My 2024 Formula 1 Driver Ratings/Rankings

Updated: 16 minutes ago

With the 2024 Formula 1 Season now over, it’s that time of the year when I reveal my Driver Ratings/Rankings from what has been a pretty wild year! For those who don’t know how this works, I have been giving out grades from 1-to-10 for every Key Session that I have reviewed in 2024, and what I’ve done is I’ve added up all of the totals and divided by the amount of sessions each driver has competed in (maximum of 60) to get an overall Average for the year! It’s also worth mentioning that I’ve also split the points into a bunch of different categories so you can get an idea of who’s great in a Sprint, Qualifying, or maybe not so good in a Race! I also did this in the Summer Break too so I will be referring to that, and finally, for the first time ever, I got some of your lot’s input to help me compare from what you and I think (which I think is a pretty cool new addition)! So, let’s get started with P22 (Oliver Bearman and Jack Doohan aren’t included)!

Credit: F1

P22: Logan Sargeant

Credit: The SportsRush

For the second-straight year, Logan Sargeant ends up P22 and last in my Driver Rankings! I’ve given Logan fourteen 1’s in 2024 whilst I didn’t give him a single 10 which honestly isn’t a great start! Sargeant’s worst weekend of the season (not including Australia) came in Spain where he scored the lowest possible score of 2 whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Miami where he scored 16! However, I’d say 14 points in Silverstone was actually his best weekend of the year! When it comes to you guys, you also had Logan last in your Rankings, but with an Average Rating of 2.25! I mean, nothing has really changed with Logan Sargeant as he got dropped literally 1 Race after the Summer Break, but it sums up what has been a pretty terrible Formula 1 career (but hey, at least he was consistent in my Averages)!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 7 (P22)

Total Sprint Points: 13 (P22)

Total Qualifying Points: 33 (P20)

Total Race Points: 33 (P21)

Overall Total: 86 (P22)

Average: 2.53

P21: Zhou Guanyu

Credit: F1

Zhou Guanyu’s last year in Formula 1 ended up being his worst! I’ve given Zhou twenty 1’s this season which is a lot compared to just the one 1 (Qatar Race)! Zhou’s worst weekend of the season came in Zandvoort where he scored the lowest possible total of 2 whilst his best weekend came at home when he scored 25 points over the Chinese Grand Prix Weekend! When it comes to you guys, you actually had Zhou “up” in P19 with an Average of 4.25 which honestly stunned me! Unfortunately for Zhou Guanyu, despite his Average going ever-so-slightly up from my Midseason Article, this year has not been good enough, and this is most likely the last time that Zhou will ever appear in one of these!

Total Sprint Points: 24 (P16)

Total Qualifying Points: 55 (P19)

Total Race Points: 85 (P19)

Overall Total: 180 (P19)

Average: 3.10

P20: Lance Stroll

Credit: PlanetF1

There’s no real change for Lance Stroll from my Midseason Driver Ranking as the Canadian remains in the Botton 3! I haven’t given Lance a single 10 in 2024, but I have given him eight 1’s which isn’t the best ratio! Stroll’s worst weekends of the season came in Spain, Monza, and Singapore where he scored just 4 points whilst his best weekend came when he picked up 15 points in Silverstone! When it comes to you guys, you also had Lance in P20 with an Average of 3.88, but I will say that putting him behind Zhou Guanyu seems very harsh! Unfortunately for Lance Stroll, he wasn’t very good in any of the different formats, and him scoring zero points since the Summer Break has seen his Average fall quite a way!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 21 (P16)

Total Sprint Points: 18 (P18)

Total Qualifying Points: 78 (P18)

Total Race Points: 92 (P17)

Overall Total: 209 (P18)

Average: 3.60

P19: Valtteri Bottas

Credit: Forbes

Despite a very successful Formula 1 career, Valtteri Bottas’ final year in the sport did not go to plan! Valtteri only received two 1’s throughout the 2024 Season, but he did manage a 10 in Abu Dhabi Qualifying! Bottas’ worst weekend of the year came in Las Vegas where he scored just the 3 points whilst his best weekends came when he scored 30 points in both China and Qatar! When it comes to you guys, you had Valtteri slightly higher up in P17 with an Average of 4.63! I’d say what let Valtteri Bottas’ Average down was his Race results, but it’s not exactly been his fault because Kick Sauber have been poor! I will say though that Valtteri is miles clear of his teammate Zhou Guanyu, so he deserves praise for that!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 29 (P12)

Total Sprint Points: 27 (P14)

Total Qualifying Points: 109 (P13)

Total Race Points: 92 (P16)

Overall Total: 257 (P16)

Average: 4.28

P18: Franco Colapinto

Credit: F1-Mexico

A driver I didn’t expect to write about after the Midseason Article, Franco Colapinto certainly made his mark in his short stint in Formula 1! Franco received four 1’s in his 9 Races, but he did receive a 10 after scoring points in Azerbaijan! Colapinto’s worst weekend points-wise came in Abu Dhabi where he only received 2 (he wasn’t graded for the Race though) whilst his best weekend came in Baku where he scored a massive 19 out of 20! When it comes to you guys, you definitely rated Franco higher than me as he lined up P15 with a 5.00 Average! I do think things dropped off towards the end for Franco Colapinto, pretty much as soon as everyone said he should go to Red Bull! However, Franco still did a better job than people expected, and a much better job than the driver he replaced so it was definitely worth it!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 12 (P21)

Total Sprint Points: 14 (P21)

Total Qualifying Points: 28 (P22)

Total Race Points: 44 (P20)

Overall Total: 98 (P21)

Average: 4.45

P17: Sergio Perez

Credit: Motor Sport Magazine

If this is to be the end of Sergio Perez in Formula 1, it’s certainly been a rather depressing one! Sergio has received a massive twelve 1’s from me in 2024 compared to not a single 10 which is pretty awful! Perez’s worst weekends of the year came when he received the lowest possible score of 2 in Canada and Mexico City whilst his best weekend saw him score 29 points in both China and Miami! When it comes to you guys, you did not hold back as you had Checo all the way down in P21 with an Average of 2.75! Crazy (but I mean that more about Sergio than I do you lot)! To be fair to Sergio Perez, he didn’t do too bad in the Sprints, but other than that, it’s been a very poor and underwhelming season from the Mexican, and I think it’s time for Checo to go, at least from Red Bull anyway!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 25 (P14)

Total Sprint Points: 32 (P10)

Total Qualifying Points: 106 (P14)

Total Race Points: 104 (P14)

Overall Total: 267 (P15)

Average: 4.60

P16: Esteban Ocon

Credit: F1 Oversteer

Whilst Sao Paulo was pretty sensational, Esteban Ocon’s position in my Driver Rankings is anything but! Esteban has received five 1’s from me in 2024, but he did pick up two 10’s which is at least something! Ocon’s worst weekends of the season came when he scored 4 points in Bahrain, Britain, Hungary, and Azerbaijan whilst his best weekend of the year came when he scored 27 points in both Austria and Sao Paulo! When it comes to you guys, you had Esteban higher than me, up in P13 with an Average of 5.13! Sao Paulo will of course be the thing that people remember the most about Esteban Ocon in 2024, he was sensational that day (in both Qualifying and the Race), and he deserves a lot of praise for that! However, the year as a whole just hasn’t been what you would expect from Esteban, and he really needs to bounce back in a strong way at Haas next year!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 29 (P11)

Total Sprint Points: 30 (P12)

Total Qualifying Points: 102 (P15)

Total Race Points: 106 (P13)

Overall Total: 267 (P14)

Average: 4.68

P15: Kevin Magnussen

Credit: PlanetF1

After a much better second half of the year, Kevin Magnussen’s Average has shot up from my Midseason Article! Kevin received six 1’s from me in 2024 (all in the first half of the season) whilst he managed to pick up three 10’s in the final part of the year! Magnussen’s worst weekend of the season came in Monaco where he scored just the 5 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came in COTA where he scored a massive 35 points! However, it’s worth mentioning that K-Mag scored a Perfect 20 in Mexico City! When it comes to you guys, you have K-Mag a lot higher than me with a 6.25 Average putting him all the way up in P11! The thing with Kevin Magnussen is that if he’d driven how he’s driven in recent times throughout the entire season, he wouldn’t have lost his seat! It’s a shame in that sense, but at least Kevin ended it on somewhat of a high! Also, it’s worth mentioning that K-Mag was great in the Sprint Format, but his Qualifying results let him down!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 32 (P9)

Total Sprint Points: 36 (P9)

Total Qualifying Points: 96 (P16)

Total Race Points: 111 (P12)

Overall Total: 275 (P13)

Average: 5.09

P14: Alex Albon

Credit: Total Motorsport

Amazingly, Alex Albon’s Average only changed by 0.02 from my Midseason Rankings! Alex received four 1’s from me this year compared to two 10’s which isn’t the worst ratio for someone who’s down in P14! Albon’s worst weekend of the year came in Spain where he scored just 4 points whilst his best weekend of the season came in Azerbaijan where he scored a mega 19! When it comes to you guys, you have Albon slightly higher than me, up in P12 with a 5.63 Average! The thing that really let Alex Albon down this year was his Sprint Qualifying performances, and I find that fascinating as his best performances came in normal Qualifying! Still, Alex was comfortably clear of both of his teammates so in that sense, he did a good job!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 20 (P18)

Total Qualifying Points: 140 (P10)

P13: Daniel Ricciardo

Credit: Motorsport Week

When you look at these Rankings, it does kind of make sense why Red Bull decided to drop Daniel Ricciardo after Singapore! Daniel received two 1’s from me in 2024, but he did actually receive four 10’s which is definitely the best so far! Ricciardo’s worst weekends of the year saw him score 6 points in Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Spain whilst his best weekend came when he scored a Perfect 20 in Canada! When it comes to you guys, you were much harsher on Danny Ric as you had him all the way down in P18 with a 4.38 Average! Now, Daniel Ricciardo’s Average and position dropped from my Midseason Article, and like I said, when you consider that I haven’t talked about the other Visa Cash App RB drivers yet, it kind of gets rid of any doubt as to whether Red Bull were right to get rid of The Honey Badger!

P12: Fernando Alonso

Credit: Motor Sport Magazine

By just 0.01 of an Average, Fernando Alonso finds himself in P12! Fernando has received two 10’s from me this season, but he has also received eight 1’s which is amazingly the same as his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll! Alonso’s worst weekend of the year came in Imola where he received the lowest possible total of 2 whilst his best weekend points-wise was 30 in China! However, a 19-out-of-20 in Saudi Arabia was the 2-time World Champions overall best! When it comes to you guys, you had Fernando lower than me, down in P14 with a 5.13 Average! The thing that’s interesting with Fernando Alonso is his Sprints were horrendous, in fact, he was the worst driver that competed in every Sprint Race, but Fernando was strong in both Qualifying and the Grand Prix’s, and he’s absolutely destroyed his teammate overall, so I don’t think Alonso’s done too bad!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 28 (P13)

P11: Lewis Hamilton

Credit: F1 Chronicle

Lewis Hamilton’s final year at Mercedes did not go to plan hence why he find himself outside of my Top 10! I’ve given Lewis four 10’s in 2024, but five 1’s which isn’t a particularly great ratio! Hamilton’s worst weekends of the year came when he scored “just” 8 points in Australia, Zandvoort, and Baku whilst his best weekend points-wise was 26 in Austria! However, I did give the 7-time World Champion a score of 19 in Silverstone! When it comes to you guys, you’ve gone slightly higher with Lewis, putting him P10 with a 6.25 Average! It’s just not been a great year for Lewis Hamilton, he had some amazing highs, but he just hasn’t impressed me this year, and he needs to at Ferrari!

P10: Liam Lawson

Credit: Motorsport Week

To my surprise, Liam Lawson finds his way into my Top 10! Liam picked up two 10’s from me compared to not a single 1 in his 6 Race Weekends in 2024 which is pretty damn good going if you ask me! Lawson’s worst weekend came in Las Vegas where he scored just the 5 points whilst his best weekend saw him score a massive 36 points in Sao Paulo! When it comes to you guys, you have Liam much lower down in P16 with a 5.00 Average (which interestingly is exactly the same as what you had for Franco Colapinto)! I often surprise myself at some point during these Rankings, and Liam Lawson is probably the one who’s done that this year! However, it’s not fully undeserved as Liam’s Sprint Qualifying performances have been terrific, but it’s interesting to note that he ended up second out of the 3 Visa Cash App RB drivers!

P9: Yuki Tsunoda

Credit: Sports Illustrated

For the first time ever, Yuki Tsunoda ends the season as one of my 10 Best! Yuki has received five 1’s in 2024, but he has also achieved seven 10’s which is more than he got in both 2022 and 2023 combined! Tsunoda’s worst weekends of the season came in Spain and Belgium where he scored just 3 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Miami where he scored 30! However, it’s worth mentioning that the Japanese driver did receive a Perfect 20 in Australia! When it comes to you guys, you agree with me in having Yuki in P9, but with a higher Average of 6.63! In particular, Yuki Tsunoda’s Qualifying performances this year have been terrific, and all of this points to Yuki deserving a spot at the top team!

P8: Pierre Gasly

Credit: Sports Auto Moto

A terrific second half of the season sees Pierre Gasly’s Average rise by a whole 1 as The Gasman rises from 14th to 8th! Pierre has received three 1’s from me in 2024 compared to ten 10’s which is pretty terrific going (with 9 of them coming since the Summer Break)! Gasly’s worst weekend of the year came in the Season Opener in Bahrain where he scored the lowest possible total of 2 whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Qatar when he scored a massive 36 out of 40! However, Gasly did also score a Perfect 20 in Abu Dhabi which is actually quite fitting! When it comes to you guys, you actually have Pierre one place higher than me in P7 with an exact 7.00 Average! Firstly, Pierre Gasly’s second half of this year has been terrific! He has comprehensively beaten his Alpine teammate, he’s been superb in the Sprint Format, and a second-straight year in my Top 10 is fully merited!

P7: Nico Hulkenberg

Credit: Top Gear

Well done Nico Hulkenberg! Nico has received seven 1’s from me this year, which is a little high, but he has also received ten 10’s which is pretty good! Hulkenberg’s worst weekend of the year came in Belgium where he picked up just 4 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came when he received a massive 35 at COTA! However, The Hulk did also achieve a Perfect 20 at Silverstone! When it comes to you guys, whilst you gave Nico a higher Average (6.88), he actually places one spot lower in P8! In the end, though, this has been a sensational year for Nico Hulkenberg! Nico places inside the Top 8 in all of my categories, he’s miles clear of his teammate, and he’s comfortably the best of the rest! So once again, well done to The Hulk!

P6: Oscar Piastri

Credit: PlanetF1

Despite dropping 2 places from my Midseason Rankings, 2024 has still been a positive year for Oscar Piastri! Oscar only received two 1’s from me this season compared to eight 10’s which is a pretty good ratio! Piastri’s worst weekend of the year saw him score “just” 7 points in Mexico City whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Austria where he scored 34! However, I’d say the 19 points he picked up in Hungary, Monza, and Baku were more impressive! When it comes to you guys, you had Oscar a lot higher than me, up in P4 with an 8.13 Average! I do feel like Oscar Piastri’s end to the season let him down slightly, I mean it literally cost him two places in these Rankings (you’ll see what I mean soon), but it’s still been a great year, his win in Azerbaijan was sensational, he was on my Sprint Podium for the second straight year, and his Average has risen by nearly a whole 1 from his Rookie Season, so that’s a really good step from the young Aussie!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 40 (P6)

Total Sprint Points: 45 (P3)

P5: George Russell

Credit: F1

A brilliant rise in the second half of the year sees George Russell fully merit a Top 5 finish! George has only received one 1 from me in 2024 (Australia Race) compared to nine 10’s which is really good going! Russell’s worst weekend of the year came in Australia where he scored a total of 7 points whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him pick up 35 points in Austria! However, it’s worth mentioning that the Mercedes driver did receive a Perfect 20 in Vegas! When it comes to you guys, your 7.25 Average sees him one place lower than me in P6! George Russell appeared in my Top 5 drivers at the end of 2022, but this season felt better! George was absolutely sensational in Qualifying (he ended up on my Podium), he massively outperformed his World Championship-winning teammate, and he’s actually very unlucky to miss out on P4 (his Sprints kind of cost him)!

Total Sprint Qualifying Points: 41 (P4)

Total Sprint Points: 38 (P8)

P4: Carlos Sainz

Credit: F1

Just like every year, Carlos Sainz appears in my Top 5! Carlos has received just the two 1’s this year compared to seven 10’s which is pretty good going, and he’s also received eighteen 7’s which I think is quite fun! Sainz’s worst weekend of the year came in Canada where he scored only 3 points whilst his best weekend points-wise was 35 in COTA! However, it’s worth mentioning that the Spaniard received Perfect 20’s in both Australia and Mexico City! When it comes to you guys, you had Carlos in 5th with a 7.88 Average, so slightly different from me! Carlos Sainz is one of the best drivers in the world, he’s consistently up there, his Sprint Format performances were particularly strong, and for him to win in Australia after literally having surgery two weeks before is just extraordinary! Whilst it will be hard for Carlos to be here next year given he’s moving to Williams, it’s been an absolute pleasure to write about Sainz’s career at Ferrari!

P3: Charles Leclerc

Credit: F1

Just like every year (since I’ve started doing these Driver Rankings), Charles Leclerc ends up on the Podium! Charles has received twelve 10’s in 2024, and amazingly, he hasn’t received a single 1 which has only happened twice before (both by Max Verstappen)! Leclerc’s worst weekend of the year came in Canada and Silverstone where I only gave him 6 points whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Miami where he scored a ridiculous 39! However, it’s also worth mentioning that the Monegasque did receive a Perfect 20 in Monaco! When it comes to you guys, you also had Charles in P3, but with a very high 8.50 Average! Charles Leclerc has had a great season, he’s been very consistent throughout, and he fully merits a place on my Podium (yet again)! He also made my Sprint Podium, but most impressively of all, despite all this talk about Charles being a sensational Qualifier, he was actually the driver that I gave out the most points to on Race Day, so that’s pretty cool!

P2: Lando Norris

Credit: Sky Sports

After his best season in the sport, Lando Norris ends up 2nd in my 2024 Driver Rankings! Lando is another driver this season to go without receiving a single 1 from me (which is really impressive), but he’s also managed to come away with twenty-one 10’s which is absolutely insane! Norris’ worst weekend of the year came in Azerbaijan where he scored 10 points (yes, 10 points) whilst his best weekend points-wise came in Qatar where he received 35 points! However, it’s worth mentioning that McLaren’s Number 4 received three Perfect 10’s in Zandvoort, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi! When it comes to you guys, you also had Lando second (with an 8.75 Average) so maybe I’m not as harsh as what you lot think (wink, wink)! Ultimately, Lando Norris has been superb this year! He wasn’t good enough to win the World Championship, but I don’t think that should subtract from what Lando has achieved this season because he really stepped up 1, maybe 2 gears! Now it’s about finding those extra couple of gears if Norris wants to be P1 next year!

P1: Max Verstappen

Credit: Red Bull

It’s 3-out-of-3 for Max Verstappen as the reigning World Champion once again ends up as my Driver of the Season! For the first time ever, Max did receive a 1 from me this year (Austria Race), but he did also receive twenty-seven 10’s which is pretty nice! Verstappen’s worst weekends of the year came in Monaco, Monza, and Baku where he “only” scored 11 points whilst his best weekend points-wise saw him score 39 in Miami! However, the Dutchman did manage to achieve five Perfect 20’s in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Imola, and Canada which is pretty crazy considering they all happened in the first 9 weekends of the year! When it comes to you guys, you also had Max in P1 with a sensational 9.38 Average! Max Verstappen is just HIM, I don’t really think there’s an awful lot of superlatives left for the 4-time World Champion! Max is always on it, and even though his car has let him down this year, he’s still comfortably the Number 1! Also, Verstappen’s Average this year is exactly the same as what he got in 2022, and given that car was a lot more competitive, I’d say that says a lot about Max’s year!
