NXT 2.0 One Year Anniversary Show Review: 13/09

Pretty Deadly VS The Creed Brothers: NXT Tag Team Championship Steel Cage match

The fans voted that Pretty Deadly defended their titles against the Creed Brothers, inside a steel cage! There was a lot of cool spots in this match, particularly when Julius picked up both men, allowing Brutus Creed to hit his crazy cannonball. The Creed’s were definitely on top before Damon Kemp got involved. Whilst Kemp and JC were fighting on the top of the cage, DK managed to handcuff Julius onto the cage meaning he was trapped. Brutus Creed was then in a 2-on-1 situation, but he looked pretty good and even kicked out of Spilt Milk, something nobody has managed to do so far on NXT. In the end though, the numbers advantage was too much and Pretty Deadly destroyed Brutus Creed before hitting a second Spilt Milk to get the victory. This match continued multiple stories that were already going on. This was good.

Grade: B

Lots of Segments, Toxic Attraction

Wes Lee was announced as the man who would face Carmelo Hayes in the main event before Joe Gacy wished him luck. Gacy also said he has other plans for the evening. Then, a really cool video aired showing off the last 12 months of NXT 2.0. This was really cool, put so many different people over. Then Lash Legend took on Fallon Henley. During Henley’s entrance, her, Briggs and Jensen were accompanied by Mason “The Night Howler” Ramirez. This was cool as it shows just how much WWE does stuff for people. The match, however, wasn’t very good. It was incredibly short, and Henley just won. At least the kid was happy.

After Yulisa Leon announced she would be out for 9 months, Sanga and Von Wagner got into a little ultra-cation. Then, Toxic Attraction spoke about how they have run this whole show for the past year. Rose talked about how she is on her way to becoming the longest reigning NXT Women’s Champion in history before Gigi and Jacy announced their intentions to reclaim their NXT Women’s Tag Team titles. At one point, Rose said she beat the two best women that NXT UK has ever seen and then Alba Fyre came out. Fyre coming out and saying she was the greatest UK Women’s Champion would have made perfect sense, but she never once mentioned it which was a bit dumb. Still, Fyre laid out the dominant faction and looks set for a match with Rose down the line.

Quincy Elliot debut, Stacks and D’Angelo VS Grimes and???

Cora Jade cut a pretty decent promo on her past year in NXT, from being the crowd pleaser to now being the face of the Generation of Jade. She also said that she will be the face of the whole company come next year. Wendy Choo was then backstage and took the mick out of Cora before she got into an argument with Lash Legend, who was furious about her loss. Then, Quincy Elliott debuted. Elliott has a completely different character, entrance and move set to anyone else which is a good thing. I also think his character is pretty good for the position that he is in. The thing he needs to work on is his in-ring skills. He squashed a guy named Sean Gallagher but didn’t really show much quality. If he becomes a solid to good in-ring competitor, he could be a big star on this brand.

Grade: C

Cameron Grimes announced that he doesn’t need anyone and will fight alone against The D’Angelo family. Then, Wes Lee was brutally attacked by Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes. It was proper good heel stuff. Then, Cameron Grimes was in the ring to take on Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo and Tony D’Angelo. Cameron Grimes is one of the top stars on the NXT 2.0 brand but even he couldn’t fight in a 2-on-1 situation. Then, Joe Gacy came down to the ring to be Grimes’ partner. Cameron refused to tag him in but when Cameron was thrown into the corner, Gacy tagged himself in and got a bit of a hot tag. In the end, they sort of worked together and Gacy got the win. However, Grimes refused to join the Schism and he paid for it with a three-on-one assault by Gacy and the Dyad. This was all fine.

NXT Championship scene, Lyons and Stark VS James and Grace

JD McDonagh talked about his attack on Bate from last week whilst having a shave. Clearly, he wasn’t invited to Melo’s barbers. Then, Bron Breakker had a sit-down interview with NXT Commentator Vic Joseph and the champ talked about his up and down year, from beating Ciampa, losing to Ziggler and inducting his family into the WWE Hall of Fame. Tyler Bate then cut an interview and said he would love a rematch with Breakker and also brought up the fact that he has some history with JD. It was then announced that Bate will face McDonagh next week where the winner will fight Bron Breakker for the NXT Championship. Strange decision that one of them gets another shot at Bron but maybe their saving their big time matches for big shows.

Nikkita Lyons and Zoey Stark finally got to team up as they took on the Kiana James and Arianna Grace. Stark is a good in-ring competitor. The match was at its best when she was in their using her speed and striking ability. However, that didn’t happen much. Kiana James isn’t very good; her gimmick is pretty rubbish too. I like Arianna Grace, I think she has shown that with time, she could be an important member of the division. Nikkita Lyons ended up winning the match, but she barely did anything that made you think she was the one to take down Mandy Rose. Not much point to this sadly.

Javier Bernal VS Hank Waller, Superstar of the year announced

Malik Blade and Edris Enofe were trying to decide who they should vote for as superstar of the year before they dissed Joe Gacy. The Dyad weren’t happy with this, and the two teams brawled in the parking lot. After NXT UK’s Oro Mensah got a hype package showcasing his talents, the final 4 contenders for superstar of the year were announced. They were Toxic Attraction, Carmelo Hayes, Nikkita Lyons and Bron Breakker. Grayson Waller was there and was pretty disgusted that he wasn’t in there. He even hinted at his intentions to win the NXT Championship off Bron Breakker. That would definitely be one of Breakker’s biggest feuds to date.

Javier Bernal came down to the ring to tale on Hank Walker who has been a security guard for weeks. Wade Barrett awesomely referenced that he is a developmental talent, and they get used to help with security. Walker didn’t have entrance music or gear which was cool. Big Body Javi is very unlikeable, no one really reacted to him, but Hank seems pretty over. He even got the win with a strange looking finisher.

Grade: C

Then, we got a really cool video showcasing the best entrances of the past year. This was really good and really put over Melo as a mega star before the main event. Then, we saw a bunch of congratulations tweets from Butch, Raquel Gonzalez, Johnny Gargano and Finn Balor which was cool to see before Bron Breakker was announced as the NXT 2.0 Superstar of the year. I probably would have put him third, but it does make sense that he won given what he has done this year.

NXT North American Championship match: Carmelo Hayes VS Solo Sikoa!

Carmelo Hayes came down to the ring and talked about his brilliant reign. He said he has beaten people on the show and people from other shows which was a good line. Then, quite shockingly, Solo Sikoa arrived. The fans went crazy as they have loved Sikoa for ages and Melo’s face was brilliant. The one guy the A-Champ hasn’t wanted to fight was there to challenge him. This match was pretty mental, Sikoa was super dominant. After some cool moves, he managed to get the victory comfortable victory with the Uso Splash. On one hand, this is bad. Hayes has been the mega star of NXT 2.0 so him losing like this is not great. On the other hand, it makes total sense why he has avoided him. Also, Solo Sikoa getting his moment is great as he has earnt it. If he turns up on SmackDown holding the North American Championship, that puts himself, the Bloodline and most importantly the brand, in an even bigger spotlight. If he couldn’t beat Gunther, this was Sikoa’s best opportunity for gold. Intrigued to see were this goes next.
