Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 13

Arsenal 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Arsenal destroyed Nottingham Forest to move back up to the top of the table. Arsenal took the lead after just 5 minutes through Gabriel Martinelli. Bukayo Saka lifted the ball into the penalty area and Martinelli was there to head it home. Slightly worryingly, Bukayo Saka went down injured. That could be a big loss for both Arsenal and England. 4 minutes into the second half, Reiss Nelson made it 2-0. Nelson was then on the act again just 3 minutes later, what a great substitution he proved to be! Arsenal then went 4-0 up through a lovely strike from Thomas Partey. 3 goals in just 8 minutes for the Gunners. Martin Odegaard then thumped the ball home in the 78th minute to make it 5-0. It was a great day for Arsenal as they move back up to the top of the Premier League table. Arsenal host FC Zurich on Thursday in their final Europa League Group game before they go to Chelsea next Sunday for a big London Derby. As for Nottingham Forest, it was a bad day for them and they stay at the bottom of the table. They host Brentford next Saturday.

Brighton 4-1 Chelsea

Brighton stuffed Chelsea on Graham Potter’s return to the AMEX. Pretty much straight away, Thiago Silva headed the ball off the line on two separate occasions. World Class defending from the Brazilian. It didn’t take Brighton too long though as Leandro Trossard put the Seagulls ahead inside 5 minutes. Just 10 minutes later, Brighton were 2-0 up through a Ruben Loftus-Cheek own goal. Chelsea should have got a goal back but neither Connor Gallagher nor Christian Pulisic could put their chances away. Just 3 minutes before halftime, Brighton were 3-0 up through another own goal, this time by Trevor Chalobah. Kai Havertz scored for Chelsea early in the second half to give them some hope. It wasn’t good goalkeeping though. In additional time, Brighton handed more misery to Chelsea when Pascal Gross scored to make it 4-1. Mendy pulled off a couple of good saves in the build-up to this goal, but his defenders were shocking with their attempts to clear the ball. Brighton finally have a win under manager Roberto De Zerbi and it was some win too. They sit 8th in the table and they go to the Molineux to take on Wolves in their next match. As for Chelsea, they suffer their first loss under Graham Potter and it was a real bad one. Chelsea drop down to sixth place and after they host Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, they host Arsenal on Sunday in a huge game for both teams.

Bournemouth 2-3 Tottenham

Tottenham left it very late to gain a very important 3 points. Bournemouth took the lead in the 22nd minute through Kieffer Moore. It was a brilliant goal; the team play was superb and the finish from Moore was excellent. Heung-Min Son played a lovely ball in and it hit the post after hitting the top of Adam Smith’s head. Less than 5 minutes into the second half, Bournemouth were 2-0 up. Who scored, none other than Kieffer bleeding Moore again! Let’s hope he performs like this in the World Cup. Tottenham then got one back in the 57th minute through Ryan Sessegnon; he was about to be taken off! Tottenham were then level through Ben Davies, another goal from a Welshman. Mark Travers will be disappointed though as he was blocked by his own player. And then, in the 92nd minute, Rodrigo Bentancur put the ball past the goalkeeper to pull off a remarkable turnaround for Spurs. This result will hurt Bournemouth. They were looking like they were going to earn a famous victory, but it just didn’t happen and to lose the game is really harsh. They sit 14th in the table and go to Leeds next time out. As for Tottenham, their second half turnaround could prove to be vital later on in the year, particularly given their lack of wins recently. They are still sitting in third place in the league table and they go to Marseille for an absolutely crucial Champions League tomorrow. After that, they host Liverpool in another massive fixture.

Newcastle 4-0 Aston Villa

Newcastle continued their excellent season by thrashing Aston Villa. In additional time in the first half, Ashley Young stupidly blocked Miguel Almiron’s shot with his arm. Newcastle were awarded a penalty and Callum Wilson calmly dispatched to put Newcastle in front. 10 minutes into the second half, Callum Wilson headed home from a few yards out to make it 2-0. It then got even better for them as just 3 minutes later, Joelinton scored to secure the victory. That doesn’t mean they were done though as Miguel Almiron got on the scoresheet with a brilliant strike. He’s having such a resurgence this season. Also, Callum Wilson saw his header hit the bar. That was really unlucky as he deserved a hattrick and Jacob Murphy then hit the post. Anyway, Newcastle continue this amazing run which sees them stay in the top 4. They go to Southampton next Sunday. As for Aston Villa, it was a really bad day for them and they now sit 16th in the table, just a point above the relegation zone. They host Manchester United in their next fixture.

Liverpool 1-2 Leeds

Leeds pulled out a huge win as Liverpool lost again! Leeds were ahead after just 4 minutes through Rodrigo. The back pass from Joe Gomez wasn’t great and Allison’s slip made it even worse. Just shocking. Leeds’ lead only lasted 10 minutes though as Mohamed Salah levelled the game up at 1-1. Brenden Aaronson came close to putting the visitors back in front, but his shot came flying off the woodwork. In the second half, Darwin Nunez had a really good opportunity, but his shot was expertly saved by Meslier in goal. Meslier wasn’t done there though as he made another good stop to once again deny Darwin Nunez. And then, in the 89th minute, Crysencio Summerville made it 2-1 to send the Leeds squad into a frenzy. The loss here means Liverpool have lost back-to-back League games against teams inside the bottom 3. They currently sit 9th in the table and after an important Champions League game against Napoli tomorrow, they go to Tottenham for an even bigger game on Sunday. As for Leeds United, this was a brilliant win for them and they have now moved up to 15th spot in the table. Their next match sees them host Bournemouth this Saturday.

Brentford 1-1 Wolves

Both Brentford and Wolves took home a point after a one all draw. After a nothing first half, Brentford were in front in the 50th minute through Ben Mee. A great volleyed strike inside the penalty area. Just 2 minutes later though, Wolves were back level through Ruben Neves. This was a typical Ruben Neves strike from outside the box. Diego Costa had a half chance, but it was comfortably saved by David Raya. Diego Costa then created himself another half chance and Raya definitely had to work harder to save that attempt. Costa was once again back in the action, but this time, he was shown a straight red card for headbutting Ben Mee. This was stupid from Costa, but it is also Diego Costa so I’m not too surprised. A draw means Brentford are without a win in their last 3 games and they sit 11th in the Premier League table. They go to Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Wolves, it was a decent point for them, but they stay in 19th place. They host Brighton at the Molineux on Saturday.

Leicester 0-1 Manchester City

A bit of magic from Kevin De Bruyne saw City pick up the win. Julian Alvarez had a decent chance in the 14th minute, but his shot was saved by Danny Ward. Bernardo Silva had a half chance just a couple of minutes later, but once again, Danny Ward kept the game at 0-0. And then, just a few minutes into the second half, Kevin De Bruyne scored a stunning freekick goal to put Manchester City in front. KDB’s Belgium teammate Youri Tielemans then had a terrific strike of his own and it forced Ederson to pull out a world class save as he tipped the ball onto the bar. Nothing else really happened, it wasn’t the best game of football. After 7 points from 3 games, Leicester suffer a loss which means they are now once again in the bottom 3. They go to Everton in their next fixture. As for Manchester City, it was an important win for them as they didn’t do that much. They are still in second place in the Premier League table and after they host Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday, they welcome Fulham for a Premier League clash this Saturday.

Manchester United 1-0 West Ham

Marcus Rashford scored his 100th Manchester United goal as Man U climbed up the table. Earlier on in the first half, Marcus Rashford headed the ball into the arms of Lukas Fabianski. Later on, in the 38th minute, Rashford headed the ball past the keeper, into the roof of the net to give Manchester United the lead. Cristiano Ronaldo had a good chance in the second half but he scuffed his shot wide. Very unlike him. Michael Antonio did a really good job to shrug off Scott McTominay and his shot was then saved by David De Gea before he pulled out another good stop to deny Kurt Zouma. Late on, McTominay crossed the ball in and Fred met the ball with a header. Unfortunately for him, his effort could only hit the post. And then, in the 93rd minute, Declan Rice pulled out a bullet strike, but his effort was denied by David De Gea. What a great stop from United’s number 1. Another positive result for Manchester United means they now sit 5th in the table. They go to Real Sociedad on Thursday needing a win to top their Europa League group before they play away to Aston Villa on Sunday. As for West Ham United, the loss means they drop down to 13th. They travel to Romania to take on FC FCSB in the Europa Conference League before they host Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

In the first half, Eberechi Eze fired the ball at the goal before his shot was tipped wide by Gavin Bazunu. In the 38th minute, Wilfred Zaha won the ball of full back Lyanco cleanly before he played in Left back Tyrick Mitchell who played the ball across for Odsonne Edouard who was able to tap the ball home to make it 1-0 to the Eagles. In the second half, James Ward Prowse played the ball into Che Adams who was in 1-on-1 with the keeper, but Guaita made the save comfortably after Adams poor shot went straight at him. Right on the hour mark, Stuart Armstrong’s shot hit the post and came back out. Multiple sloppy errors from Mitchell then allowed Che Adams another opportunity, but once again, his strike was too close to the keeper. Crystal Palace got themselves the result they needed after a terrible day last week. The win over Southampton now means they sit in a pretty good 10th place and they face London rivals West Ham next time out. As for Southampton, their unbeaten run came to an end and they now sit 17th in the table, just a point off the drop zone. They will host Newcastle in their next fixture.

Fulham 0-0 Everton

Fulham had a total of 24 shots, yet they were unable to get on the scoresheet in a nil-nil draw with Everton. Bernd Leno made a good save early on in the game before Jordan Pickford pulled out a fine stop to deny Willian. In the match, Aleksandar Mitrovic made a tackle that saw him receive a yellow card. I’ve seen some people say that it should be a red card, but in my opinion, a yellow was the right call as it was a clear accident. Captain Tim Ream came super close with a header, but it went just wide of the target. Fulham will be frustrated that they couldn’t pick up all 3 points, but they are still in a good 7th spot. They face a big test next week as they go to the Etihad Stadium to take on the Champions Manchester City. As for Everton, it’s now 4 points from their last 2 games and they are sitting in a pretty decent 12th place. They host Leicester City this Saturday.
