Leeds 1-5 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace put 5 past Leeds United in an incredible performance. Leeds took the lead after 21 minutes through a brilliant header by Patrick Bamford. Jeffrey Schlupp then had a golden chance to equalise, but he could only guide his headed effort off the post. However, Crystal Palace were able to get level just before halftime as Marc Guehi poked the ball home to score his first goal of the season. Palace were then able to get themselves in front in the 53rd minute through a guided header by Jordan Ayew. It was then 3-1 to the visitors just two minutes later as Eberechi Eze got himself on the scoresheet after a great bit of play by Michael Olise. I have to say, this was a really nice goal. In the 69th minute, it was 4-1 as Odsonne Edouard scored with a great finish. Jordan Ayew then decided to make it 5-1 to the Eagles in the 77th minute. Overall, this was a dark day for Leeds United. Leeds drop down to 16th place and their next game is at home to Liverpool on next week’s Monday Night Football. As for Crystal Palace, this was definitely their best performance for some time. The Eagles stay 12th in the table and they go to Southampton next time out.
Southampton 1-4 Manchester City
Manchester City looked comfortable as they cruised to an 8th successive victory. After a pretty quiet first half, Erling Haaland missed a pretty good opportunity when he headed the ball wide of the goal. However, he wasn’t going to miss again as he headed the ball home after a Kevin De Bruyne cross to give Manchester City the lead just before the break. In the second half, Gavin Bazunu denied Jack Grealish’s left-footed effort before City’s number 10 finished off with his right foot on the rebound. Jack Grealish then got an assist of his own as Erling Haaland scored a bicycle kick to give City an even bigger lead. However, Southampton were able to give their fans something to celebrate as Sekou Mara scored after a brilliant solo run by Moussa Djenepo. It’s worth mentioning that they’d only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes. City then immediately struck back as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on De Bruyne. Julian Alvarez, who’d just come on for Erling Haaland, stepped up and scored to restore City’s 3-goal lead. In the end, it’s another tough day for Southampton in the 2022/23 season. The Saints stay bottom of the Premier League and they host Crystal Palace next time out. As for Manchester City, this was another good win for them as they move within six points of league leaders Arsenal (with a game in hand). City host Bayern Munich in the Champions League tomorrow before they welcome Leicester City to the Etihad on Saturday.
Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
Liverpool overcame a two-goal deficit to halt Arsenal’s title charge. Arsenal came out the blocks firing as Gabriel Martinelli put the visitors in front after just 8 minutes. It has to be said that the defending from Liverpool wasn’t great. In the 28th minute, Arsenal made it 2-0 as Gabriel Jesus headed home from close range. Even though the cross by Martinelli and the header from Jesus was quality, the defending from Liverpool was absolutely woeful. However, Liverpool were able to get one back in the 42nd minute through Mohamed Salah. It wasn’t the cleanest of goals, but it’s exactly what the hosts needed. In the second half, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Rob Holding clipped Diogo Jota inside the box. Mo Salah stepped up and shockingly put the ball wide. This was a terrible penalty by Liverpool’s main man. And then, in the 87th minute, Roberto Firmino got on the act to level the game up at 2-2. Salah then nearly put Liverpool in front, but he was brilliantly denied by Aaron Ramsdale. Ibrahima Konate then had an even better chance, but Liverpool were once again denied by Ramsdale. Don’t get me wrong, Arsenal’s number 1 did brilliantly, but I have no idea how Konate failed to find the back of the net. In the end, this was a solid point for Liverpool, but they also could’ve taken all 3. The Reds stay 8th in the table and their next game is away to Leeds United. As for Arsenal, we probably won’t know if this was a good result for them until the end of the season. The Gunners are now just 6 points clear at the top of the Premier League and they play away to West Ham next time out.
Tottenham 2-1 Brighton
Tottenham picked up a key victory over Brighton after some shocking refereeing decisions. Tottenham took the lead after 10 minutes through a brilliant strike by Heung-Min Son. Not a bad way to get your 100th Premier League goal! Kaoru Mitoma then thought he’d leveled the game for Brighton, but his goal was ruled out by VAR after it was deemed that Mitoma had handled the ball. The ball hit his shoulder, not his arm! Moises Caicedo then came super close for Brighton as his effort struck the post and came out. It was actually a terrific save by Hugo Lloris. However, the French goalkeeper wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet as Lewis Dunk headed home to level the game up at 1-1. In the second half, Danny Welbeck thought he’d put Brighton in front. However, this goal was also ruled out after it was deemed that the ball had struck the hand of Alexis Mac Allister. Another terrible decision. In the 59th minute, both Roberto De Zerbi and Christian Stellini were sent off by the referee. Kaoru Mitoma was then brought down by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but somehow, the referee and VAR didn’t award Brighton a penalty. What an absolute joke! It then got worse for Brighton as Harry Kane scored to give Tottenham the lead in the 79th minute. It’s also worth mentioning that Brighton should’ve had another penalty after Lewis Dunk was completely held back in the penalty area. In the end, Tottenham survived this game, no other way to put it. Spurs stay 5th in the table and they host Bournemouth next time out. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, I genuinely feel really sorry for them as this has probably ended their Champions League hopes. The Seagulls drop down to 7th place and they go to Chelsea for their next league match.
Brentford 1-2 Newcastle
Newcastle pulled off a brilliant second-half comeback to take a huge victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. Ivan Toney thought he’d put Brentford in front after 9 minutes, but his goal was ruled out for offside. What happened to the clear and obvious error rule? Kevin Schade then did brilliantly well before he was completely bulldozed by Sven Botman resulting in a Brentford penalty. Ivan Toney stepped and scored... in fact, Nick Pope saved it! Joking aside, it was a really poor penalty from Brentford’s main man. However, he was about to get a second go as right before halftime, Alexander Isak committed a foul inside the area. Ivan Toney once again stepped up and scored this time to send Brentford into the break in front. 10 minutes into the second half, it was 1-1 as Joelinton’s excellent solo run resulted in David Raya scoring an own goal. In the 61st minute, it was 2-1 to Newcastle as Alexander Isak smashed the ball into the back of the Brentford net. In the end, it’s a disappointing day for Brentford as they lose ground on the teams above them. The Bees stay 9th in the table and they go to the Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers next time out. As for Newcastle, this was a terrific result for them as they stay third in the league. The Magpies’ next game is a big one away to Aston Villa.
Manchester United 2-0 Everton
Some poor defending from both Michael Keane and James Tarkowski early on allowed Marcus Rashford in on goal, but the in-form man couldn’t guide his effort past Jordan Pickford. Antony then struck the post for United before Aaron Wan-Bissaka somehow missed from super close range. Ellis Simms then had a golden chance for Everton in the 18th minute, but he completely fluffed the ball wide of the goal. In the 36th minute, Manchester United were able to get in front through Scott McTominay. In the 71st minute, a terrible mistake by Seamus Coleman allowed Marcus Rashford to play in Anthony Martial who scored to give United some breathing room. Overall, this was a positive day for Manchester United as they remain 4th in the league. Man U’s next game sees them host Sevilla in a big UEFA Europa League game before they play away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday. As for Everton, it’s another loss for them as they now find themselves in 17th place. The Toffees’ next game is at home to Fulham.
Aston Villa 2-0 Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa continued their great run of form as Nottingham Forest drop into the relegation zone. In the first half, Ollie Watkins had a couple of half chances, but early in the second half, the first real chance of the game fell to Bertrand Traore and he scored to put Aston Villa in front. I’d say I’m surprised at Jonjo Shelvey’s awful mistake, but honestly, I’m not. Emiliano Buendia came close to making it 2-0 to Aston Villa, but they would get their second goal as in the 95th minute, Ollie Watkins continued his excellent scoring run with a really nice finish. Overall, this was another good win for Aston Villa as they move up to 6th in the table! Villa’s next game sees them host Newcastle in a really exciting matchup. As for Nottingham Forest, they did absolutely nothing in this game. Forest have dropped down into the relegation zone (18th) and they host Manchester United next time out.
Leicester 0-1 Bournemouth
Bournemouth picked up a brilliant away win as Leicester City fall to yet another defeat. Philip Billing nearly put Bournemouth in front early on with a brilliant freekick, but his effort hit the post and went wide. Dominic Solanke then came close for Bournemouth, but they were able to take the lead in the 40th minute through Philip Billing. The back pass from James Maddison was absolutely shambolic. In the second half, Daniel Iversen did well to deny Solanke after some more shocking defending by Leicester City before Iversen made a few more good stops to keep the game at just 1-0. Shootout to Chris Mepham who produced a brilliant interception to deny Kelechi Iheanacho from surely making it 1-1. Overall, it’s another shocking day for Leicester City. The Foxes stay 19th in the table and their next game is away to Manchester City. As for Bournemouth, what a great win for them as they move up to 15th. The Cherries play away to Tottenham next time out.
Fulham 0-1 West Ham
West Ham picked up a massive win to hurt Fulham’s European chances. West Ham took the lead after 23 minutes through a Harrison Reed own goal. When it rains, it pours for Fulham at the moment. What I don’t get though is how the goal wasn’t disallowed as Vladimir Coufal clearly handled the ball in the build-up. In the second half, Danny Ings had a good opportunity for West Ham, but he was denied well by Bernd Leno. Andreas Pereira then looked certain to score for Fulham, but Lukasz Fabianski did a brilliant job to get a touch on the ball and push Pereira away from goal. In additional time at the end of the game, Maxwell Cornet had an unbelievable chance for the visitors, but his effort went straight into the hands of Leno. I really don’t know why Cornet didn’t square the ball for Said Benrahma to score a tap-in. In the end, though, it’s another frustrating day for Fulham as they stay 10th in the table. Fulham’s next game is away to Everton. As for West Ham, this could be a really key result for them as they move up to 14th place. The Hammers play away to KAA Gent in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday before they host league leaders Arsenal in a London derby on Sunday.
Wolves 1-0 Chelsea
Wolves picked up a big 3 points as Frank Lampard loses on his return to Chelsea. Wolves took the lead after 31 minutes through a thumping strike from Matheus Nunes. I genuinely don’t think the Portuguese midfielder could’ve struck the ball any better. Kepa then denied Diego Costa after some really poor defending from Chelsea. Chelsea’s best chance of the game fell to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but his effort was well blocked by Nathan Collins. In the end, it’s a good 3 points for Wolves whether they played well or not. Wolves move up to 13th in the table and they host Brentford next time out. As for Chelsea, it’s another bad day for them in a really bad season as they stay 11th in the table. Chelsea’s next game is away to Real Madrid in the Champions League before they host Brighton in the Premier League.
