My 2024 Formula 1 Midseason Driver Ratings/Rankings

After 14 Rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 Season, it’s Summer Break time which means I get to do My Midseason Driver Ratings/Rankings! For those of you who are new to this series or forgot how it works, I’ve been grading the drivers from 1-to-10 for every Key Session this Season and I’ve split them into 4 groups; Sprint Qualifying, Sprint, Qualifying, and Race! I then total the points up and divide them by the number of Key Sessions (maximum of 34) to give me an average which is how I work out the Rankings. This is the fairest way to do it as it means recency bias doesn’t play a factor. Also, this is one of my favourite articles of the year and that’s mainly because despite being the one doing the Grades all year, I sometimes surprise myself with certain people’s positions which is always pretty baffling! Oh, and I’m not including Ollie Bearman because he’d be second! Right, with that all out of the way, let’s start with P20!

P20: Logan Sargeant

Credit: F1 Oversteer

I’m not surprised that Logan Sargeant is once again last in my Driver Rankings! I’ve given Logan thirteen 1’s so far this season and not a single 10 which isn’t a great start (it’s also more 1’s than this time last year)! Sargeant’s worst weekends (I’m not including Australia) came when he scored the worst possible total of 2 in Spain whilst his best weekend points-wise was 16 in Miami, but I’d argue his 14 points in Silverstone was actually his best weekend! Like I said last year, Logan probably shouldn’t have kept his seat to begin with, but I do appreciate his consistency with my Averages (like he’s almost exactly the same)!

P19: Zhou Guanyu

Credit: China Sports News

2024 just hasn’t been a good year for Zhou Guanyu so far! Zhou has received twelve 1’s so far this season and no 10’s which isn’t the ideal ratio! Zhou’s worst weekends this year came when he scored 1 point in both Japan and Belgium (not entirely his fault though), but he’s also had plenty of 3’s (out of 20). As for Zhou’s best weekend, he actually scored 25 points at his home Weekend in China which is a nice place to get it! Whilst Kick Sauber haven’t given him a good car, Zhou Guanyu has been really poor in the first 14 Rounds and he really needs to sort it out! However, I will praise Zhou in the fact he’s surprisingly good in Sprints!

P18: Lance Stroll

Credit: F1

I can’t lie, this surprised me a little! Amazingly, whilst I haven’t given Lance Stroll any 10’s, I’ve only given Lance three 1’s which for context, is pretty low for someone who’s ended up on the “loser’s Podium” (even though he’s well clear of the guys behind). Lance’s worst weekend of the year came when he received 4 points in Spain whilst Stroll’s best weekend saw him pick up 15 points in Silverstone! I actually think Lance Stroll has been better this year, I don’t think he’s been helped by Aston Martin’s lack of performance, but it’s also fair to say that he didn’t start the year particually strongly! However, he keeps driving how he is right now in the second half of the year, and his average will definitely go up!

P17: Valtteri Bottas

Credit: RacingNews365

I’m not surprised that Valtteri Bottas ended up here, but I will say that it’s important to look at his average compared to his teammate! Amazingly, I haven’t given Valtteri either a single 1 or 10 so far in 2024, and I think that speaks volumes to the season he’s having! Bottas’ worst weekends came in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Imola where he scored 5 points whilst his best weekend saw him pick up a pretty good 30 points in China! Again, Valtteri Bottas is this low in the Rankings because of the car he has, but when you look at his scores and the fact that he’s absolutely smashing his Kick Sauber teammate, Valtteri’s doing alright this year!

P16: Kevin Magnussen

Credit: F1

Whilst it hasn’t been the best of half-seasons for Kevin Magnussen, his average has gone up (by quite a bit) from this time last year! I’ve given Kevin six 1’s compared to zero 10’s so far in 2024 which is again a better ratio than last year! Magnussen's worst weekend of the season so far came in Monaco where he scored just 5 points whilst his best weekend saw him pick up a massive 31 points in Austria! On paper, Kevin Magnussen’s season doesn’t sound horrendous so far, it’s actually quite funny in the sense that he’s pretty good in the Sprint Format, but in these Rankings, it’s important to compare the averages between teammates and that is a real problem for K-Mag!

P15: Esteban Ocon

Credit: F1

Whilst the car hasn’t helped matters, it still hasn’t been the first half of the 2024 Season that Esteban Ocon was hoping for! Esteban hasn’t received a single 10 from me so far this season, but he’s also only received one 1 (Monaco Race) which isn’t a terrible ratio for a guy down in P15! Ocon’s worst weekends saw him score just 4 points in Bahrain, Britain, and Hungary whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 27 in Austria! However, I’d actually say that his 17 points in Spain was his best weekend! I think the thing that’s hurt Esteban Ocon’s average this year is he was the better Alpine driver when the car was terrible, but since the car’s gotten a bit better, Ocon’s been outperformed by his teammate!

P14: Pierre Gasly

Credit: F1

It just hasn’t been Alpine’s year, but at least Pierre Gasly appears with an “above average” Average. Pierre’s received two 1’s from me this year (both in the season opener), but he has actually received a 10 (Spain Qualifying)! Gasly’s worst weekend (not including Silverstone) obviously came when he scored the lowest possible 2 points in Bahrain whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 27 in Austria. However, just like his teammate, Pierre’s actual best weekend of the year came in Spain where he scored a superb 19 out of 20! If Alpine improve over the Summer Break and Pierre Gasly keeps getting stronger, Gasly will be higher on this list come December! Oh, and Pierre seems to thrive in a Sprint!

P13: Sergio Perez

Credit: PlanetF1

Well, here we go then! Sergio Perez has so far received six 1’s from me in 2024 and not a single 10 which isn’t a great record given he’s in a Red Bull! Checo’s worst weekend of the year points-wise was in Monaco where he scored just the 1, but his worst weekend came in Canada where he scored a horrible 2! In terms of his best weekend, Perez scored 29 points in both China and Miami, but he was also strong to score 17 points in both Saudi and Japan! Well firstly, I’m going to praise Sergio Perez in that he’s pretty good in the Sprints! However, it’s not been a good time for Checo, he’s miles away from his teammate in these Rankings, and his average is a lot worse than even last year which tells you a lot!

P12: Alex Albon

Credit: Autosport

Whilst he hasn’t been as good as last year, it’s still not been a bad first half of the year for Alex Albon. Alex has only received two 1’s from me so far this year (both Sprint Qualifying Sessions), but he’s yet to receive a 10 either. Albon’s worst weekend so far came in Spain where he received just 4 points whilst his best weekends saw him pick up 18 points at both Monaco and Silverstone! Interestingly, Alex Albon’s been pretty shocking in the Sprint Format (especially Sprint Quali), but his Qualifying and Race performances have been a lot better! Let’s see how the second half of 2024 goes for young Alex!

P11: Fernando Alonso

Credit: PlanetF1

After being second at this stage last year, Fernando Alonso drops outside the Top 10 in my Driver Rankings! Fernando’s received two 10’s from me in the first 14 Weekends, but he’s also picked up five 1’s which is actually a big deal in comparison to his teammate! Alonso’s worst weekend of the year easily came in Imola where he scored the lowest possible total of 2 whilst his best weekend points-wise was 30 in China. However, I’d say 19 points in Saudi Arabia was the better result! The thing with Fernando Alonso is he started the season quite well, but as Aston Martin have dropped off, so has he! Now, I’ve joked for a while that Fernando isn’t great at Sprints, but he’s actually even worse than I thought (remember his teammate was P19 in that category).

P10: Daniel Ricciardo

Credit: F1

Whilst this initially surprised me, a Top 10 appearance for Daniel Ricciardo isn’t actually that surprising when you start to look deeper at his season as a whole. Daniel’s received two 1’s from me so far this year, but he’s also picked up four 10’s which is the best amount so far! Danny Ric’s worst weekends so far have seen him score 6 points in Saudi, Australia, and Spain whilst Ricciardo’s best weekend saw him score a Perfect 20 in Canada! Another thing I took away from Daniel Ricciardo’s first half of the year is he’s amazing in the Sprint Format so that’s worth remembering in the future!

P9: Yuki Tsunoda

Credit: Visa Cash App RB

On the basis of this, it’s not surprising that Yuki Tsunoda feels he deserves a spot at Red Bull going forward! Yuki’s received four 1’s so far this season, but he’s managed to pick up a pretty good five 10’s (which is more than he got in the entirety of 2022 and 2023 combined)! Tsunoda’s worst weekend of the season so far came in Spain and Belgium where he scored just the 3 points whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 30 in Miami! However, it’s also worth mentioning that Yuki got a Perfect 20 in Australia! I think the thing that hurts Yuki Tsunoda a little in these Rankings is he’s struggled a lot in Sprint Quali and his performance has also dropped off a little bit in the last few rounds. However, Yuki’s still outperformed his Visa Cash App RB teammate so far in 2024, and he fully merits a place in the Top 10!

P8: Lewis Hamilton

Credit: Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team

Whilst it’s gotten better over the last few weekends, the first half of 2024 still hasn’t been ideal for Sir Lewis Hamilton. Amazingly, Lewis has received both two 1’s and two 10’s which is interesting to me! Hamilton’s worst weekend of 2024 so far came in Australia where he scored “just” the 8 points whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 26 in Austria. However, as you’d expect, Lewis’ 19 points in Silverstone was his best weekend so far! I think this shows that Lewis Hamilton really started the season on a bad note because he’s been superb recently, but he was almost too far behind after the earlier rounds. However, if Lewis can keep this run of form going, he’ll probably end up higher on this list come December!

P7: Nico Hulkenberg

Credit: PlanetF1

Take a bow Nico Hulkenberg! Nico has received three 1’s from me in the first half of the year, but he’s also picked up four 10’s which is pretty good! Hulkenberg’s worst weekend so far actually came last time out in Belgium (where he scored just the 4 points) whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score a massive 34 points in Miami! However, it’s also worth mentioning that The Hulk got a perfect 20 in Britain! I’ve always said with my Rankings that it’s a lot harder for drivers in slower cars to be super high up because they just don’t get the same opportunities as the front runners. However, Nico Hulkenberg has smashed that so far in 2024, and he’s also absolutely destroyed his teammate!

P6: George Russell

Credit: FIA

I’ll be honest, I expected George Russell to be higher than P6! George has only received one 1 so far this season (Australia Race) compared to four 10’s which is pretty good going! Russell’s worst weekend of the season so far came in Australia where he scored 7 points whilst his best weekend of the year so far saw him score a massive 35 points in Austria! I think George Russell’s been pretty impressive so far in 2024 and that’s why his average is a lot higher than his teammate! I think you have to remember that Mercedes didn’t start the year particually well which hurts George’s overall average, and I guess my only criticism of Russell is he needs to work on his Sprint performances (because he’s been really good everywhere else).

P5: Carlos Sainz

Credit: F1

There is something very fitting about Carlos Sainz being P5 in my Midseason Driver Rankings with a 7.00 Average! Carlos has only received two 10’s from me so far this year compared to just the one 1 (Canada Race), but he has picked up a pretty healthy thirteen 7’s! Sainz’s worst weekend of the year so far came in Canada where he scored just the 3 points whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him pick up 31 in Austria. However, Carlos’ actual best weekend so far came when he scored a Perfect 20 in Australia (after having his appendix removed literally two weeks before)! Carlos Sainz has been really good in the first half of the year, his consistency has been his biggest strength, and Carlos has been especially good in Sprint Qualifying!

P4: Oscar Piastri

Credit: McLaren

Considering he was P12 at this stage last year, I’d say Oscar Piastri’s come a long way with McLaren! Oscar hasn’t received a single 1 so far in 2024 compared to four 10’s which is a pretty good ratio! Piastri’s worst weekend of 2024 so far came in Spain where he scored “just” the 8 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Austria where he scored 34. However, Oscar’s 19 points in Hungary was probably his best showing! I mean Oscar Piastri has been superb so far in 2024, his consistency in my Rankings is so impressive, and the scary thing for the opposition is the young Aussie’s only getting quicker and quicker and quicker!

P3: Charles Leclerc

Credit: Qatar Tribune

This is the 5th time I’ve done one of these Driver Ratings/Rankings articles, and it’s the 4th time that Charles Leclerc has appeared in the Top 3! So far in 2024, Charles has received seven 10’s and not a single 1 which is a great record! Leclerc’s worst weekend of the year so far came in both Canada and Britain as he received just 6 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Miami where he scored a near-perfect 39! However, it’s also worth mentioning that Charles got a Perfect 20 in Monaco! Charles Leclerc has struggled a little bit in Sprint Quali this year, but he’s very much made up for it in the Sprint’s themselves! Charles is a super quick driver, you can’t take that away from him, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can hold on to a spot on the Podium come the end of the year!

P2: Lando Norris

Credit: Yahoo News UK

The first half of 2024 has definitely been Lando Norris’ strongest in Formula 1 to date! Lando hasn’t received a single 1 from me so far in 2024, but he has received a massive ten 10’s which is pretty good going! Norris’ worst weekends of the year so far came in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia where he scored 11 points (that’s genuinely his lowest total) whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 33 in China! However, Lando has also received 19 points in Australia, Imola, Canada, and Spain. There’s no denying that Lando Norris has been impressive so far this season, he’s very quick, and you know he’ll most likely end the weekend on (or around) the Podium. There are things that Norris needs to work on, for example, his Sprints or his Race starts. However, P2 at this stage is still a mega achievement, and that’s coming from a Lando Hater (wink wink)!

P1: Max Verstappen

Credit: Red Bull

Whilst not as dominant as 2023, there’s no denying the fact that Max Verstappen is still the class of the field! Max has received a 1 this year (Austria Race), but he’s also received twenty-two 10’s which is just insane (it’s also the same amount as what he had this time last year). Verstappen’s worst weekend of the year so far saw him score “only” 11 points in Monaco whilst his best weekend of the year point-wise saw him score 39 in Miami! However, Max has also achieved five Perfect 20’s (Bahrain, Saudi, Japan, Imola, and Canada). It’s almost unfair how good Max Verstappen is, like he’s simply on another level (and maybe more) than everyone else! However, Max has received a 1 this year which is the first time that’s happened (I started in 2022) so he’s clearly washed!
