Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 25

Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United

Liverpool decimated Manchester United in what has to be one of the strangest results in football history. Liverpool took the lead just a couple of minutes before halftime through Cody Gakpo. Great finish by the Dutchman. Early in the second half, Liverpool had their second through Darwin Nunez after some shambolic and Cody Gakpo got his second goal of the game just 3 minutes later. It was another good finish from Gakpo. In the 66th minute, Liverpool had their fourth of the game as Mohamed Salah got in on the act with a thumping strike. Darwin Nunez then made it 5 with a really nice header before Salah got his second goal of the game after some more woeful defending by Manchester United. In the 88th minute, Roberto Firmino got on the act in his final season for Liverpool. Overall, what a day for Liverpool. They move up into the top 5 and they play away to Bournemouth next time out. As for Manchester United, I can’t believe this is the same team that won the Carabao Cup last week! United stay third in the table and they host Real Betis in the Europa League this Thursday.

Arsenal 3-2 Bournemouth

Arsenal pulled off a ridiculous comeback to keep themselves 5 points clear at the top of the table. In quite an amazing turn of events, Philip Billing put Bournemouth in front after just 9 seconds! Bournemouth then had a great chance to make it 2-0, but Aaron Ramsdale pulled out a great save to deny Dango Ouattara. In the second half, Marcos Senesi headed home from a corner to give the Cherries an incredible 2-0 lead at the Emirates. However, Arsenal were able to get one back through Thomas Partey just 5 minutes later. 8 minutes later, it was two-two after Ben White’s effort went over the line and in. And then, in the 97th minute, Reiss Nelson smashed the ball in from outside the box to give the Gunners a quite sensational victory. In the end, these are the wins that win you the Premier League title. Arsenal stay top of the league by 5 points and they play away to Sporting in the Europa League on Thursday. As for Bournemouth, this could be the killer blow in their survival hopes. The Cherries have dropped to last place in the Premier League and they host Liverpool this Saturday.

Brentford 3-2 Fulham

Brentford picked up a vital win to move within a point of the European places. Ethan Pinnock fired Brentford in front after just 6 minutes after his effort deflected off of Tim Ream. Both Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney hit the woodwork from freekicks and Fulham punished them as Manor Solomon headed the ball into the back of the net in the 39th minute (after Andreas Pereira’s freekick hit the woodwork)! In the second half, Brentford were awarded a penalty after Issa Diop kicked Christian Norgaard which allowed Ivan Toney to step up and score from the spot as he doesn’t miss penalties. In the 85th minute, Mathias Jensen finished off well after a brilliant solo run by Kevin Schade to give the Bees some daylight. However, Fulham did get one back as Vinicius scored in the 99th minute after a bit of poor goalkeeping by David Raya. In the end, this was a big result for Brentford as they stay in 9th place. They go to Everton next time out. As for Fulham, it’s a disappointing result for them as they stay 7th in the table. They host Arsenal in a big game for both sides on Sunday.

Brighton 4-0 West Ham

Brighton picked up another convincing victory as more pressure piles on David Moyes and West Ham United. Kaoru Mitoma showed his quality to earn Brighton a penalty (stupid challenge by Bowen though) before Alexis Mac Allister smashed home from the penalty spot to give Brighton the lead inside 18 minutes. 6 minutes into the second half, Brighton were 2-0 up after Joel Veltman chested the ball into the back of the net. In the 69th minute, Brighton scored a great team goal which was finished off by Mitoma before Julio Enciso’s effort was brilliantly tipped onto the woodwork by Alphonse Areola. In the 89th minute, Danny Welbeck scored to seal a 4-0 victory for Brighton and Hove Albion. Overall, this was another great day for Brighton as they stay in 8th place. The Seagulls play away to Leeds in their next Premier League fixture. As for West Ham, this was a pretty bad day for them. The Hammers stay in 16th and they go to Cyprus to play AEK Larnaca in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Everton

Neither Nottingham Forest nor Everton picked up the result that they wanted from this game. Everton were awarded a penalty after 10 minutes after Jonjo Shelvey clumsily brought down Dwight McNeil. Demarai Gray stepped up and converted from 12 yards to give Everton the lead. Forest were then able to level things up less than 10 minutes later as Jordan Pickford parried out Morgan Gibbs-White’s effort into Brennan Johnson’s path and the Welshman coolly finished off to level it up for the hosts. Another 10 minutes later and Everton were back in front through a headed effort by Abdoulaye Doucoure. In the 77th minute, Brennan Johnson brilliantly placed his effort into the top left-hand corner to once again get his side back in the game. In the end, Forest have one man to thank for the point they earnt from this match. Notts Forest drop to 14th in the table and they travel to Tottenham for their next fixture. As for Everton, they’ll be disappointed that they didn’t win this game as they stay in the relegation zone (18th). They host Brentford on Saturday.

Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle

Manchester City picked up an important win to keep themselves within 5 points off the top of the Premier League. Ilkay Gundogan had a decent chance in the first minute, but his headed effort went over the bar. In the 15th minute, Phil Foden ended a really good solo run by putting the ball past Nick Pope and giving Manchester City the lead (his shot did take a deflection off of Sven Botman). Sean Longstaff then had an immediate chance to level the game for the visitors, but he took too long and Nathan Ake denied him well. In the second half, just as Newcastle looked to be getting more in the game, Bernardo Silva finished excellently to give City a two-goal cushion after 67 minutes. Overall, this was a good performance by Manchester City as they stay in second place. They play away to Crystal Palace in their next match. As for Newcastle, it’s a third straight 2-0 defeat and they drop down to 6th in the table. The Magpies host Wolves on Sunday.

Southampton 1-0 Leicester

Southampton picked up a big win as Leicester suffered yet another disappointing defeat. Kelechi Iheanacho had a great chance to put Leicester in front, but somehow, his headed effort went wide off the target. Southampton were then awarded a penalty after the ball struck Timothy Castagne’s hand. James Ward-Prowse stepped up, but he was surprisingly denied by Danny Ward. However, just 3 minutes later, Southampton did take the lead through Carlos Alcaraz. It was a good finish from Alcaraz, but I do think Ward should’ve positioned himself better. In the second half, Kelechi Iheanacho had another great opportunity, but he once again headed the ball wide. Gavin Bazunu then made a shocking error giving the ball to Iheanacho, but luckily for him, the Nigerian’s bad day continued as he blasted the ball over the bar. And then, in the 95th minute, Harry Souttar had a golden opportunity, but his headed effort hit the bar and went over. In the end, this was a massive win for Southampton and it sees them move up into19th. The Saints go to Manchester United in their next match. As for Leicester, it’s another worrying defeat for them as the drop down to 15th in the table. Leicester host Chelsea on Saturday in their next league fixture.

Chelsea 1-0 Leeds

Chelsea picked up a big win at home to Leeds United. Kai Havertz was in one-on-one early in the game, but he was denied by Illan Meslier before Joao Felix smashed an effort off the crossbar. Ben Chilwell then had an amazing chance to either score or square it to teammate Felix. In the end, he didn’t do either. In the second half, Raheem Sterling had a good opportunity, but his effort went over the bar. However, in the 53rd minute, Chelsea did have their lead through Wesley Fofana. It was a really good header by the Chelsea defender, but Illan Meslier’s hesitation definitely cost his side here. In the 94th minute, Illan Meslier had a headed effort for Leeds, but his shot went straight into the hands of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Overall, this was a positive result for Chelsea. They stay 10th in the table and they play away to Leicester in their next league game. As for Leeds United, it’s another away defeat for them as they stay in 17th place. They host Brighton in their next match on Saturday.

Wolves 1-0 Tottenham

Dejan Kulusevski was denied well early on by Jose Sa before Pedro Porro smashed the crossbar with his free-kick effort. In the second half, Heung-Min Son smashed the ball off the crossbar after it looked like they’d committed a foul earlier on in the build-up. Wolves then came close to scoring themselves a few times, including Raul Jimenez’s headed effort being saved well by Fraser Forster. And then, in the 82nd minute, Forster denied Jimenez well again, but the ball rebounded to Adama Traore who finished with a ridiculous motion to put Wolverhampton Wanderers in front. In the end, this was a terrific result for Wolves. Wolves move up to 13th in the table and they go to Newcastle next time out. As for Tottenham, it’s another disappointing day for them as they stay 4th in the table. Spurs host A.C Milan tonight in a huge Champions League tie.

Aston Villa 1-0 Crystal Palace

After just 5 minutes, Crystal Palace thought they’d taken the lead through Wilfried Zaha. However, his effort was then ruled out by VAR due to him being offside. It was a bit of a shame for him as the finish was excellent. In the 27th minute, Aston Villa took the lead due to a Joachim Andersen own goal. This goal just sums up Crystal Palace at the moment. Ollie Watkins then had an unbelievable chance to make it 2-0, but his effort hit the outside of the post and went out for a goal kick. He really should’ve scored. In the second half, Cheick Oumar Doucoure received two yellow cards in 5 minutes meaning he was going to be having an early bath. In the end, Villa can be happy with the victory as they stay in 11th place. Their next game sees them play away to fellow claret and blue side West Ham. As for Crystal Palace, they just can’t win to save their lives at the moment. The Eagles stay in 12th place (yet again) and they host Manchester City in their next match.
