NXT The Great American Bash 2024 Week 1 Review

WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships: Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn VS Meta-Four

Credit: ComicBook.com

After Hank and Tank broke into the NXT Performance Center, Week 1 of NXT The Great American Bash 2024 kicked off with Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn putting their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships on the line against Meta-Four! This was actual a good match I thought, I’ve always liked Alba and Isla since they joined forces on NXT in 2023 whilst Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson also have a lot of chemistry together. The crowd were also invested in the action which is very different to when these Titles get defended on the Main Roster, and the only thing that was really missing here was the fact that you knew who the winners were going to be (because WWE have already advertised a Title match for Friday). But yeah, it was decent enough as The Unholy Union ultimately scored the victory before Ethan Page arrived to laugh at Meta-Four, only for Oro Mensah to roll him up again!

NXT Heritage Cup: Tony D’Angelo VS Tavion Heights, Brooks Jensen VS Cedric Alexander, Joe Hendry’s Live Concert

Brooks Jensen overheard a conversation between Shawn Spears and Cedric Alexander which resulted in Brooks challenging Cedric to a match before Hank and Tank interviewed No Quarter Catch Crew and The D’Angelo Family respectively. This was funny! Pete Dunne then had a good explanation video as to why he’s changed his ways and attacked Trick Williams before it was time for Tony D’Angelo to put his NXT Heritage Cup on the line against Tavion Heights (of the NQCC). Round 1 was pretty evenly matched whilst Round 2 took place in the ad break, so it wasn’t until Round 3 where we saw the first fall as Tony D hit Forget About It to go 1-0 up. This is when Wren Sinclair jumped in the ring and massively fired up Tavion, and this worked as he quickly made it 1-1 in the 4th. However, Myles Borne and Wren Sinclair started to distract Charlie Dempsey too much which through Heights off his game and allowed D’Angelo to hit a Spinebuster to complete the victory! This was decent, the stuff with Wren was good, but we need to see better and more credible challengers facing The Don.

After some Social Media clips were shown between Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne, Jazmyn Nyx, Lola Vice, Sol Ruca, and Karmen Petrovic, Brooks Jensen headed to the ring to take on Cedric Alexander. This was a much better showing from Cedric as he didn’t make any mistakes, and he looked more like the competitor he’s definetly capable of being! Brooks is also impressed me recently, and he did well here to put over his character whilst also wrestling strong. In the end, though, Jensen took too many risks and it cost him dear with Alexander eventually hitting Lumbar-Check to score the 3 count as a disappointed Shawn Spears looked on!

Je’Von Evans talked about his love of Professional Wrestling growing up before Ashante “Thee” Adonis was once again being a nuisance backstage. The Rascalz then had this weird Treehouse thing where MSK said they’re going after the NXT Tag Team Titles again before Joe Hendry was in the ring to perform one of his famous Live Concerts! Hendry sang a song about how much Gallus sucks and he also included a funny line about Booker T being the head of his fan club! Joe was then ready to sing his theme song before Gallus arrived and stopped this immediately by beating up Joe Hendry before they laid him out with a guitar shot to the back. Was this as amazing as I’d hoped, no! However, the crowd loved it, Joe Hendry has such a great aura surrounding him, and it gave Gallus nuclear heat which they’ve been lacking!

Jaida Parker VS Kendall Grey, Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne, and Jazmyn Nyx VS Lola Vice, Sol Ruca, and Karmen Petrovic

Hank and Tank were back as they praised Roxanne Perez before they ultimately annoyed her! Ava then did a great job in getting Ethan Page and Oro Mensah to sign the contract for their NXT Championship match backstage (just give her a raise) before it was time for Jaida Parker to go one-on-one with Kendall Grey. Whilst she’s not in a very good group, Jaida Parker is an impressive performer that has a lot of potential to go far in this industry. You’ve then got Kendall Grey who again looked decent here, and that’s a positive sign given she’s so new to this game. There was a weird bit where Myles Borne just showed up so he could get tossed around again, but other than that, this was totally decent and it ended with a victory for Miss Parker!

Ridge Holland told Thea Hail to win the NXT Women’s Championship by any means necessary before Axiom was talking to The LWO about their upcoming WWE Speed Match! This bothered Nathan Frazer, and things only got worse when Axiom agreed to fight MSK for the NXT Tag Team Championships without his partner’s consent! Surely FRAXIOM won’t lose next week, surely? It was then time for some Six-Women Tag Team action as Fallon Henley joined forces with Jacy Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx to take on the trio of Lola Vice, Sol Ruca, and Karmen Petrovic. I enjoyed this match, I thought all six women put on a good showing, and it never felt clunky at any point which is a great thing to see! Fallon and Sol were definetly the two best wrestlers in this contest, but even Jazmyn Nyx looked decent here. There was also the positive of not having a clear and obvious winner, and in the end, it was Fallon Henley who scored the win after hitting her new finisher!

NXT Women’s Championship: Roxanne Perez VS Thea Hail

Credit: Cageside Seats

After Tatum Paxley challenged Kelani Jordan to the NXT Women’s North American Championship and Joe Hendry said he’s going to kick Joe Coffey’s ass next week, it was Main Event time as Roxanne Perez put her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against Thea Hail! Thea Hail is such a great underdog Babyface, she proved it this time last year against Tiffany Stratton, and she proved it again on this show against Roxanne Perez. Speaking of Roxanne Perez, she’s so good at what she does, and the scary thing is she’s only 22! My one issue with this match is it’s felt a little rushed given this should be a pretty massive deal, and with a better and longer build, this could’ve felt like a genuine good time for Perez to lose the belt. Instead, you kind of knew what was going to happen, but you still have to give massive props to Roxy and Thea for really showing out. Eventually though, Hail came just short once again as The Prodigy hit Pop Rox to pick up the win and retain her NXT Women’s Championship! I hope NXT does this match again down the line!
