Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 28

Brighton 3-3 Brentford

Brighton equalised three times to snatch victory away from Brentford. Pontus Jansson fired Brentford in front after 10 minutes with a lovely header. However, it has to be said that the defending was really poor. Kaoru Mitoma then made it 1-1 10 minutes later as goalkeeper Jason Steele got the assist. It was super simple which is why I have to now question the defending by Brentford. However, Brentford were back in front just a minute later through Ivan Toney. Again, the defending was poor! The Seagulls were then able to make it 2-2 just 6 minutes later through Danny Welbeck who scored a header from the back post. 4 minutes into the second half, Brentford were ahead for the third time as Ethan Pinnock scored from a nicely worked, yet simple free-kick routine. Nearing the end of the game, Deniz Undav missed a great opportunity, but the replays showed his effort deflected off the hand of Aaron Hickey. Alexis Mac Allister stepped up and smashed it home to rescue Brighton a point at home. In the end, this was an ok result for Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls have moved up to 6th in the table and their next game is away to Bournemouth tonight. As for Brentford, they’ll be disappointed to have not won this game. The Bees have moved up to 7th place though and they go to Manchester United tomorrow.

Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool

Manchester City looked on a different level to Liverpool in the second half as they picked up a huge victory. After some poor defending by Manchester City, Mohamed Salah finished well to give Liverpool the lead inside 17 minutes. 10 minutes later, the game was all square at one all after Julian Alvarez scored from a Jack Grealish cross. Less than a minute into the second half, Man City were ahead through Kevin De Bruyne. Another simple tap-in for Manchester City. Things then got even better for the hosts as Ilkay Gundogan calmly finished to give City a two-goal cushion. In the 73rd minute, Jack Grealish capped off his best performance in a Manchester City shirt by scoring a goal to make it 4-1. Overall, this was a terrific day for Manchester City. City stay in second place and their next game is away to Southampton on Saturday. As for Liverpool, this was another terrible day for them in a pretty terrible season. The Reds have dropped outside of the European places in 8th and their next game is away to Chelsea tonight.

Arsenal 4-1 Leeds

Arsenal picked up another comfortable victory to keep the gap at the top of the table at 8 points. Gabriel Jesus’ trickery was too much for Leeds United as Luke Ayling conceded the penalty. Jesus stepped up and scored to give Arsenal the lead after 35 minutes. Two minutes into the second half and it was 2-0 to Arsenal as Ben White scored after a brilliant cross from Gabriel Martinelli. Gabriel Jesus was then back in the act with a goal in the 55th minute before Rasmus Kristensen was at least able to get one back for Leeds in the 76th minute. The league leaders were then clearly annoyed about the way they conceded (Rasmus’ effort deflected off Zinchenko) so Granit Xhaka scored to make it 4-1. Overall, this was another comfortable day for the hosts at the Emirates. The Gunners remain 8 points clear of the rest of the field and their next game is away to Liverpool on Sunday. As for Leeds, this wasn’t a great day for them as they drop into the relegation zone (18th). Leeds host Nottingham Forest in a huge game tonight.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Leicester

Crystal Palace scored a dramatic, last-gasp winner which resulted in Brendan Rodgers leaving Leicester City. Victor Kristiansen nearly scored from a cross for Leicester, but his effort hit the post and came out. In the first half, Crystal Palace had lots of half chances that they weren’t able to get past Daniel Iversen and this cost them as Leicester took the lead in the 56th minute through a thumping strike from Ricardo Pereira. However, Leicester’s lead didn’t last long as Daniel Iversen’s hard work was undone by a really unlucky own goal. Eberechi Eze’s free-kick effort hit the crossbar, came down, hit the goalkeeper and went in. And then, in the 94th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored to send Selhurst Park into raptures. In the end, this was exactly what Crystal Palace needed. The Eagles stay 12th in the table after their first win in 13 games and they look to build from it away to Leeds on Sunday. As for Leicester, this could really hurt them come the end of the season. The Foxes have dropped inside the relegation zone (19th) and their next game is at home to Aston Villa tonight without Brendan Rodgers.

Bournemouth 2-1 Fulham

Bournemouth picked up a brilliant victory to move outside of the relegation zone as Fulham’s European hopes were hurt. Fulham took the lead after 16 minutes through Andreas Pereira. This was really good football by Fulham. Antonee Robinson then came close for Fulham as his thumping effort smashed off the bar and went over. Early in the second half, Bournemouth somehow failed to level the scoring, but it didn’t take them too much longer to do so as Marcus Tavernier scored one of the goals of the season in the 50th minute. In the 79th minute, Fulham keeper Bernd Leno poorly dealt with Ryan Christie’s strike which allowed Dominic Solanke to bundle the ball in and give AFC Bournemouth the lead. Overall, this is a terrific result for Bournemouth. The Cherries have moved outside the relegation zone and into 17th place. Their next game is at home to Brighton tonight. As for Fulham, this result will really hurt them as they drop down to 10th. The Cottagers' next game is at home to West Ham on Saturday.

Newcastle 2-0 Manchester United

Newcastle picked up a brilliant victory over Manchester United to move above their opponents in the table. In the first half, Newcastle had two great chances in a row, but David De Gea was able to keep both of them out. Joe Willock really should’ve scored. Joe Willock then had another good opportunity, but he blasted his effort over the bar from close range. However, in the 65th minute, Joe Willock was able to head home from close range to give Newcastle United the lead. David De Gea then pulled out another good stop as he pushed Joelinton’s headed effort onto the crossbar before Fabian Schar’s rebound hit the post. However, Newcastle weren’t to be denied a second as in the 88th minute, Callum Wilson’s headed effort hit the post and went in to seal all three points for the Magpies. Overall, this was a great day for Newcastle United. The Magpies have moved up to third in the table and their next game is away to West Ham tomorrow. As for Manchester United, this was a disappointing day for them as they drop outside the Champions League positions and into 5th place. United’s next game is at home to Brentford tomorrow.

Chelsea 0-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa inflicted a defeat on Chelsea that saw Graham Potter lose his job after just under 7 months in charge. Mykhaylo Mudryk missed a really good chance for Chelsea as his effort was saved by Emiliano Martinez before John McGinn hit the crossbar for Aston Villa. Aston Villa then took the lead after just 18 minutes through Ollie Watkins. Cucerella’s poor header sent Watkins in on goal and he lifted his effort over Kepa Arrizabalaga to give Aston Villa the lead. Mateo Kovacic then played a brilliant pass to put Mudryk through on goal, but his effort was really tame. Ben Chilwell then went and hit the post from an attempted cross before Ben Chilwell thought he’d leveled the game up with a header. However, it was ruled out as Chilwell was deemed to have fouled Ashley Young. The correct call in my opinion. In the second half, Aston Villa punished them as John McGinn scored with a beautiful strike to put the visitors in control. N’Golo Kante then had a good chance for Chelsea, but he dragged his effort wide of the post. In the end, this was another bad day for Chelsea and it’s resulted in Graham Potter losing his job. The Blues have dropped outside the top 10 (11th) and their next game is at home to Chelsea tonight. As for Aston Villa, this was a great win for them and it really propels them into a European fight. Villa have moved up to 9th in the table and they play away to Leicester City tonight.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolves

Wolves scored late to keep Nottingham Forest below them in the table. Matheus Cunha nearly put Wolves in front early on, but his effort hit the crossbar and went out for a corner. In the 38th minute, Brennan Johnson fired Nottingham Forest in front with a nice finish. However, I do think Jose Sa should’ve done better. In the second half, Wolves were appealing for a penalty after Felipe brought down Adama Traore. It wasn’t given and I’m surprised. Nottingham Forest then had a great chance to make it 2-0, but neither Dennis nor Johnson were able to put the ball in the back of the net. And then, in the 83rd minute, Daniel Podence smashed the ball past Keylor Navas to give Wolves an equalising goal. In the end, it’s a decent point for Notts Forest, but they would’ve wanted more. Forest are now 16th in the table and their next game is away to Leeds tomorrow. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, it’s an ok point for them as well. Wolves stay 13th in the table and they host Chelsea in their next game on Saturday.

Everton 1-1 Tottenham

Everton scored a late goal to deny Tottenham a crucial victory. Harry Kane nearly put Tottenham in front in the first half, but his shot was expertly blocked by Michael Keane. Kane then had a really good chance, but he guided his effort wide of the post. In the 58th minute, Abdoulaye Doucoure was shown a straight red card after his hand caught the face of Harry Kane. I definitely think Doucoure’s actions were silly, but my god did Harry Kane sell the referee. Things then got worse for Everton as Michael Keane brought down Christian Romero in the penalty area. Harry Kane stepped up and scored to give Tottenham the lead after 68 minutes. In the 88th minute, the game then became a level playing field as Lucas Moura got himself sent off with a nasty challenge. Everton then punished Tottenham as in the 90th minute, Michael Keane scored an absolute belter to gain Everton a crucial point in their battle for survival. In the end, this was a decent result for Everton Football Club. The Toffees now find themselves 15th in the table and they go to Manchester United in their next game. As for Tottenham, this result will really frustrate them as it means they only stay 4th in the table. Spurs’ next game is a big one at home to Brighton.

West Ham 1-0 Southampton

West Ham picked up a huge win over Southampton to move outside the relegation zone. West Ham took the lead after 25 minutes through Naif Aguerd’s headed effort. Jarrod Bowen then hit the crossbar for West Ham, but he really should’ve played the ball across to Lucas Paqueta. In the second half, Paul Onuachu got Southampton’s best chance of the night, but his headed effort hit the crossbar and came out. In the end, this was exactly the kind of result that West Ham United needed. The Hammers have moved up to 14th place and they host Newcastle tomorrow. As for Southampton, this was a really poor performance from them. The Saints stay bottom of the Premier League and their next game is at home to Manchester City.

Note: There won’t be a Preview or a Roundup for Gameweek 29 due to all of the other things I’ve written about over the weekend. The Premier League Previews and Roundups will return for Gameweek 30 this weekend.
