Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 32

Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham

Newcastle smashes Tottenham for 6 in another mental Premier League result. After some poor defending from Tottenham, Hugo Lloris parried Joelinton’s shot right in front of Jacob Murphy who scored to give Newcastle the lead inside 2 minutes. Joelinton then made it 2-0 in the 6th minute after some calm play from the Newcastle man before Jacob Murphy got his second goal to put Newcastle United 3-0 up against Spurs after just 9 minutes. The strike from Murphy was great, but I have no idea why Lloris just stood still. After a brilliant pass from Joe Willock, Alexander Isak made it 4-0 in the 19th minute before the Swedish international scored again just two minutes later! Harry Kane was able to get one back for Tottenham early in the second half before Callum Wilson scored in the 67th minute after only being on the pitch for about a minute. Overall, this has got to be Newcastle’s game of the season. The Magpies move back up to third and they play away to Everton next time out. As for Tottenham, they’re an absolute mess right now! Spurs stay 5th and they host Manchester United on Thursday in a game they have to win if they want to have any shot of playing Champions League football next season.

Arsenal 3-3 Southampton

Arsenal and Southampton played out a 6-goal thriller where neither team would’ve been too happy with the end result. After Aaron Ramsdale played a terrible pass to Carlos Alcaraz, Alcaraz scored to give Southampton the lead inside 60 seconds! Alcaraz then played a brilliant through ball to Theo Walcott who scored against his old club to give the Saints a 2-goal cushion after just 14 minutes. However, Arsenal got one back just 6 minutes later through Gabriel Martinelli before Ramsdale pulled off a double save to keep the game at 2-1. Arsenal then nearly leveled the game, but Carlos Alcaraz cleared the ball off the line. What a first-half performance from the Argentinian! In the 66th minute, Duje Caleta-Car made it 3-1 to Southampton after he headed home from close range. However, Arsenal weren’t out of the game yet as Martin Odegaard got one back for the Gunners in the 88th minute with a really nice finish before in the 90th minute, Bukayo Saka scored to rescue Arsenal a point. Leandro Trossard then nearly won the game for the hosts, but his effort struck the bar and went over. In the end, it’s another draw for Arsenal as they now lead Manchester City at the top of the table by 4 points. The Gunners play their biggest game of the season on Wednesday when they face City at the Etihad. As for Southampton, they’ll be gutted that they weren’t quite able to hold onto what would’ve been a crucial 3 points. The Saints stay bottom of the Premier League and they host Bournemouth next time out in a huge game for both clubs.

Liverpool 3-2 Nottingham Forest

Liverpool picked up an important victory as Nottingham Forest lose yet again. Liverpool created a few good chances in the first half which they weren’t able to take and Diogo Jota’s miss was particularly bad. However, at the start of the second half, Jota headed home to give Liverpool the lead. Just 4 minutes later, Notts Forest were level after Nico Williams’ effort deflected off of Andy Robertson. Another 4 minutes later and it was now 2-1 to Liverpool as Diogo Jota got his second goal of the afternoon. I have to say, the defending from Forest at this set piece was absolutely woeful. In the 67th minute, it was 2-2 as Morgan Gibbs-White scored (his effort took two deflections). However, in the 70th minute, Liverpool were back in front through Mohamed Salah. Unbelievably, this was the third goal that Nottingham Forest conceded from a set piece in this game! Brennan Johnson then had a brilliant chance to level the game up once again, but he could only hit the crossbar. In the end, it’s a decent day for Liverpool as they move back into the European places (7th). The Reds go to West Ham on Wednesday. As for Nottingham Forest, they’ll be annoyed with themselves because they could easily have got something from this game. Forest drop down to 19th in the table and they host Brighton next time out.

Bournemouth 0-4 West Ham

West Ham continued their terrific week as they thrash Bournemouth away from home. West Ham took the lead after 5 minutes as Michail Antonio headed home from close range. Bournemouth made this way too easy for their opponents. Lucas Paqueta then made it two-nil after just 12 minutes after some poor defending by the hosts. In the 43rd minute, Declan Rice made it 3-0 to West Ham as they scored from another corner. In the 72nd minute, Bournemouth gave the ball away once again and it resulted in Pablo Fornals scoring with a really weird finish. Kieffer Moor had a good chance for Bournemouth late on, but he guided his effort wide. Overall, this was a terrible performance from Bournemouth as they drop to 15th in the table. The Cherries go to Southampton on Thursday. As for West Ham, this has to be their best week of the season surely? The Hammers move up into 13th place and they welcome Liverpool to the London Stadium next time out.

Leicester 2-1 Wolves

Leicester picked up a huge victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers to move outside of the relegation zone. It only took Leicester City 13 minutes to make a mistake as Youri Tielemans was poorly dispossessed by Mario Lemina before Matheus Cunha scored to make it 1-0. Leicester were then awarded a penalty after Jose Sa tripped Jamie Vardy. I actually think Sa didn’t mean to make contact, but he really shouldn’t have been out there in the first place. Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up and scored to level the game up at 1-1 after 37 minutes. Jose Sa then made another mistake, but he recovered to deny Patson Daka well. In the second half, Leicester really should’ve taken the lead, but Daka’s effort was too tame and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall blasted the ball over the bar. However, Timothy Castagne scored in the 75th minute to put the Foxes in front. Overall, this was a great result for Leicester as they move up to 17th in the table. The Foxes play away to Leeds tomorrow. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, they’ll be really disappointed to lose this game. Wolves drop to 14th and they welcome Crystal Palace to the Molineux tomorrow.

Fulham 2-1 Leeds

After a nothing first half, Illan Meslier could only tip the ball out as far as Harry Wilson who smashed the ball in from close range to give Fulham the lead after 58 minutes. Andreas Pereira then smashed the bar from his freekick attempt before in the 72nd minute, Meslier made another mistake which allowed Pereira to simply tap the ball home and put his side two in front. Leeds did get one back in the 79th minute after the ball managed to pinball itself into the Fulham net (it was given as a Joao Palhinha own goal) before Willian’s freekick effort was pushed onto the bar by Meslier. Overall, it’s a decent win for Fulham as they move up into 9th. The Cottagers play away to Aston Villa in their next game. As for Leeds United, they’re really struggling at the moment. Leeds stay 16th in the table and they play Leicester in a ginormous game next time out.

Brentford 1-1 Aston Villa

Neither Brentford nor Aston Villa will be too happy with only a point from this game. Ivan Toney had a decent chance in the first half, but his shot was saved well by Emiliano Martinez. In the second half, Kevin Schade had two great back-to-back chances to score, but his effort was really poor both times. In the 65th minute, Brentford were in front through Ivan Toney. Ashley Young should’ve done better at the back post. Jacob Ramsey then had a good chance to equalise for Aston Villa, but he poorly lobbed the ball over the bar. However, in the 87th minute, Aston Villa did have their equaliser through Douglas Luiz after a poor mistake by Ben Mee. In the end, Brentford will be really frustrated with themselves for not seeing the game out. The Bees drop down to 10th and they play away to Chelsea in an important game for both sides on Wednesday. As for Aston Villa, their winning run comes to an end as they remain 6th. Villa host Fulham next time out.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Roy Hodgson’s 100% record comes to an end as Everton drop into the relegation zone. After a couple of half chances (at best) for Crystal Palace, Alex Iwobi struck a beautiful volley that was saved really well by Sam Johnstone. In the 57th minute, Crystal Palace thought they’d taken the lead after Eberechi Eze lobbed Jordan Pickford, but the goal was ruled out as Eze was offside. Correct decision. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then had a good chance for Everton, but he could only guide his shot wide of the target. In the 80th minute, Everton were down to 10 men as Mason Holgate was shown a second yellow card, but Palace weren’t able to take advantage of it so the game finished nil-nil. In the end, it’s a frustrating day for Crystal Palace as they stay 12th. The Eagles play away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next fixture. As for Everton, it’s a decent point, but it doesn’t change the fact that they’ve dropped down into the relegation zone (18th). The Toffees’ next game is at home to Newcastle.
