Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 37

Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea

It was all smiles for Manchester City as they lifted the Premier League trophy for the third consecutive season! After a terrible pass by Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer slotted in Julian Alvarez who scored to put Manchester City in front after 12 minutes. Raheem Sterling then found himself in on goal, but his shot was too weak to score against his old club. Connor Gallagher then came super close to equalising for Chelsea, but his headed effort came back out off the post. Early in the second half, Kalvin Phillips nearly scored his first goal for Man City, but his header hit the post and came out. Julian Alvarez then thought he’d got his second goal of the afternoon, but his goal was rightly ruled out for a Riyad Mahrez handball. I really don’t know what Mahrez was thinking. Overall, it’s another win for Manchester City as they were able to once again get their hands on Premier League silverware. City are now 7 points clear at the top of the table and they play away to both Brighton and Brentford in the final week of their league season. As for Chelsea, they need the season to end now. Chelsea drop to 12th in the table and they play away to Manchester United on Thursday before they host Newcastle on the final day of the season.

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal

Nottingham Forest picked up a massive 3 points to secure their stay in the Premier League for another season as Arsenal’s title dreams officially ended. After a poor pass by Martin Odegaard, Taiwo Awoniyi finished off the Nottingham Forest move to put them 1-0 up after 19 minutes. In the second half, a defensive error by Arsenal allowed Morgan Gibbs-White in on goal, but he poorly guided his effort into the side netting. Overall, this was a brilliant victory for Nottingham Forest as they secure their Premier League safety. Forest remain 16th in the table and they play away to Crystal Palace on the final day of the season. As for Arsenal, they have completely run out of steam and this match proved it. The Gunners are now 7 points off league leaders Manchester City and they host Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final game of the season.

Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

Newcastle secured their spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League as Leicester City are on the brink of relegation. Bruno Guimaraes received a yellow card after 8 minutes for an awful tackle on Boubakary Soumare. Personally, I have absolutely no idea how this wasn’t a red card. Terrible goalkeeping from Daniel Iversen allowed Callum Wilson to hit the post before Wilfred Ndidi cleared the rebound off the line. Miguel Almiron then hit the post for Newcastle before Alexander Isak missed a good opportunity to fire the hosts in front on the rebound. In the second half, Newcastle hit the post again as Bruno Guimaraes missed an absolute sitter from about 2 yards out. In the 93rd minute, Leicester’s first chance of the game fell to Timothy Castagne who saw his effort get saved well by Nick Pope. In the end, Newcastle won’t be too happy with the result of this game, but they’ll be delighted that they’re going to be playing Champions League football next season. The Magpies remain third in the table and they play away to Chelsea in their last game of the season. As for Leicester City, this is actually a decent point for them. However, the Foxes are still inside the relegation zone (18th) and they host West Ham United on the final day of the season knowing they have to win if they want any chance of staying up.

Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa

Neither Liverpool nor Aston Villa left Anfield particularly happy with just a point. Aston Villa were awarded a penalty after 20 as Ibrahima Konate brought down Ollie Watkins in the box. Watkins stepped up and terribly put the ball wide of the post. However, Aston Villa were in front just 5 minutes later through Jacob Ramsey. Douglas Luiz’s cross was superb. Alisson then pulled out a good stop to deny Jacob Ramsey a second goal. Tyrone Mings caught Cody Gakpo at the end of the first half and the Liverpool players were asking for a red card. Mings was given a yellow and I think that was the right call. In the 55th minute, Cody Gakpo scored to make it 1-1 for Liverpool, but his goal was then ruled out for offside. I’m not sure about this one. And then, in the 89th minute, Roberto Firmino scored in his last game at Anfield (as a Liverpool player) to rescue a point for the hosts. In the end, it’s a point that just about keeps Liverpool in with a shout of Champions League football next season. The Reds remain 5th and they play away to Southampton in their final game of the season. As for Aston Villa, they’ll be gutted that they weren’t able to hold on for all 3 points. Villa have moved up to 7th however and they host Brighton in a “European decider” on the last day of the season.

Wolves 1-1 Everton

Everton equalised in the 99th minute to pick up a huge point in their relegation scrap. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a couple of decent opportunities for Everton in the first half, but he failed to take any of them before Yerry Mina missed an absolute sitter. After a brilliant solo run by Adama Traore, Hwang Hee-Chan scored on the rebound to put Wolverhampton Wanderers in front after 34 minutes. Nelson Semedo had a decent chance for Wolves in the second half, but he wasn’t able to guide his effort on target. And then, in the 99th minute, Yerry Mina finished off after some poor goalkeeping by Daniel Bentley to rescue a massive point for Everton. In the end, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be mightily disappointed with themselves for not seeing out the win. Wolves stay 13th and they play away to Arsenal on the final day of the season. As for Everton, this point could well be the difference between Premier League and Championship football next season. The Toffees remain in 17th place and they host Bournemouth in their last game of the season.

West Ham 3-1 Leeds

Leeds United’s survival hopes took a big hit against West Ham United. Leeds took the lead after 17 minutes through a brilliant volley by Rodrigo. However, West Ham got back onto level terms in the 31st minute through Declan Rice. Rice’s finish was really smart. In the 72nd minute, after a really nice move by West Ham, Jarrod Bowen finished off to put the hosts in front. Crysencio Summerville then had a great chance for Leeds, but his lack of conviction and good defending by Emerson meant Leeds couldn’t find the back of the net. West Ham could though as Manuel Lanzini scored in the 94th minute to seal the victory for the Hammers. Overall, it’s a good win for West Ham United as they move up to 14th in the table. The Hammers play away to Leicester City in a big game on the last day of the season. As for Leeds United, they really needed to get a result from this game. Leeds have dropped down to 19th place and they know they have to beat Tottenham on Sunday if they want any chance of remaining in the Premier League for next season.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United

Manchester United picked up a win that puts them on the brink of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Man United took the lead after just 9 minutes through a brilliant finish by Casemiro. David De Gea then pulled off a couple of decent stops to keep the game at 1-0 before Neto denied Wout Weghorst. Bournemouth’s best chance of the game then fell to Kieffer Moore, but he was denied by a good stop from De Gea. In the end, Bournemouth will be slightly disappointed that they weren’t able to get something from this game. The Cherries have dropped down to 15th place and they play away to Everton in a big game on Sunday. As for Manchester United, 1 more point in their last 2 games secures them a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. United host both Chelsea and Fulham to end their league campaign.

Tottenham 1-3 Brentford

Brentford picked up another brilliant win as Tottenham fall outside of the European places. Tottenham found themselves in front after 8 minutes through a brilliant strike by Harry Kane. Rico Henry then did brilliantly well to head Emerson Royal’s effort off the line before Brentford were level 5 minutes into the second half through Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo's finish was really good. 12 minutes later and Brentford were in front through another good finish by Bryan Mbeumo. Told you he was underrated! In the 88th minute, Oliver Skipp gave the ball away and it resulted in Yoane Wissa finishing Tottenham Hotspur off. Richarlison then had two quick back-to-back efforts, but he was denied brilliantly both times by David Raya. In the end, it’s yet another loss for Tottenham as they now find themselves outside of the European places. Spurs have dropped down to 8th in the table and they play away to Leeds in a huge game for both clubs on the final day of the season. As for Brentford, this was a great win for them and it keeps their European dreams alive. The Bees remain 9th and they host Manchester City in their final game of the season.

Brighton 3-1 Southampton

Brighton picked up the win that secured them a spot in Europe for the first time in their history. Carlos Alcaraz had a good opportunity for Southampton early on, but his effort went well wide of the goal. After a terrible pass by Alex McCarthy, Kaoru Mitoma could only lob his effort onto the post. However, Brighton were able to take the lead in the 29th minute through Evan Ferguson. Alex McCarthy probably should’ve kept this out. Evan Ferguson then got his second goal of the afternoon in the 40th minute after a brilliant bit of play from Mitoma. In the second half, Southampton got one back through Mohamed Elyounoussi and they thought they’d leveled the game up just 5 minutes later as Theo Walcott put the ball into the back of the Brighton net. However, it was ruled out for offside and I think this was a bad decision. In the 69th, Brighton and Hove Albion’s 2-goal lead was restored as Pascal Gross found the bottom corner. Overall, this was another positive result for Brighton as they stay 6th. The Seagull host Manchester City tomorrow before they play away to Aston Villa in their final game of the season. As for Southampton, they have only 1 game left now before they return to the Championship. The Saints stay bottom of the Premier League and they host Liverpool on the last day of the season.

Fulham 2-2 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace found themselves ahead at Craven Cottage after 34 minutes through Odsonne Edouard. Eberechi Eze did brilliantly to start a counter-attack and Edouard finished off well to put the visitors in front. In additional time at the end of the first half, Fulham were awarded a penalty after Harry Wilson was fouled by Tyrick Mitchell. Aleksandar Mitrovic stepped up and scored to send the game into the break at 1-1. Early in the second half, Mitrovic missed a great opportunity to put Fulham in front, but he wouldn’t miss again as he headed home superbly to put Fulham in front after 61 minutes. However, in the 83rd, Joel Ward was able to bundle the ball over the line to equalise for Palace. In the end, Fulham will be slightly disappointed to come away from this game without the victory. The Cottagers remain 10th and they play away to Manchester United on the final day of the season. As for Crystal Palace, this was a decent result for them as they move up to 11th in the table (not as long a gap as last time). The Eagles host Nottingham Forest in their final game of the season.
