Everton 1-4 Brighton
More pressure was piled on Frank Lampard as his Everton side were stuffed by Brighton. After a poor mistake from Nathan Patterson, Kaoru Mitoma coolly went around Conor Coady before he placed the ball past Jordan Pickford to give Brighton the lead. Evan Ferguson came close in the second half, but his effort hit the post and went wide. However, in the second half, Evan Ferguson got his goal to make it 2-0 too Brighton and Hove Albion. Just 3 minutes later, Brighton scored again through Solly March. It was partly excellent play from March, but the Everton defending was pretty poor. And then, just 3 minutes later, Brighton got their fourth! Idrissa Gana Gueye’s attempted back pass went straight to Pascal Gross and one of Brighton’s star players went and lobbed Jordan Pickford to give Brighton a four-goal lead. In additional time, Everton were awarded a penalty after Robert Sanchez brought down Alex Iwobi. Demarai Gray stepped up and scored to at least give something for Everton fans to smile about. In the end, this was a horrendous performance by Everton Football Club. The loss sees them drop down into the relegation zone and they face Manchester United in the FA Cup tonight. As for Brighton, this performance showcased just how good they’ve become. The Seagulls sit 8th in the table and they go to Middlesbrough for an FA Cup clash next time out.
Crystal Palace 0-4 Tottenham
Four second-half goals gave Tottenham a big win against London rivals Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace came close a couple of times in the first half, but the first big chance of the game fell to Harry Kane and he scored to give Tottenham the lead after 48 minutes. 5 minutes later, Harry Kane got his and Tottenham’s second to put them firmly in control. It was a great finish by Spurs’ main man. 15 minutes later, Spurs were three-nil up through Matt Doherty and in the 72nd minute, Heung-Min Son made it 4! Overall, this was a pretty bad day for Crystal Palace. The Eagles now sit 12th in the table and they host Southampton next time out in the FA Cup. As for Tottenham, this was exactly the response they needed after last week's defeat. Spurs stay in 5th place and they host League 1 Portsmouth in the FA Cup tomorrow.
Brentford 3-1 Liverpool
Brentford picked up another great win over a really poor Liverpool side. Darwin Nunez had a great chance to put Liverpool ahead early on, but his effort was blocked by Ben Mee. In the 19th minute, Brentford were in front after the ball deflected off of Ibrahima Konate and into the Liverpool net. Brentford then thought they’d scored from another corner, but Yoane Wissa’s goal was ruled out due to him being in an offside position. Yoane Wissa was then celebrating again, but this goal was also ruled out as it deflected off of Ben Mee and Mee was in an offside position. Crazily enough, Wissa put the ball into the back of the net for a third time and this time, it counted! Wissa’s header crossed the line before Alisson pushed it out meaning the Bees were going into halftime leading Liverpool by two goals to nil. In the second half, Darwin Nunez finally put the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out as the Liverpool forward was offside! Just two minutes later, Liverpool were able to get back into the game through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s header. In the end though, it didn’t result too anything as in the 84th minute, Bryan Mbeumo scored to send the Brentford fans into a frenzy. What a result for Brentford! The win sees them move up to 9th place and they host West Ham United in their next game (FA Cup). As for Liverpool, this was a really poor performance from them. Liverpool stay in 6th place, but they now find themselves 16 points off the top of the table. They host Wolves in the FA Cup tomorrow night.
Leeds 2-2 West Ham
27 minutes into the game between Leeds United and West Ham United, the hosts went in front through Wilfried Gnonto. From what I’ve seen from this guy, he looks pretty good. Right before halftime, West Ham were awarded a penalty after Pascal Struijk brought down Jarrod Bowen. For me, this shouldn’t have been given as a penalty. West Ham played on and they missed. Anyway, Lucas Paqueta stepped up and he scored to level the game up at 1-all. Right at the start of the second half, Brenden Aaronson gave the ball away and Gianluca Scamacca scored to give the lead to the Hammers. At one point in the game, Vladimir Coufal took out Crysencio Summerville and the referee didn’t give anything so Summerville made sure to get his revenge by taking him out. With less than 20 minutes to go, Rodrigo scored for Leeds to level the game up at 2-2. Both Liam Cooper and Rodrigo came close to winning the game for Leeds but neither man was quite able to do it so the game finished 2-2. A point isn’t great for Leeds, but it also isn’t terrible. Leeds now sit 14th in the table and they go to Cardiff in the FA Cup. As for West Ham, a point is better than a loss and the Hammers stay in 17th place. West Ham face Brentford on Saturday in the FA Cup.
Manchester United 3-0 Bournemouth
Manchester United picked up another good win to move closer to the top 3. Manchester United took the lead after 23 minutes through Casemiro. What a surprise that Bournemouth conceded from a set piece. 5 minutes into the second half, United were 2-0 in front through Luke Shaw. To be fair to Shaw, he started this move deep in his own half. Anthony Martial had a great chance to make it 3-0 to United but he missed before Bournemouth had a few really good chances, but they just couldn’t take them. Alejandro Garnacho came close to adding United a third goal, but his effort hit the post and went wide. However, Marcus Rashford was able to score to make it 3-0 to United and seal their sixth successive victory. This was another comfortable home win for United and they stay in 4th place. They host Everton in the FA Cup in just under a couple of hours. As for Bournemouth, they were easily second-best in this game and they have dropped down to 16th place. They host Championship leaders Burnley in the FA Cup tomorrow.
Aston Villa 1-1 Wolves
Points were shared out equally between two west midlands clubs on Wednesday night. Wolves took the lead through Daniel Podence after just 12 minutes. This goal was really well done by Podence. Matheus Nunes had a great chance to make it 2-0 to Wolves, but Emiliano Martinez pulled out a great stop before Hwang Hee-Chan was nearly sent off for a bad challenge. In the second half, Ludwig Augustinsson thought he had leveled the game up for his side, but Max Kilman brilliantly cleared the ball off the line. However, Villa were able to get the equaliser through Danny Ings. It was a good finish from Ings, but Jose Sa’s slip helped him a lot. In the last minute of normal time, Rayan Ait Nouri made a brilliant solo run, but his effort was denied by Emi Martinez. And then, in the 94th minute, Leon Bailey found himself in one-on-one with the goalkeeper and even though he went round Sa, he couldn’t find the back of the net so the game finished all square at 1 all. Considering Aston Villa beat Tottenham away from home, they will probably be a bit disappointed with this result. However, they’ve actually moved up to 11th in the table and they host 2nd in League Two Stevenage on Sunday. As for Wolves, they should be pretty happy with a point. Wolves stay in 19th place and they go to Anfield for an FA Cup clash with Liverpool tomorrow.
Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City
Manchester City picked up a big win away from home at Chelsea to move within 5 points of the top of the Premier League table. The best chance of the first half saw Erling Haaland get in behind the defenders, but his effort went over the bar. 19-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka came close to putting the hosts in front, but his effort hit the post and came out. In the second half, Nathan Ake came close to putting City in front, but his effort came back off the bar before Thiago Silva came close for Chelsea. In the 63rd minute, Manchester finally struck first through Riyad Mahrez. Kevin De Bruyne played the ball over to Jack Grealish before Jack played a great ball across the face of the goal which allowed Mahrez to score a simple tap-in. In the end, it’s another loss for Graham Potter as Chelsea manager. The Blues currently sit 10th in the league and they play Manchester City again in the FA Cup on Sunday. As for City, this was a really important result for them. The win sees them move to just 5 points behind leaders Arsenal and they welcome Chelsea to the Etihad Stadium for a rematch on Sunday.
Southampton 0-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest picked up a great win over Southampton to move out of the relegation zone. Che Adams had a good chance early on in the game, but he struck his shot wide and Brennan Johnson had a really good chance for Nottingham Forest, but his effort hit the crossbar and went over. In the 27th minute, Lyanco poorly gave the ball away to Brennan Johnson before Johnson played the ball across to Taiwo Awoniyi who put Forest in front. In the second half, Southampton made another poor mistake at the back, but luckily for them, Awoniyi didn’t punish them. In the end, this was not a good result for Southampton. It’s a loss that sees them stay bottom of the Premier League table and they go to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup tomorrow. As for Nottingham Forest, this was a really good result for them. The win means Forest have now moved all the way up to 15th place and they go to struggling Championship side Blackpool in the FA Cup.
Leicester 0-1 Fulham
17 minutes into the game, Fulham were ahead through Aleksandar Mitrovic. Willian put in a brilliant ball that went over two Leicester defenders before Mitrovic finished well to put his side in front. Ayoze Perez then had a great chance to level the game up for the Foxes, but somehow, he blasted his shot over the bar. Harvey Barnes had a good chance in the second half, but Bernd Leno made a good save before he made another good save to deny Jamie Vardy. Leicester City created more good chances for themselves, but Leno denied them again before Youri Tielemans’ effort smashed off the crossbar. Harry Wilson had a great chance for Fulham late on which he didn’t take, but it didn’t matter as Fulham were able to hold Leicester out to seal all 3 points at the King Power. It’s three Premier League losses out of 3 for Leicester since the World Cup and they stay in 13th place. Their next game sees them go to the worst team in the football league (Gillingham). As for Fulham, it’s another great result for them and it sees them stay in 7th place. They face an away day at Hull in their next fixture.
Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
Despite all of their goal-scoring prowess, Arsenal just couldn’t find a way past the Newcastle United defense. Arsenal created a few decent chances in the first half, but they couldn’t take them before Joelinton had a great chance to put Newcastle in front. In the second half, Gabriel Martinelli came really close with a header, but his effort went just wide of the post. Just before the end of normal time, Eddie Nketiah had a really good opportunity, but his effort was well saved by Nick Pope. In additional time, Arsenal were claiming for a penalty after the ball struck the hand of Jacob Murphy. If I’m being honest, I would have wanted the penalty if that happened against my team. In the end, it wasn’t given and both Arsenal and Newcastle were forced to share a point each. It’s not a terrible result for Arsenal, but they would have wanted to get all 3 points. The result sees the Gunners' lead at the top of the table drop down to 5 points and they go to league one Oxford in their next game in the FA Cup on Monday. As for Newcastle, a point is a solid result for them. The Magpies stay in third place and they go to high-flying Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup tomorrow.
