier League goal of the season with a proper poacher's goal but it was a poor mistake from Martinez in goal. Villa then punished Arsenal lack of killer instinct in front of goal with a Douglas Luiz goal that came direct from a corner. This is the second time he has done this in the past 8 days. It didn’t make much difference though as Gabriel Martinelli scored the winning goal less than 3 minutes later to keep Arsenal’s 100% record intact in another goal that Martinez shouldn’t have allowed to go in. Arsenal stay top before their big clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. Another defeat for Aston Villa means that they now sit in the relegation zone and a win for Leicester tonight would see Aston Villa sit bottom of the table. Villa face a very difficult task when they host Manchester City on Saturday.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

Tottenham took the lead in the London Derby after another own goal by Thilo Kehrer. There wasn’t really much that the former PSG man could do as if he missed the ball, Heung Min Son would have had a tap in. In the second half, West Ham equalised with Tomas Soucek. The assist by Michael Antonio was really special. After a tough start to the season, West Ham have earnt themselves four points out of a possible six and they now sit 14th in the table. The Hammers participate in another London derby on Saturday as they play away to Chelsea. As for Spurs, they will be frustrated to drop points but, on another day, they could have lost this game so they can’t be too disappointed. They are still unbeaten, and they sit third in the table on 11 points. They host Fulham on Saturday in another London derby.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Brentford

Brentford scored another late goal to snatch a point away from home against Crystal Palace. Michael Olise was very unlucky to see his shot hit the outside of the post. Palace still managed to take the lead though with a brilliant strike from Wilfred Zaha to but the Seagulls ahead. However, in the 87th minute, Yoane Wissa was unmarked and scored a header from just outside the six-yard box to level the game for the Bees. Brentford then could have won the game, but Guiata pulled off a really good save and Ben Mee hit the crossbar from a corner. Palace will be disappointed that they didn’t manage to get all 3 points and they now sit in 13th place with 5 points. Their next game is away to Newcastle United. As for Brentford, they are 10th in the table, and they host Leeds United in their next game.

Leeds 1-1 Everton

Everton took the lead with Anthony Gordon who looks to be staying at the club. It was a nice finish from the young attacker, but it was terrible defender by Diego Llorente. Luis Sinisterra then scored to get the hosts back on level terms in a strange goal that comfortably beat Jordan Pickford. Pickford then pulled out a really good save to keep the game at 1 all. 8 points from their first 5 games is still a very positive start for Leeds United as they sit 6th in the table, and they have a tricky fixture away from home against Brentford this Saturday. As for Everton, they are still without a win, but they are outside the relegation zone which is something. There next game is a big one as they host Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Bournemouth 0-0 Wolves

Gary O’Neil took charge of Bournemouth in this game and managed to get them a point against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bournemouth conceded 9 against Liverpool so they were always going to be struggling with confidence whilst Wolves needed to get their first victory of the season. Matheus Nunes hit the crossbar after a really nice strike. Dominic Solanke had Bournemouth’s best chance, but his header was comfortably saved by Jose Sa. Raul Jimenez, who has scored in every game he has played against Bournemouth, really should have put the visitors in front but his shot went wide of the post. Brilliant defending from Bournemouth stopped Podence’s header from going in. Bournemouth will take the point as they now sit in 16th place, and they play fellow promoted side Nottingham Forest on Saturday at the City Ground. It was another disappointing display in the attacking areas for Wolverhampton Wanderers and they sit 18th place, still without a win. They host Southampton on Saturday in a must win tie.
