Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 3

Newcastle 3-3 Manchester City

We start with the epic Super Sunday clash between Newcastle United and Manchester City. This was a terrific game of football where both teams played well. Man City took the lead within 5 minutes with Ilkay Gundogan but after that, Newcastle where excellent. Allan Saint Maximan caused City’s defence massive problems and by half time, Newcastle where winning 2-1. Kieran Trippier then scored a world class free kick to send Newcastle into dreamland. However, Manchester City never give up and Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva scored to level the game up for the Champions. Nick Pope was also really, really good for Newcastle and managed to pull out some great saves. Newcastle will be very happy with their performance whilst Manchester City should be happy with a point given how tough the game was. Newcastle are in a very good 6th place with 5 points whilst Manchester City are in second place with 7 points. Newcastle nest league match is away to Wolves whilst City host Palace at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

On Monday Night Football, Manchester United earnt a massive win against rivals Liverpool. Manchester United where surprisingly good last night on both the attack and the defence. Goals for Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford could be massive for United because if they find a good run of form, they will be tough to defend against. For me though, left back Tyrell Malacia was superb and looks like a really positive signing. As for Liverpool, they were really, really poor and they need to sort it out quickly. There midfield is terrible, the defence just wasn’t at it, and it felt like only Luis Diaz was really trying. Salah did get the goal though. Liverpool had 71% possession, but they didn’t really ever do anything with it. A really bad start to the season for Liverpool. Manchester United move up to 14th with the win whilst Liverpool sits down in 16th place without a victory. United’s next game is away to Southampton whilst Liverpool play at home to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth 0-3 Arsenal

Arsenal look really good. They were so much better than Bournemouth and two early goals from Martin Odegaard put them in a commanding position. William Saliba scored a great goal to make the Arsenal fans love him even more and Gabriel Jesus continues to play like a world class striker. The Gunners are really on it right now, can they keep it up? As for Bournemouth, they haven’t looked good the last couple of weeks but, they need to keep their heads up as these games won’t decide their fate in this league. Scott Parker’s men sit 15th in the table and travel to Anfield next week in another very tough encounter. Arsenal, on the other hand, sit top of the league as the only team with a 100% record. Arsenal’s next match sees them host London rivals Fulham in what should be an exciting matchup.

Leeds 3-0 Chelsea

In what was arguably the most surprising result of the weekend, Leeds beat Chelsea. Comfortably! They where the way better team and fully merited the three points. Jesse Marsch is started to prove why he has been successful at other clubs and his new signings are definitely helping with that. However, Jack Harrison and Rodrigo, two players who where there under Marcelo Bielsa, are in really good form, Rodrigo is the top scorer which shouldn’t be as big of a surprise as some people think because he was really good at Valencia. As for Chelsea, they did really well the first two weekends, but this was the complete opposite of it. Mendy, who is arguably one of the best Goalkeepers in the world, made a stupid error that saw Chelsea go 1-0 down and they never recovered. Koulibaly getting himself sent off doesn’t make their new signing look particularly good. This sort of inconsistency is why Chelsea struggled last season and why I can’t see them being a title challenger this year. This could change as it’s very early in the season, but these performances have been in their game for years now. Leeds, incredibly, sit third place with 7 points and they play away to Brighton in their next league fixture. Chelsea sits 12th place knowing they host struggling Leicester next weekend.

Fulham 3-2 Brentford

Fulham got there first win of the season at home to Brentford in a 5-goal thriller. Bobby Reid scored in the first minute and Fulham where 2-0 up come 20 minutes. Brentford got a goal just before half time and Ivan Toney levelled it up for the Bees with 20 minutes to go. Then, in the 90th minute, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored to give Fulham all 3 points. Fulham will be delighted with the result, and they sit 7th in the table with 5 points but they will find next week very difficult when they travel to Arsenal. As for Brentford, they will be disappointed given that they conceded so late on. They are still in 8th place with 4 points, but they know that they could have been in the European spots. However, they host Everton next Saturday in a game that they should get a result in.

West Ham 0-2 Brighton

Brighton got another good away result to sink West Ham to the bottom of the league. New man Thilo Kehrer took down Danny Welbeck in the penalty box before Alexis Mac Allister put the visitors in front from the spot. Leandro Trossard then scored in a goal that was made way to simple by West Ham. Given the teams Brighton have played on paper, they have done excellent. Sitting 5th in the table with 7 points should give the fans a lot of confidence. Brighton play Forest Green in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they host Leeds in the Premier League next week. West Ham need to sort themselves out because they have been terrible so far this season. They travel to Denmark to play Viborg in the UEFA Conference League qualifying match in a game they should be winning and then they play fellow strugglers Aston Villa in a game they need to win as they can’t afford to have 4 losses out of 4.

Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa

Crystal Palace got an important first victory off the season in comfortable fashion. Ollie Watkins got the visitors off to a great start with a goal inside 5 minutes after a lovely pass by Leon Bailey, but the lead was quickly cancelled out by Wilfred Zaha who scored a very nice solo goal. Zaha then saw his penalty saved by Goalkeeper Martinez, but Zaha was able to simply tap it in to put the Eagles in front. After some really nice passes, Mateta finished the game off with a superb finish to wrap up a fantastic goal. Palace deserved the 3 points and will be happy with their performance. The Eagles sit ninth in the table after 3 rounds and even though City away is very tough, it’s a game they have had good success in in previous seasons. As for Aston Villa, besides hitting the cross bar in the second half, they really didn’t do anything. Goalkeeper Martinez was once again their best player and without him, Villa could have lost by a lot more. Villa do have a win this season and sit 13th in the table but they aren’t playing very well, and they host West Ham next week in a must win game for both teams.

Tottenham 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Spurs earnt a narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves in the first game of the weekend. Harry Kane headed in the only goal of the game in the 64th minute. This was a landmark occasion for the centre forward as he has now scored a record breaking 250 goals in a Spurs shirt. This was an important result for Spurs as they weren’t at their best, but they still managed to secure the 3 points. Tottenham sit 4th in the table with 7 points and will play away to Nottingham Forest next in the last game of the weekend. As for Wolves, they did pretty well in the first half from what I’ve heard, and they can take positives from that but once again their end quality costs them. They had 20 shots in the game, yet they only managed 3 on target. Wolves currently sit in the relegation zone with 1 point, however, that’s 1 point more than they had at this stage last season. Wolves’ next game sees them host Newcastle live on SKY Sports.

Leicester City 1-2 Southampton

Leicester’s bad start to the season continued as they lost at home to Southampton. Neither team managed to get there xG above 1 but the Saints won’t care as they got the three points. James Maddison put the hosts ahead with a nice free kick that caught the visitors off guard as they expected a cross. Southampton then levelled with Che Adams getting onto the score sheet for the first time this season and he wasn’t done there as he scored with a brilliant volley to put the Saints in front. He nearly even scored a hattrick put sadly for him, he hit the post. Southampton will be very happy with this result as they now sit 11th place with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. Southampton host Manchester United in their next league game. Leicester, on the other hand, have had a terrible start to the season with only 1 point out of a possible 9. So far, Leicester are nowhere near good enough to fight for a European spot. Leicester travel to Chelsea next in a game where both teams need to bounce back.

Everton 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Everton got there first points of the season, only just though. Nottingham Forest thought they had won it when Brennan Johnson put the visitors in front with less than 10 minutes to play but Demarai Gray scored an 88th minute leveller to share the points. To be fair to Jordan Pickford, his pass to find Gray was really good. However, Everton haven’t started the season well at all and sit just outside the relegation zone in 17th place with only 1 point. Everton’s next league game is away from home against Brentford. Nottingham Forest will be disappointed with conceding late on as they where so close to two wins in a row, but they can still be happy with 4 points which has them sitting in 10th place. Out of all the signings that Forest have made, Dean Henderson is definitely the best and most important one as he once again proved how good he is. They host Tottenham Hotspur next in a really exciting matchup.
