2024 Spanish Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Is this Carlos Sainz’s Last Chance to Win at Home?

With the Spanish Grand Prix taking place this weekend, a lot of focus will be on the home hero Carlos Sainz who will be looking to deliver a famous win around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Carlos has an interesting record at home, as whilst he’s always finished in the points in the Grand Prix, he’s actually never managed to appear on the Podium. But a bigger question I think is more important is the fact that given Sainz is going to be leaving Ferrari at the end of the year to a lesser team, is this realistically Carlos’ last chance at winning his home Grand Prix? I guess only time will tell on that, but Carlos Sainz has to be aiming for at least a Podium this weekend, if not more!

Will Ferrari Bounce Back After a Dismal Canada?

Speaking of Ferrari, we have to talk about how abysmal their Canadian Grand Prix weekend was! Not only did both cars get knocked out in Q2, but Charles Leclerc had engine issues during the Race before going onto a rather stupid strategy whilst Carlos Sainz spun on his own and wiped out Alex Albon! In the end, Ferrari suffered a double DNF and it’s really hurt them and their momentum when it comes to the Constructors’ Championship fight. I’d say it’s now very important for the Scuderia to bounce back in a strong way this weekend!

Can Mercedes Score Another Podium Finish This Weekend?

After being pretty average for the start of the year, Mercedes really picked it up in Canada as George Russell delivered a Pole Position and then a Podium finish whilst Lewis Hamilton managed to come home 4th, despite him saying he had a terrible Race! It’s also worth mentioning that Mercedes have an amazing track record at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, winning 7 out of the 8 Races during their dominant era whilst George has finished on the Podium in Spain in each of the last two seasons! So, Merc might genuinely have a chance this weekend!

Can Daniel Ricciardo Build on a Strong Canadian Weekend?

After a tough start to the year which only saw Daniel Ricciardo score points in the Miami Sprint, Danny Ric turned up in Canada and delivered a super strong weekend which ultimately earnt him 4 points for Visa Cash App RB! It was also a big deal as it came following a week of harsh criticism, and both Sergio Perez and Yuki Tsunoda signing contract extensions in the Red Bull Family. It’s now important for Daniel to keep his form up and make sure it isn’t just a 1-time thing.

Fernando Alonso's Home!

The great thing about the Spanish Grand Prix is there’s more than 1 home driver, and we couldn’t do a Preview for the weekend without talking about the King of Spain, Fernando Alonso! Fernando’s had a mixed start to the year all things considered, with some strong performances here and there, but also some poor Qualifying outings too. It doesn’t help that Aston Martin have been underwhelming, but the Silverstone-based team at least has a bit of moment on their side after a strong home Race last time out. As for Alonso, he’s hoping to continue to climb up the ranks at a track he has a lot of history on!
