Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 19

Brighton 3-0 Liverpool

Brighton absolutely stuffed Liverpool! Brighton took the lead a minute into the first half through Solly March. Kaoru Mitoma played the ball across the box and March was simply able to tap it in. 7 minutes later, both Brighton and Solly March had scored again. It was a brilliant finish by March. With less than 10 minutes to go, Danny Welbeck brilliantly made it 3-0. He lobbed the ball over Joe Gomez before he volleyed it past Alisson. Also, Solly March got the assist. Overall, what a brilliant day for Brighton and Hove Albion. They destroyed one of the best football teams over the past 5 seasons and the win moves them up to 7th. They go to Leicester in their next league game. As for Liverpool, this was a terrible performance by them. The loss sees them drop down to 9th place and after they play away to Wolves in the FA Cup, they host Chelsea in a must-win game for both sides.

Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City

Manchester United picked up a hugely controversial win over their local rivals Manchester City. After a pretty dull first half, Pep Guardiola brought on Jack Grealish in the 57th minute. Three minutes later, Jack headed Manchester City in front. Great ball from De Bruyne. In the 78th minute, Marcus Rashford was played in on goal and he ended up leaving the ball for Bruno Fernandes to score. I cannot understand how this was given a goal. Rashford was clearly offside and he literally ran where the ball was before Fernandes got to it. Also, Akanji stopped running because he knew Rashford was offside. Just 4 minutes later, Marcus Rashford made it 2-1. It was a decent goal from United’s point of view, but that would never have happened if the first goal had of been disallowed. In the end, this was a big win for United and they stay in fourth place. They go to Crystal Palace on Wednesday. As for Manchester City, they will feel very hard done by. City are still in second place, but they now find themselves 8 points off the top of the table. They host Tottenham Hotspur in their next league game (on Thursday).

Everton 1-2 Southampton

Southampton continued their great week by handing Everton yet another loss. Everton took the lead in the first half through Amadou Onana’s header, but just a minute into the second half, James Ward-Prowse made it one all with a brilliant goal. If you watched his goal and you’d never heard of him before, you’d think he’s a prolific goalscorer. In the 78th minute, JWP made it 2-1 to Southampton by scoring from yet another freekick. If Southampton stay up this season, it will be because of him. Overall, another bad day for Everton. This was a game they needed to win and to lose it is pretty awful really. The Toffees now sit 19th in the PL table and they go to West Ham next time out in another crucial game. As for Southampton, they’re now playing with some confidence. The Saints still sit bottom of the league and they host Aston Villa this Saturday.

Aston Villa 2-1 Leeds

Aston Villa got off to the perfect start against Leeds United as Leon Bailey put the hosts in front after just 3 minutes. In the second half, Leon Bailey smashed the ball at Illan Meslier and he ended up pushing the ball straight out to Emi Buendia who made it two-nil to Aston Villa. In the 83rd minute, Wilfried Gnonto made a brilliant solo run which was capped off by a goal from Patrick Bamford. In the end though, Aston Villa held on to get the win. It was a solid win for Villa and it sees them stay in 11th place. They go to Southampton next time out. As for Leeds, they were probably hoping for more than this. Leeds now sit 14th in the table and after they host Cardiff in an FA Cup replay, they host Brentford in the league.

Tottenham 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal are asserting their dominance at the top of the Premier League table! In the 14th minute, Bukayo Saka played a ball across the box and somehow, Hugo Lloris found a way to fumble the ball into the back of the net to give Arsenal the lead in the North London Derby. Heung-Min Son then had a good chance for Tottenham, but his effort was denied by Aaron Ramsdale before Thomas Partey’s effort smashed off of the post. And then, in the 36th minute, Arsenal were two in front through Martin Odegaard. Odegaard struck from long range and his shot fired into the bottom right-hand corner of Hugo Lloris’ net. In the second half, Spurs had some decent chances, but Ramsdale denied them well to keep Arsenal two goals in front. Overall, this was not the result that Tottenham wanted whatsoever. The loss sees them stay in 5th place and they and they go to Manchester City on Thursday for a Premier League clash. As for Arsenal, it’s another great win for them. The Gunners now lead the rest of the field by 8 points and they host Manchester United next Sunday in another huge clash.

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Leicester

Nottingham Forest beat their local rivals Leicester to move further up in the Premier League table. 10 minutes into the second half, Brennan Johnson was played in one-on-one and he went around Danny Ward before he placed the ball into the back of the net. It was then ruled out for offside, but after they checked with VAR, the goal was given. With less than 10 minutes to go, Morgan Gibbs-White kept onto the ball (somehow) before he played a great ball over to Brennan Johnson who smartly finished to give him and his team a second goal and all 3 points as well. Overall, this was another really good and important result for Nottingham Forest. The win has moved them up to 13th (which seems crazy given they’ve been at the bottom for most of the season) and they go to Bournemouth for another winnable tie. As for Leicester, it’s just another poor result/performance from them. The loss sees them drop down to 15th place and they host high-flying Brighton next Saturday.

Brentford 2-0 Bournemouth

In the 39th minute, Ivan Toney was brought down by Marcos Senesi and the referee awarded the Bees a penalty. I’m not sure if it’s a penalty or not as even though Senesi is holding onto Toney, Ivan does fall down pretty easily. Anyway, Ivan Toney stepped up and scored to put Brentford in front. In the 75th minute, Mathias Jensen put the ball past Neto to give the Bees a 2-0 lead and all three points. In the end, this was another positive result for Brentford. The win sees them move up to 8th place and they go to Leeds in their next fixture. As for Bournemouth, it’s now six straight losses for them and it means they now sit in 17th place in the table. The Cherries host Nottingham Forest in a huge game this Saturday.

Newcastle 1-0 Fulham

Newcastle left it late to pick up a big 3 points against Fulham. After not much happened in the first half, Fabian Schar came super close for Newcastle from a freekick, but his attempt hit the post and came back out. Later on, in the half, Fulham were awarded a penalty after Kieran Trippier kicked Bobby Reid. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored from the spot, but his effort was then ruled out as he kicked the ball onto his other foot. Heartbreak for the former Magpie. And then, in the 89th minute, Callum Wilson played the ball across the six-yard box and Alexander Isak finished it off to give Newcastle all 3 points and send St. James’ Park into a frenzy. Overall, this was a big win for Newcastle and it’ll be interesting to see just how big of a goal that ends up turning out to be for both sides. Newcastle stay third in the table and they go to Crystal Palace in their next match. As for Fulham, they’ll be frustrated with this result. Fulham stay sixth though and they host Tottenham on next week’s Monday Night Football.

Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace

Chelsea picked up an important victory to relieve some of the pressure off of Graham Potter. Both teams had good chances in the first half, but both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Vicente Guaita managed to keep them out. In the second half, Kai Havertz got onto Hakim Ziyech’s cross and he headed the ball past Guaita to give Chelsea the lead. Havertz really should’ve scored a hattrick of headers, but his effort in the 80th minute went wide (somehow). In the end, this was a massive win for Chelsea and they will hope that this result can give them some confidence. Chelsea still sit 10th in the table and they go to Liverpool for a huge matchup next time out. As for Crystal Palace, it’s now 3 losses in a row in all competitions for them and they now sit 12th in the table. The Eagles host Manchester United Wednesday night.

Wolves 1-0 West Ham

Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up another positive result to move them outside of the relegation zone for the first time in months. After West Ham took a corner, Wolves hit them on the counterattack and Daniel Podence ended it by putting Wolves 1-0 in front. Overall, this was another really positive step for Wolves under manager Julen Lopetegui and they now sit in 16th place. They host Liverpool in an FA Cup replay tomorrow before they go to Manchester City on Sunday. As for West Ham, they would’ve wanted a lot more from this game. The Hammers now find themselves sitting in the relegation places (18th) and they face Everton next week in a game they really shouldn’t be losing.

Note: I’ve recently moved house and my Wi-Fi still doesn’t work yet so I had to watch the highlights through Match of the Day 2. That’s why some games are longer than others.
