Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 4

Manchester City 4-2 Crystal Palace

The Etihad stadium hosted a crazy matchup between Manchester City and Crystal Palace. In recent seasons, Palace have done pretty well against Man City, and they were ahead inside 4 minutes after a John Stones own goal. It then got even better for the Eagles as Centre back Joachim Andersen headed home from a corner to put his team 2-0 in front. Bernardo Silva then got City back into with a goal that deflected off a Palace player, a frustrating way to concede for the visitors. It was then time for City’s new number 9 Erling Haaland to show everyone his ability as the striker scored a 19-minute hattrick. His first and second goals where typical poachers' goals as he was there to put the ball into the back of the net. His third goal though, was superb. The way he holds the defenders off before calmly placing it into the bottom left-hand corner was world class. This win takes City onto 10 points and keeps them in second place. City host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday in their next game. As for Crystal Palace, they will be frustrated that they let a 2-goal lead slip, but they can still take a lot of positives from the game. It’s impressive that they scored 2 goals considering the fact that there xG was 0.12. Palace sit 12th in the table and will host Brentford tomorrow.

Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth

Liverpool absolutely destroyed Bournemouth on Saturday. A 9-0 win is pretty crazy. Liverpool needed to bounce back, and they did that and then some. There where so many standout players but the best player on the day was Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian scored twice and also bagged himself 3 assists. Trent Alexander Arnold scored the best goal of the game with a brilliant strike on the 28th minute. Fabio Carvalho also managed to score his first ever Liverpool goal with a really nice volley. This was exactly the result that Liverpool needed, and it has boosted them up into 9th place in the table. Liverpool’s next match is an exciting home game against Newcastle United. Bournemouth needed to get out of the last three games without getting decimated and even though they were comfortably beaten by Manchester City and Arsenal, they weren’t humiliated, but they were on Saturday. Their confidence has to have taken a massive hit now and Scott Parker will need to lift the team up if they want to get back to getting positive results. They sit 17th in the table with a -14 goal difference! They host fellow strugglers Wolves on Wednesday.

Arsenal 2-1 Fulham

Arsenal kept their 100% record going but it wasn’t easy. A poor mistake from Gabriel meant that Aleksandar Mitrovic put the visitors ahead. Martin Odegaard then levelled the game for the Gunners to continue his good run of form, but Fulham will be gutted with the deflection of Tosin which meant the ball went past the Goalkeeper. Gabriel, who made the mistake earlier on, made up for it with an 85th minute winner after a pretty poor mistake by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Arsenal managed 72% possession in the game but where only just victorious. Arsenal will be glad that they got out of the game with all 3 points and look to continue their 100% winning start when they host Aston Villa on Wednesday Night. Fulham will be frustrated with the goals they conceded and it’s kind of been the story of their season so far. They are 11th place, but they could easily be higher. Tomorrow, they host highflying Brighton at 7:30.

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

It was double delight for Harry Kane as his two goals gave his Spurs team all 3 points. Spurs got off to a great start with a goal inside 5 minutes and Kane finished the game off with an 81st minute header. The only thing that Harry Kane will be frustrated with is the fact that he missed a penalty. There were 35 shots in total between the two sides yesterday yet only one team got on the score sheet. Dean Henderson was once again the star player for Forest and his saves where the reason why Forest where still in the game for as long as they where. Forest knew that this game was going to be tough, and they know sit 14th in the table. It doesn’t get any easier on Wednesday though as they travel to take on the Champions at the Etihad Stadium. Tottenham, on the other hand, will be delighted with this result as it moves them back up into third in the table. They play London Rivals West Ham on Wednesday in their next Premier League game.

Wolves 1-1 Newcastle

Wolves and Newcastle faced off in a dramatic 1-1 draw. Wolves took the lead after a brilliant finish by Ruben Neves. Wolves then made it 2-0 but the goal was later ruled out after Pedro Neto had committed a foul during the build-up. Wolves’ Hwang Hee-Cahn then did one of the worst clearances I have ever seen to place the ball perfectly for Allan Saint-Maximan to level the game in the 90th minute. It was a hell of a finish from the Newcastle man, but he should never have been anywhere near the ball. Wolves will be frustrated as they needed to get a win on the board and to concede the way they did will really anger the fans. They sit 19th on just two points, and they travel to Bournemouth next. If they don’t beat the Cherries, I would be really concerned about just how much of a struggle this might be for Wolves and their fans. As for Newcastle, they will also be frustrated that they didn’t get the win here. They did score a late goal to stop them losing but they also hit the bar from 6 yards out and they really should have had a penalty in the first a half. A slight blip from the team who has been really impressive so far this season. They do still sit in 7th place, and they have arguably their toughest challenge yet as they play Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Chelsea 2-1 Leicester

Chelsea got themselves a really important victory as Raheem Sterling scored his first and second goals for the club. They weren’t helped by a stupid display from Connor Gallagher who managed to receive two yellow cards within 6 minutes of each other. Right after half time, Raheem Sterling got his first goal in a different shade of blue with a goal that I believe took a deflection of the Leicester defender which was unfortunate for them. His second goal was like a typical one he would score for City as he was there on the back post to tap the ball home after a brilliant cross from the wing, this time Reece James. Harvey Barnes got a goal back for Leicester and they nearly snatched an equalizer, but Ayoze Perez shot hit the crossbar and the ball came out. This was an important bounce back victory for Thomas Tuchel’s blues as they move up to 6th in the table and they play away to Southampton tomorrow in a game they should be winning. As for Leicester, there terrible start to the season continues as they now find themselves bottom of the Premier League with only 1 point to their name. They host Manchester United on Thursday in a game that they cannot afford to lose.

Brentford 1-1 Everton

17,000 fans watched as Brentford and Everton played out a 1 all draw. Anthony Gordon, who is very much speculated to join Chelsea by the end of the transfer window, put the Toffees in front with a calm finish. After the Bees hit the woodwork 3 times, they finally scored as Vitaly Janelt tapped the ball into the back of the net to level the game. Both teams will be a little bit frustrated with the result as both teams will feel that they maybe could have won the game. The draw means that Brentford sit 10th in the table whilst Everton are 18th. Both teams play tomorrow, with Brentford playing away to Crystal Palace in an exciting matchup whilst Everton travel to play Leeds.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

On the first game of the weekend, Manchester United gained a crucial 3 points away to Southampton. Bruno Fernandes continued his good run of form by scoring a calmly hit volley. At one point in the match, Manchester United had 5 shots and somehow, didn’t score with any of them. Centre Back Bella-Kotchap had a great chance in the first half and really should have scored. They also had a couple of really good chances in quick succession, but David De Gea denied them from levelling the contest. Southampton will be frustrated with the loss as they had some really good chances and had more shots than Manchester United over the 90 minutes. Southampton now sit 13th in the table which isn’t too bad, and they host Chelsea tomorrow. Manchester United however, will be really happy to get over the line with the victory and it means that they have moved all the way up to 8th place in the table. They face Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Thursday and a third victory for United would really help keep Manchester United’s confidence up.

Brighton 1-0 Leeds

In a battle between one of the best attacking teams in the league and one of the best defensive teams in the league, the defence won out as Brighton managed to get a 1-0 victory over Leeds at the AMEX. Both teams had a few really good chances, but no one was able to put the ball into the back of the net. One man who was able to score though was Pascal Gross as he placed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. Gross now has 3 goals in 4 Premier League games. This was an important victory for Brighton as the three points keeps them in 4th place, but they are only 2 points off the top of the table. They travel to London tomorrow to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage. Leeds will be disappointed to receive their first loss of the season but I’m pretty sure they would have taken 5th in the table after 4 games at the start of the season. Leeds host struggling Everton tomorrow in a game that they should be winning.

Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Pablo Fornals got West Ham both their first Premier League goal and points yesterday as they edged past Aston Villa with a 1-0 victory. Villa took the lead, but it didn’t count as the cross from the corner went out of play. Lucas Digne did some superb defended to deny Jarrod Bowen the opportunity to put the Hammers in front. This didn’t affect the London side too badly though as Pablo Fornals scored with a long-range effort that took a big deflection off Ezri Konsa. Villa are really struggling. They where unlucky to concede the way they did but that doesn’t affect how bad they are. They currently sit 15th with only one win, and they travel to Arsenal for a game that could potentially be very one sided. Even though there was a bit of luck involved, West Ham won’t care as they finally have points to their name in this seasons’ Premier League. They need to build on this result as they will want to be higher than 16th place but it might be quite difficult against a Tottenham Hotspur side in a good run of form.
