Premier League Preview: Gameweek 16

Brentford VS Tottenham

After 43 days, the Premier League is finally back! Brentford ended the first part of the season in perfect fashion by beating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad. They come into the second part of the season in 10th place. Spurs also picked up a victory, theirs coming against Leeds (4-3). Right now, Tottenham sit 4th in the Premier League table. Since 2021, Spurs have won 2 of their 3 meetings with Brentford and the Bees failed to score in all 3 meetings. For Brentford, this is an opportunity to pick up another good victory. They are ranked 10th in GPG (1.5) and they haven’t won a home game in their previous 4 attempts. As for Tottenham, this is a game that they should be winning. They are ranked 3rd in GPG (2.1) and 11th in GCPG.

My Prediction: 2-0

Crystal Palace VS Fulham

Why have 1 London Derby when you can have two? The last time Crystal Palace played, they suffered a disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest but they still sit in a pretty positive 11th place. Fulham also lost against Manchester United and they ended the first part of the season sitting in a pretty amazing 9th place. In their last 6 meetings, Palace have won out 3 times compared to Fulham’s 1 victory. That last victory actually came all the way back in 2013. For Crystal Palace, they are looking for a win to move them into the top 10.. They are also ranked 15th in GPG (1.1). As for Fulham, they’ve had a great start to the season as they are ranked 7th in GPG (1.6). They have also been awarded more penalties than any other club this season (5).

My Prediction: 0-0

Everton VS Wolves

Both Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are hoping for a much better second half to their seasons than they have had so far. Everton were thrashed (twice) by Bournemouth before the break and they currently sit 17th. Wolves lost in their last league game (2-0 vs Arsenal) but they managed to pick up a 2-0 victory over Gillingham in the Carabao Cup this past week. Wolves currently sit bottom of the table. In their last 12 meetings, Everton have managed to pick up 5 wins compared to Wolves’ 4. Wolves won both of last season's meetings. For Everton, they actually haven’t found the back of the net in the Premier League in any of their last 3 games. They are also ranked 18th in both GPG (0.7) and their overall home record. As for Wolves, new man Julen Lopetegui is going to need all of his experience to keep Wolves in the Premier League. They have the worst goal-scoring record in the league (0.5 GPG) and they have the second-worst away record in the league.

My Prediction: 0-1

Leicester VS Newcastle

Leicester City ended their first part of the season in good form and that continued with a 3-0 win away to MK Dons in the cup. The Foxes currently sit 13th so they’ll be looking to improve that further over the next 5 months. Newcastle beat Chelsea in their last Premier League game before the break and they managed to pick up another win on Tuesday (1-0 vs Bournemouth). Newcastle currently sit in an amazing third place. In their previous 16 meetings, Leicester have beaten Newcastle 10 times whilst Newcastle have picked up 5 wins. For Leicester, they have won all four of their previous competitive fixtures but they have the 4th worst home record in the league. They are ranked 6th in GPG though (1.7). As for Newcastle, they’ve managed to pick up a perfect 15 points in their previous 5 league games and they also have the third-best away record in the league. They are also ranked 5th in GPG (1.9) so this should be an exciting one.

My Prediction: 2-3

Southampton VS Brighton

Southampton lost to Liverpool in their final game before the World Cup but they managed to pick up a 2-1 victory over league 1 Lincoln in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. They come into the second half of the season in 19th place. Brighton lost at home to Aston Villa before the break and they were then shockingly eliminated from the Carabao Cup on penalties by League One Charlton. They do sit 7th in the league though. In their last 16 meetings, the Saints have won 7 times compared to the Seagulls’ two. Both games ended as draws last season. For Southampton, they also have the worst home record in the entire league which is pretty concerning. They are also ranked 16th in GPG (0.9) and they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 6 games. As for Brighton, they currently sit 6th in the away league table. They are ranked 8th in GPG (1.6) and they are also ranked 9th in GCPG (1.4).

My Prediction: 0-2

Aston Villa VS Liverpool

Aston Villa’s last competitive game saw them pick up a great win away from home to Brighton (2-1). They come into this game sitting in 12th. Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 in their final game before the break but they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup this week by Manchester City. Liverpool currently sit 6th in the table. In their last 21 meetings, Liverpool have won 13 times compared to Villa’s 6. Liverpool have won all 4 of their previous meetings. For Aston Villa, they have the sixth-best home record in the league and they will hope to use that today. They are currently ranked 14th in GPG (1.1) and 12th in GCPG (1.5). As for Liverpool, they are looking to have a much stronger second half of the season. Liverpool are currently ranked 4th in GPG (2.0) and they are ranked 2nd in big chances created.

My Prediction: 1-3

Arsenal VS West Ham

Another one! Arsenal ended the first part of the season with a 2-0 in Wolverhampton that sees them lead the rest of the field by 5 points. West Ham suffered a 2-0 defeat in their last game (vs Leicester) and they currently sit in 16th, just a point above the relegation zone. In their last 23 meetings, Arsenal have won 78% of the time compared to West Ham’s 9%. For Arsenal, the big question around them is whether they can continue to perform as well as they did in the first part of the season. They are currently ranked 2nd in GPG (2.4) and they have a 100% record at home in the league this season. As for West Ham, they need to improve if they are to keep themselves in the Premier League. They are currently ranked 17th in both GPG (0.8) and their overall away record.

My Prediction: 3-0

Chelsea VS Bournemouth

Chelsea ended their first part of the season by losing to Newcastle 1-0. They currently sit 8th in the table which isn’t great. Bournemouth picked up a great 3-0 win over Everton before the break but they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup last Tuesday. The Cherries currently sit 14th in the league table. In their previous 13 meetings, Chelsea have won out 8 times compared to Bournemouth’s 4. For Chelsea, they need to improve if they want to finish in the European places. Chelsea are currently ranked 13th in GPG (1.2) and they only have the 12th-best home record in the league. As for Bournemouth, they will aim to continue with their positive first half of the season. They are currently ranked 12th in GPG (1.2) and they haven’t won any of their last 5 away games.

My Prediction: 1-1

Manchester United VS Nottingham Forest

Manchester United went into the World Cup break in good form and they carried that on with a 2-0 victory over Burnley in the Carabao Cup. They come into the second part of the season in 5th place. Nottingham Forest pulled out a good win over Crystal Palace before the break and they pulled out an impressive 4-1 victory over Blackburn in the Cup last week. Forest currently sit 18th in the PL table. The last time these two teams battled was back in 1999; United won the game 8-1! For United, they should believe that they can finish in the top 4 come the end of the season. They are ranked 11th in GPG (1.4) and they are the 7th-best team at home this season. As for Nottingham Forest, they must improve to stay in this league. They are currently ranked 18th in GPG (0.7) and they have the worst away record in the entire league.

My Prediction: 4-0

Leeds VS Manchester City

Leeds ended their first half of the season by losing to Tottenham in a high-scoring contest (4-3). Leeds come into the second part of the season in 15th place. Manchester City played terribly in a 2-1 loss to Brentford in their last league game but they picked up a good 3-2 victory over Liverpool to advance to the Carabao Cup Quarter Finals. City currently sit second in the Premier League, 5 points behind leaders Arsenal. In their last 5 meetings, City have won 3 times compared to Leeds’ 1. City’s three wins have come with a combined aggregate of 15-0. For Leeds, they will be hoping to move up the table in the coming months and they are currently ranked 9th in GPG which helps (1.6). However, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 games. As for City, they will want to end the season as champions so they will have to start going on a big winning run starting now. They have the best attack in the league (2.9 GPG) and Erling Haaland currently sits top of the Golden Boot race with 18 goals. He’ll want to get on the score sheet at least once in this game.

My Prediction: 1-2
