2024 Mexico City Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Could this be Sergio Perez’s Last Chance to Win at Home?

2024 has not been the year that Sergio Perez would’ve been hoping for, he currently sits 8th in the World Drivers’ Championship, some 204 points behind his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen! However, it’s Mexico City weekend which means it’s time for a little Checo Frenzy! Sergio has a good track record when it comes to his Home Race, he’s been on the Podium twice (both P3’s), and he’s also scored points on nearly every visit. However, last year didn’t exactly go to plan for Perez as a first-lap collision saw him out of the Race almost immediately! There’s also a lot of noise as to whether Checo Perez is even going to be at Red Bull or even on the Grid next season, so if he wants to win at home, this might well be his last chance!

Can Ferrari Deliver Again?

Last weekend at COTA was a pretty special one for Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc leading a 1-2 on a weekend where Carlos Sainz finished second twice! Now, Charles has been very open about Ferrari's ambition to go and win this year’s Constructors’ World Championship, but in order to do that, the Scuderia really need another 40-odd points again this weekend! The only problem for Ferrari is they don’t have the best recent record around the Circuit Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with the team picking up just the 1 Podium finish this decade! Still, if Ferrari show the same kind of pace they did last weekend, expect Sainz and Leclerc to be right at the front again!

Can Max Verstappen Once Again Win in Maxico?

Yes, you did read that right, I will definetly refer to this weekend as the “Maxico City Grand Prix” at least once or twice! However, there’s a good reason for it as Max Verstappen is some what of a specialist around here! In his 8 visits to Mexico City, Max has scored points every time, winning 5 Races, and the only one he hasn’t won since 2016 came when he picked up an opening lap puncture in 2019 (he still recovered to finish 6th)! The thing with Verstappen is due to him having a 57-point lead over Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Standings, he probably only needs 1 more win to really put this Championship on ice, and Max will definetly have a great chance this weekend!

We Need to Talk About Alex Albon!

There’s no doubt that Alex Albon is a likeable driver, he’s easily marketable, and he has talent. However, there’s always been a limit to how much we could rate Alex due to the teammates he had, and we thought we’d find out our answer to his level next season when Carlos Sainz joined the team. However, Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant after Zandvoort, and since then, Colapinto has been flying! Don’t get me wrong, Albon’s been doing decently well since the Summer Break, but compared to Franco, it’s a bit of a concern! What Alex really needs this weekend is points whilst his teammate is down the order!

400 Grand Prix’s for Fernando Alonso!

When you consider Alex Albon had his 100th Grand Prix start last week, it’s pretty insane that this weekend marks Fernando Alonso’s 400th in the sport! Fernando made his debut back in 2001, and since then, he’s gone on to drive for teams like Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and currently Aston Martin! Alonso is a 2-time World Champion, he’s won 32 Races, picked up 22 Poles, and scored 106 Podiums, and it’s safe to say that the Spaniard will go down as one of the greatest of all time! As for this year, however, it’s been very difficult for Fernando, he hasn’t been able to hit nearly the levels he did last year due to Aston Martin’s performance being far worse, and in terms of celebrating his 400th Grand Prix weekend in style, I honestly think scoring a point would be a great achievement!
