Mexico City Grand Prix Race Review

Record Breaker!

Max Verstappen now holds the record for the most wins in a single season. After his dominant win in Mexico City yesterday, he has now won 14 races this season. Verstappen won the race by 15 seconds over Lewis Hamilton and then the home hero Sergio Perez.

The Biggest Talking Points

The biggest talking point in this race is that there isn’t much to talk about. Mercedes arguably went on the wrong tyre, particularly with George who should have gone long on the mediums to put the softs on at the end. Ferrari were absolutely nowhere in this race; it was basically a practice race for the team. Alpine’s Fernando Alonso had another technical problem which saw him DNF after looking comfortable for P7 and Valtteri Bottas finally scored a point. Overall, it was a really dull race.

The Standout Drives in the Race

I only handed out two 10’s for the Mexico City Grand Prix. The first one was once again Max Verstappen. As soon as he stayed in the lead through Turn 1, I expected him to win and he did. Another dominant day for the 2-time Champ. And then, for the first time all year, I gave a 10 to Daniel Ricciardo. He was brilliant yesterday and the only guy that brought any entertainment to yesterday’s race. At one point in the race, he collided with Yuki Tsunoda and he ended up receiving a 10 second time penalty for the incident. This seemed pretty ridiculous. I’m not even 100% sure if he should have been given a penalty given the fact that just a few laps later, Zhou and Vettel went through the exact same corner with no problems. If it is a penalty, it certainly isn’t 10 seconds. Anyway, this clearly fired him up and he managed to go from outside the points to P7. Even with the penalty, he still finished P7 which is ridiculous. I think we need to be giving this guy time penalties before the start of the race if this is how he is going to perform. Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and the two Alpine drivers all had pretty good races too.

Drivers who had a Horror Race

I gave two drivers a rating of 1. The first person is Kevin Magnussen. Haas were horrendous this weekend and K-Mag came home in P17. A worrying day for the whole team. For the 16th time this season, Nicholas Latifi receives a 1. He came home last on track and he was the only driver to get lapped twice. Pretty bad (in F1 terms). Mick Schumacher was the other driver who had a pretty poor day.
