Premier League Preview: Gameweek 13

Linus O'Howell

Leicester City VS Manchester City

Gameweek 13 of the Premier League begins with Leicester City hosting Manchester City at the King Power Stadium. Leicester come into this game on the back of a 4-0 demolition over Wolverhampton Wanderers and they sit 17th in the table due to back-to-back wins. Man City beat Brighton 3-1 last Saturday before they played out a 0-0 draw at Dortmund. City currently sit second knowing a win on Saturday would see them go top of the table before Arsenal play on Sunday. In their last 22 meetings, City have won 13 times whilst Leicester have earnt 5 victories. City won 6-3 in their last meeting, but they usually have to work hard to get a result away to Leicester. For Leicester, they have 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses at home in the league this season and they are also ranked 6th in GPG (1.8). It would be a huge win if they were able to pull it off. As for Man City, they are ranked 1st in GPG (3.3) but they have only won 2 of their 5 away games in the league this season. They’ll be frustrated if they don’t win this one that’s for sure.

My Prediction: 0-1

Bournemouth VS Spurs

After a pretty good start to the season, Bournemouth have lost their last two games. However, their loss away to West Ham on Monday was pretty controversial. They currently sit 14th in the table. Spurs suffered a disappointing home loss against Newcastle last Sunday and on Wednesday, they had a late goal controversially disallowed meaning they drew 1 all with Sporting. Spurs currently sit 3rd in the table. In their last 11 meetings, Spurs have won 72% of their games compared to Bournemouth 9%. Bournemouth’s only win against Spurs in recent memory came in a 1-0 home win at the end of the 2018/19 season. For Bournemouth, they haven’t managed a goal in their last 2 games and only two teams have put the ball in the back of the net less times than the Cherries. They have also conceded the most penalties out of any team in the league this season which isn’t great. As for Spurs, they are the ranked 4th in GPG this season (1.9) and this is a game they should be winning. However, will Antonio Conte rest some of his best players knowing how big their Champions League game against Marseille is on Tuesday.

My Prediction: 0-2

Brentford VS Wolves

Both Brentford and Wolves come into this game off the back of a 4-0 defeat. Brentford suffered theirs at Villa Park whilst Wolves lost at home to Leicester. Brentford currently sit 11th in the table, 5 points ahead of their opponents who currently sit in 19th place. In their last 12 meetings, Wolves have won 6 games compared to Brentford’s 4. Also, these 12 games have taken place in the Premier League, the Championship and League 1. For Brentford, they are ranked 8th in GPG (1.5), but have failed to score in their previous 2 matches. They currently have the 6th best home record. As for Wolves, they are the lowest scorers in the league with an average of 0.4 goals per game! They also have the worst away record in the league and they have failed to win any of their last 7 away games.

My Prediction: 2-0

Brighton VS Chelsea

It didn’t take too long for Graham Potter to return to the AMEX as Brighton and Hove Albion host Chelsea. Brighton lost 3-1 away from home to Manchester City last week and they currently sit 9th in the table. Chelsea conceded very, very late on last week which resulted in a draw at home to Manchester United before they bounced back with a win in Salzburg (1-2). They currently sit 5th in the table. In their last 10 competitive meetings, Chelsea have won 60% of the time and 40% of the time the game has ended in a draw. The last three games have all ended in draws and the only time Brighton ever beat Chelsea was in 1933. For Brighton, they have failed to score in their last 2 home games and they are yet to win under manager Roberto De Zerbi (2D, 3L). As for Chelsea, they are unbeaten in all 9 of their games under Graham Potter and they have the second-best away record in the league this season. Let’s see if they can make it 10.

My Prediction: 0-2

Crystal Palace VS Southampton

Crystal Palace come into this game off the back of a 3-0 thrashing by Everton. They currently sit 13th in the table. Southampton got themselves a pretty good decent point at home to Arsenal last week and they currently sit 16th in the table. In their last 24 meetings, Southampton have won 54% of their encounters compared to Palace’s 33%. Wilfred Zaha scored in both of their meetings last season. For Crystal Palace, they have scored 5 goals in their last 5 games and will be looking for a win to move them into the top 10. As for Southampton, they are on a 3-game unbeaten run and they would love to extend it to 4 and move up the table.

My Prediction: 2-1

Newcastle United VS Aston Villa

Last week, Newcastle pulled out arguably their best win under their owners by going to Tottenham and beating them 2-1. They currently sit in an amazing 4th place. Aston Villa also come into this game off the back of a great win, they thumped Brentford 4-0. In their last 20 meetings, Newcastle have won 8 times compared to Villa’s 4. The last time an away team won this fixture was all the way back in 2013 (AV 1-2 NEW). For Newcastle, they have earnt 13 points in their last 5 Premier League games and they are unbeaten in 10 home games. As for Aston Villa, they have averaged 0.9 GPG (14th best) and are yet to win an away match in the league this season. Let’s see if they can change that this weekend.

My Prediction: 3-1

Fulham VS Everton

Saturday Night Football sees Fulham host Everton at Craven Cottage. Fulham went to Leeds last week and got all 3 points meaning they currently sit 7th in the table, just three points off the top 4. Everton also earnt themselves a good win last week at home to Crystal Palace (3-0) and they sit 12th in the table. In their last 14 meetings, Everton have won 9 times compared to Fulham 3. Everton won this fixture 2-3 last time. For Fulham, they are ranked 5th in GPG (1.8) and they have been awarded the most penalties of any team this season (4). They are also on a 2-game winning streak so they will definitely be aiming to make it 3. As for Everton, they haven’t scored in their last 2 away games so they will need to try and break that duck this weekend.

My Prediction: 3-2

Liverpool VS Leeds

Liverpool suffered a shocking loss away to Nottingham Forest last week, but they bounced back in style this week with a 3-0 win away to Ajax. The Reds currently sit 8th in the Premier League table. Leeds suffered a disappointing loss at home to Fulham last week (2-3) and they currently sit 18th in the table, level on points with the teams below them. In their last 5 meetings, Liverpool have won 4 times and the other game ended in a 1 all draw. In their 2 meetings last season, Liverpool won 9-0 on aggregate. For Liverpool, they are ranked 3rd in GPG (2.0) and they are unbeaten at home in the league this season. This is a game they have to be winning. As for Leeds, they are ranked 12th in GPG (1.2) and they are currently on a 4-game losing streak. They haven’t won a match in 8 and they haven’t won any of their last 7 away games. It’s an incredibly tough time for Leeds United right now.

My Prediction: 4-0

Arsenal VS Nottingham Forest

It’s been one of the toughest weeks Arsenal have had in a while. They dropped points away from home to Southampton last Sunday and yesterday, they lost 2-0 to PSV in Eindhoven. They still sit top though. Nottingham Forest pulled off one of their best results in a long-time last week when they managed to beat Liverpool by a goal to nil. They still sit bottom of the table, but they are within in a win of moving out of the relegation zone. Their last 4 recent meetings have all taken place in cup competitions. Arsenal won both of their meetings in the league cup whilst Forest knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup in both the 2017/18 season and last year's competition. Arsenal won their last league meeting back in 1999 1-0. For Arsenal, they still have an 100% record at home in the league this season and only Manchester City have scored more goals than them in the league so far. As for Nottingham Forest, they have kept 2 clean sheets in a row but have failed to score in all of their last 4 away games. It’s going to be tough to do both of those things this weekend.

My Prediction: 3-1

Manchester United VS West Ham

Casemiro’s 94th minute header meant that United got a big point away to Chelsea last week. Since then, they’ve cruised past Sheriff in the Europa League (3-0) and they sit sixth in the Premier League table. West Ham managed to beat Bournemouth 2-0 last Monday with a bit of help from VAR and last night, they beat Silkeborg 1-0 to guarantee themselves a spot in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League. In their last 30 meetings, Man United have won 17 times whilst the Hammers have only managed 5. West Ham’s last win in the league against United came back in 2019. For Manchester United, they are unbeaten in their last 7 games in all competitions and they have averaged 1.5 goals per game in the league this season. A win here could see them move into the Champions League places depending on what happens elsewhere. As for West Ham United, they are on a 2-game winning streak without conceding a goal and they will look to do that again this weekend. They are currently ranked 14th in GPG (0.9) and have actually earnt more points in their last 5 league games than their opponents (Man U 8-10 West Ham).

My Prediction: 3-3
