Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 34

Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham

Liverpool moved above Tottenham Hotspur with a crucial late goal. Liverpool were ahead inside 3 minutes through Curtis Jones before Luis Diaz made it 2-0 to Liverpool after just 5 minutes. Fraser Forster probably should’ve saved the first goal. 10 minutes later, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Cristian Romero fouled Cody Gakpo. Mohamed Salah stepped up and this time he did score to put Liverpool three in front after just 15 minutes. In the 40th minute, Tottenham were able to get one back through Harry Kane after Virgil Van Dijk slipped. In the second half, Heung-Min Son was very unlucky as his effort struck the post and came out and later on, Cristian Romero also hit the post for the visitors. However, in the 77th minute, Tottenham were right back in it as Son got his goal to give Spurs some hope. In the 93rd minute, Richarlison got the faintest of touches on the ball to guide it past Alisson and into the back of the Liverpool net meaning the game was now all square at 3-3. And then, just a minute later, Lucas Moura played a terrible back pass which resulted in Diogo Jota scoring the winning goal for Liverpool. In the end, I don’t really know what to say regarding Liverpool’s performance in this game. What I do know is the Reds have moved up to 5th in the table and they host Fulham in their next game. As for Tottenham, they are a real mess at the moment. Spurs have dropped to 6th and they host Crystal Palace next time out.

Crystal Palace 4-3 West Ham

Crystal Palace picked up a great win in an enthralling 7-goal encounter against West Ham United. Tomas Soucek fired West Ham in front after 9 minutes after some terrible decision-making by Michael Olise. In the 15th minute, it was all square again as Jordan Ayew scored before Wilfried Zaha got his goal just 5 minutes later to put Palace in front. In the 30th minute, Tomas Soucek criminally lost the ball to Jeffrey Schlupp who went on to score and give Crystal Palace a 2-goal cushion. 5 minutes later and it was 3-2 as it was now Michail Antonio’s turn to score from a corner kick routine. Midway through the second half, Crystal Palace were awarded a penalty which Eberechi Eze stepped up and scored to restore the hosts' two-goal advantage. West Ham did get one back in the 72nd minute through Naif Aguerd as the visitors scored another goal from a corner. Palace really need to sort that out. Overall, it’s another good day for Crystal Palace as they finally end a Gameweek not in 12th place (first time since Gameweek 17)! The Eagles move up to 11th and they play away to Tottenham next time out. As for West Ham, a loss here means they aren’t fully safe from relegation yet. The Hammers stay 15th and they play away to Manchester City tonight.

Brighton 6-0 Wolves

Brighton hit Wolves for 6 to build some confidence back up. Brighton were ahead inside 6 minutes through a simple tap-in by Deniz Undav before it was then 2-0 to Brighton after 13 minutes as Pascal Gross got on the act after a poor mistake by Matheus Nunes. Jose Sa then got very lucky as Danny Welbeck didn’t take the opportunity that was handed to him, but that didn’t stop Pascal Gross from scoring a beautiful goal to make it 3-0 after 26 minutes. It was then Pedro Neto’s turn to give the ball away which resulted in Brighton going on to score through Danny Welbeck. 3 minutes into the second half and Danny Welbeck had his second goal of the game after some more terrible play from Wolverhampton Wanderers before Deniz Undav scored in the 66th minute to make it Brighton and Hove Albion 6, Wolverhampton Wanderers 0. Overall, it doesn’t get much better than this for Brighton. The Seagulls stay 8th and they host Manchester United in a huge game next time out. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, this was absolutely disgraceful and every single player involved should be fined at least 2-weeks wages! Wolves drop to 14th in the table and they host Aston Villa in a local derby next time out.

Bournemouth 4-1 Leeds

Bournemouth move a step closer to staying in the Premier League for another season whilst Leeds United continue to struggle. Bournemouth were ahead inside 20 minutes through a brilliantly placed effort by Jefferson Lerma. 4 minutes later, Bournemouth were 2-0 up as Jefferson Lerma scored again after some terrible goalkeeping by Illan Meslier. Meslier’s been doing this a lot recently and if he continues, he’s going to be one of the main reasons as to why Leeds United get relegated. Leeds were able to get one back in the 32nd minute through Patrick Bamford. Wilfried Gnonto put in a perfect cross which saw Bamford head home from close range to get Leeds back into the game. In the second half, a great chance fell to Gnonto, but he poorly headed the ball wide of the goal. In the 63rd minute, Bournemouth restored their two-goal lead as Dominic Solanke finished well. Neto then did brilliantly for the hosts as he pulled off two good saves in quick succession. In the 91st minute, more poor goalkeeping from Meslier resulted in Antoine Semenyo’s effort going into the back of the net to make it 4-1 to Bournemouth. Overall, this was a terrific result for Bournemouth as they all but ensure their Premier League safety. The Cherries have moved up into 13th place and they host Chelsea next time out knowing a win would take them above their opponents. As for Leeds United, they are a real mess right now! Leeds have dropped to 17th in the table and their next game is away to Manchester City.

Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea

Arsenal finally got back to winning ways against an ailing Chelsea. Arsenal took the lead after 18 minutes through Martin Odegaard. Odegaard’s effort smashed off the bar and went in excellently. Ben Chilwell then had a decent chance for Chelsea, but he was denied well by Aaron Ramsdale. In the 31st minute, it was 2-0 to Arsenal as Granit Xhaka once again set up Martin Odegaard who scored to put the hosts in control. If they were in control after 31 minutes, they were out of sight after 34 as Gabriel Jesus scored after some questionable defending by Chelsea. In the second half, Arsenal had chances to extend their lead which they didn’t take before Noni Madueke scored in the 65th minute to give Chelsea a glimmer of hope. Overall, it’s a good win for Arsenal as they remain top of the Premier League. The Gunners’ next game is absolutely huge for them as they play away to Newcastle. As for Chelsea, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “Big 6 Club” be this bad before. The Blues drop to 12th in the table and they play away to Bournemouth next time out.

Newcastle 3-1 Southampton

Newcastle close in on Champions League qualification as Southampton close in on relegation to the Championship. Anthony Gordon was in on goal early on for Newcastle, but he could only manage to guide his effort onto the post. In the 41st minute, Southampton executed a counterattack to perfection as Stuart Armstrong scored to shockingly put Southampton in front. In the second half, Fabian Schar had a golden opportunity, but he was only able to hit the ball straight at the keeper. However, in the 54th minute, Newcastle were level as Callum Wilson scored after a brilliant pass from Alexander Isak. Callum Wilson then thought he’d completely turned the game around for his side when he scored in the 74th minute, but VAR ruled his goal out for offside against the forward. This was the correct call. In the 79th minute, Newcastle were ahead through an own goal by Theo Walcott. There was literally nothing that Walcott could’ve done here. Callum Wilson then got his second goal of the game just a couple of minutes later to see the victory for the hosts. Wilson also nearly scored a hattrick, but his effort hit the crossbar twice! In the end, Newcastle can be happy with the victory as they close in on Champions League football. The Magpies stay third and they host Arsenal in a huge game next time out. As for Southampton, it’s almost all over for them after this loss. The Saints stay bottom of the table, six points off safety and they play away to Nottingham Forest in a critical game next Monday.

Leicester 2-2 Everton

Neither Leicester nor Everton were able to pick up the crucial win that they were both looking for. Daniel Iversen pulled out a brilliant save to stop Alex Iwobi from putting Everton in front before they were awarded a penalty after Timothy Castagne fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin. DCL stepped up and scored to give Everton the lead after 15 minutes. 7 minutes later and it was 1-1 as Caglar Soyuncu scored. I do have to question the goalkeeping by Jordan Pickford as I feel he could have kept Soyuncu’s effort out. In the 33rd minute, Jamie Vardy was cool, calm and collected as he went round Pickford and scored to put Leicester City in front. Calvert-Lewin then missed an absolute sitter from just a few yards out before Leicester counter-attacked and Jamie Vardy hit the crossbar. Leicester were then awarded a penalty in additional time at the end of the first half after Harvey Barnes’ cross hit the arm of Michael Keane. James Maddison stepped up and saw his effort saved by Pickford who stayed down the middle. Maddison’s penalty was awful and it happened to come in the 9th minute of additional time! Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Alex Iwobi equalised for the visitors with a really nice finish. In the end, it’s disappointment for Leicester even though they've moved out of the relegation zone. The Foxes now find themselves in 16th place and they play away to Fulham next time out. As for Everton, it’s a draw for them that keeps them in the bottom 3. The Toffees remain 19th and their next game is away to Brighton.

Fulham 1-2 Manchester City

Erling Haaland scored his 50th goal of the season as Manchester City continue to put pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League title race. Tim Ream fouled Julian Alvarez inside the penalty after just a couple of minutes and this resulted in Erling Haaland stepping up and scoring from the spot to score his 50th goal of the season and to put Manchester City ahead after just 3 minutes. Fulham were then level in the 15th minute though as Vinicius finished well to stun the visitors. Jack Grealish then had a really good opportunity, but his effort was tipped onto the bar by Bernd Leno. In the 36th minute, Julian Alvarez scored a cracking goal to put Man City back in front. It was a terrific finish by Alvarez, but I do think Leno’s positioning wasn’t great. In the second half, Erling Haaland came close to getting his second goal of the game, but Bernd Leno pulled off a good stop to push the ball wide for a corner. Overall, it wasn’t a good or a bad day for Fulham really. The Cottagers stay 10th and they play away to Liverpool tonight. As for Manchester City, it’s another win for them as they keep piling the pressure onto Arsenal. City remain in second and they host West Ham United in their next game (also tonight).

Brentford 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest were dealt a big blow as Brentford scored late to turn the game around. Notts Forest took the lead right at the end of the first half as the ball fell perfectly to Danilo and he finished well to send Forest into the break in front. In the 82nd minute, Brentford were level as Ivan Toney scored directly from a freekick. Forest will be kicking themselves for conceding the way they did. Brentford nearly then took the lead as Frank Onyeka’s effort took a big deflection off of his own teammate, but Keylor Navas was able to pull off a brilliant save. However, in the 94th minute, Navas couldn’t keep Josh Dasilva’s effort out as Brentford snatched all 3 points at the death. Again, Navas and Forest will be frustrated with themselves as Dasilva’s effort should never have gone in. In the end, it’s a victory for Brentford that sees them stay with an outside chance of making Europe. The Bees remain 9th in the table and they go to Liverpool next time out. As for Nottingham Forest, what a gutting loss for them! Forest drop back down into the relegation zone (18th) and they host Southampton in a must-win game on Monday.

Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa

Marcus Rashford had a good chance for Manchester United in the first half, but Emiliano Martinez did well to deny United’s star man. Casemiro then came close to scoring, but his effort could only hit the crossbar. In the 39th minute, Manchester United were ahead through Bruno Fernandes. The blame is 100% on Emi Martinez for this goal as he made a couple of errors which allowed Fernandes to put Man U in front. In the second half, Douglas Luiz had a couple of good chances, but he just couldn’t find the back of the net. Partly because of his lack of conviction, but also partly down to brilliant defending by Victor Lindelöf. In the end, it’s a good win for Manchester United as they remain 4th. United’s next game is away to Brighton tomorrow. As for Aston Villa, their really impressive unbeaten run has now come to an end. Villa stay 7th and they play away to rivals Wolves next time out.
