Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 38

Everton 1-0 Bournemouth

Everton picked up the biggest win of their season to secure their place in the Premier League for next season. Idrissa Gana Gueye had Everton’s first real chance of the game, but his effort was comfortably tipped over the bar by Mark Travers. Bournemouth then won the ball back from James Tarkowski, but Dominik Solanke spared the opportunity. In the second half, Demarai Gray had a golden opportunity to fire Everton in front, but his lack of power on the header meant Travers was able to save it. In the 57th minute, Everton got the goal they needed as Abdoulaye Doucoure smashed the ball into the back of the net to send Goodison Park into a frenzy. Bournemouth then came close to equalising through Kieffer Moore before Jordan Pickford pulled off a vital stop to deny Matias Vina. Overall, this was exactly what Everton needed. The Toffees end the season in 17th place and they will be hoping for a much stronger campaign next time round. As for Bournemouth, they’ll be slightly disappointed with how their season has ended. The Cherries end up 15th in the table and they can be proud of their achievement to stay in the Premier League.

Leicester 2-1 West Ham

Despite a really good win, Leicester City have been relegated to the Championship. Kelechi Iheanacho came super close to putting Leicester City in front and he’ll be disappointed that he didn’t find the back of the net. However, in the 34th minute, Leicester did take the lead through Harvey Barnes. Barnes made a brilliant solo run, played a nice 1-2 with Iheanacho before he slotted the ball into the back of the net to give the hosts some hope. In the second half, Said Benrahma nearly equalised for West Ham, but his curling effort could only hit the post. In the 62nd minute, Leicester doubled their lead as Wout Faes scored a header. Danny Ings then had a golden opportunity for West Ham which he terribly blasted over the bar, but Pablo Fornals finished well in the 79th minute to get West Ham back into the game. In the end, this was a good win for Leicester City, but it wasn’t enough for them to stay in the Premier League. The Foxes end the season in 18th place and they will be looking to get promoted straight back to the top flight next season. As for West Ham, they’ll be disappointed that they lost this game. The Hammers end the league campaign in 14th and they now set their sights on the UEFA Europa Conference League Final (VS Fiorentina).

Leeds 1-4 Tottenham

Neither Leeds nor Tottenham left Elland Road with what they were looking for. Leeds’ survival hopes took a huge hit after just 90 seconds when Harry Kane fired Tottenham in front. Kane and Son’s combination was superb. Robin Koch then missed a golden opportunity to level the game for Leeds United as his headed effort went wide of the target. Tottenham then started the second half as well as the first half as Pedro Porro finished really well to all but end Leeds’ hopes. Luke Ayling then missed a good opportunity to get Leeds back into it, but in the 67th minute, Jack Harrison took his opportunity to make it 2-1. However, it didn’t mean much as Harry Kane netted his second goal of the afternoon less than 2 minutes after Harrison’s goal. In the 95th minute, Leeds’ day got even worse as Lucas Moura scored a brilliant solo goal. In the end, Leeds United just weren’t good enough to stay in the Premier League. Leeds end the season in 19th place and they will need to rebuild the squad if they want to quickly return to the Prem. As for Tottenham, it was a good win for them, but it wasn’t enough for them to qualify for Europe. Spurs end the season 8th in the table and they cannot afford to have another season like this again.

Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

Aston Villa picked up a brilliant win to secure their place in Europe for next season. Leon Bailey smashed the crossbar for Aston Villa earlier on, but they were in front after just 8 minutes through a calm finish by Douglas Luiz. Deniz Undav thought he’d leveled the game up for Brighton in the 19th minute, but his effort was ruled out due to Julio Enciso being offside. After a brilliant bit of play by Jacob Ramsey, Ollie Watkins was able to tap the ball home to give Aston Villa a 2-goal cushion after 26 minutes. However, Brighton were able to get one back in the 38th minute through Deniz Undav. Undav’s control and finish was superb, but he got lucky that VAR exists. In the second half, Jacob Ramsey somehow missed an open goal from about 2 yards out, but it didn’t affect the end result. Overall, what a brilliant achievement for Aston Villa. Villa end the season in 7th place and they have to be one of the favourites to win the Europa Conference League next season with Unai Emery as manager. As for Brighton, they’ll be disappointed that they lost, but it’s still been a terrific season for them. The Seagulls finish 6th and they will look to build on from here next season.

Brentford 1-0 Manchester City

Brentford managed to pick up a great victory to end a terrific season. David Raya denied Cole Palmer early on before Ben Mee’s effort was saved by Ederson. In the second half, Brentford wanted a penalty after the ball hit the arm of Rico Lewis. There was nothing that Lewis could’ve done so this was the right call. In the 85th minute, Bryan Mbeumo headed the ball back into the danger area and Ethan Pinnock arrived to put the ball into the back of the Manchester City net to put Brentford in front. Cole Palmer then had 3 chances in the space of 10 seconds to equalise for Man City, but he couldn’t get any of his efforts past the Brentford defence. Overall, what a great way to end the season if you’re Brentford. The Bees end their campaign in 9th place and they will hope to continue their fine upward trajectory next season. As for Manchester City, their 25-game unbeaten run has finally come to an end. City end the season as Champions and they now face two massive finals if they want to complete a famous treble.

Arsenal 5-0 Wolves

Arsenal ended the season in a positive way as they thrashed Wolves at the Emirates. Granit Xhaka headed Arsenal in front after 11 minutes after a nice cross by Gabriel Jesus before Xhaka scored again just 3 minutes later. The defending by Wolves on the second goal was terrible. It was then 3-0 to Arsenal after 27 minutes as Bukayo Saka scored a nice goal. Xhaka then had a brilliant chance to get himself a hat trick, but he scuffed his effort wide. In the second half, Thomas Partey thought he’d got Arsenal’s 4th of the game, but his effort was ruled out for a foul on Jose Sa. Correct decision. However, it didn’t take the hosts too long to make it 4-0 as Gabriel Jesus headed home to finish off a really positive first season at the Emirates for the Brazilian. Arsenal weren’t done there though as Jakub Kiwior scored his first-ever goal for Arsenal after a terrible bit of goalkeeping by Jose Sa. Overall, this was a really good last game of the season if you’re Arsenal. The Gunners end up 2nd in the table and they will look to build from a fantastic campaign next season. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, this was yet another terrible away day for them this season. Wolves finish 13th and they have to improve next season.

Southampton 4-4 Liverpool

The typical high-scoring last game of the season came at St. Mary’s as Southampton fans watched their team in the Premier League for the last time (for now). An absolutely horrendous error by Romeo Lavia allowed Diogo Jota to slot the ball into the empty net to give Liverpool the lead after 10 minutes. Roberto Firmino then scored on his final-ever Liverpool appearance (after some more questionable defending) before James Ward-Prowse got one back for Southampton in the 19th minute. In the 28th minute, it was 2-2 as Kamaldeen Sulemana scored his first goal in a Southampton shirt. 2 minutes into the second half and Southampton were winning due to Sulemana scoring again! This was a terrific goal. In the 64th minute, Jordan Henderson gave the ball away cheaply and it resulted in Adam Armstrong putting Southampton 2 in front. However, Cody Gakpo got one back for Liverpool in the 72nd minute before Diogo Jota smashed the ball in just a minute later to make it 4-4. Gakpo’s goal was particularly well-worked. In the end, this was an entertaining way for Southampton to bow out of the Premier League! The Saints end the season bottom of the table and they will hope for a much better year in the Championship. As for Liverpool, this game sort of summed up their season. The Reds end up in 5th and they have to be doing much better next year.

Manchester United 2-1 Fulham

Manchester United made sure that they’re heading into Wembley with momentum on their side. Fulham were the ones who took the lead as Kenny Tete headed home from a Willian corner. Fulham then had the opportunity to double their lead after Casemiro fouled Tom Cairney. However, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty was saved by David De Gea so the game remained 1-0. Manchester United were then able to level the game up in the 39th minute as the ball luckily fell into the path of Jadon Sancho who tapped home from close range. Marcus Rashford missed a golden opportunity early in the second half, but United did find themselves in front after 55 minutes through Bruno Fernandes. Fred’s pass was brilliant. In the 90th minute, Wout Weghorst missed a sitter to extend United’s lead. Overall, this was a good way for Manchester United to end their season. United finish third and they play rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup Final on Saturday. As for Fulham, they’ll be disappointed that they didn’t get something from this game. The Cottagers end their campaign in 10th place and it’s fair to say they’ve had a brilliant season.

Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

Anthony Gordon managed to put Newcastle in front after just 9 minutes after some terrible defending by Chelsea. Chelsea were able to get on level terms in the 27th minute after a Kieran Trippier own goal. The defending by Newcastle United wasn’t much better. Raheem Sterling went on to have a couple of good chances, but he wasn’t able to find the back of the net with either attempt. 17-year-old Lewis Miley came close to scoring for Newcastle, but his effort hit the top of the bar. In the end, this game was never going to change Chelsea’s season. The Blues end up in a dismal 12th place and it can’t get much worse for them next season. As for Newcastle, they’ll be disappointed that they weren’t able to finish third. The Magpies end up in 4th, but that shouldn’t take away from a superb season.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace somehow weren’t able to take the lead in the first half as they missed multiple good chances. Nottingham Forest punished them for this as Taiwo Awoniyi scored for the 4th consecutive game. Awoniyi’s finish was really good, but the goalkeeping by Sam Johnstone was not. In the 66th minute, Crystal Palace were level through Will Hughes. Hughes’ headed flick-on took a slight deflection off Willy Boly which took the ball away from Wayne Hennessey. In the end, I think Crystal Palace will be frustrated that they weren’t able to end their season on a victory. The Eagles finish 11th in the table and they will hope to finish inside the top half of the table this time next year. As for Nottingham Forest, this was a good way to end their season. Forest finish in 16th and they can be delighted with themselves for staying up.

Note: Thankyou to everyone who has read my Premier League Roundup’s this season. However, this isn’t the last one so stay tuned!
