2024 Italian Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Can Ferrari Win in Their Own Backyard?

It’s been a difficult period for Ferrari recently, not scoring as many points as they would like, and it hasn’t helped them see 3 different teams (and 5 different drivers) win since their last victory back in Monaco. However, Ferrari are still third in the Constructors’, and they come into this weekend off the back of a very positive Zandvoort which saw Charles Leclerc finish on the Podium whilst Carlos Sainz recovered well to 5th. If this was a normal track and normal circumstances, the odds of Ferrari winning this weekend would be very low. However, this is Monza, home of the Tifosi, and the track is sort of an odd one out compared to the rest of the calendar. In fact, the other two tracks that I think of when it comes to being the odd ones out is Monaco and Singapore, and Ferrari won both of them!

Where Are Aston Martin?

Yes, we’re back with our obligatory question asking where the hell are Aston Martin (maybe I'll do "How Are Aston Martin next)?! The answer is simple, the middle of nowhere! Aston aren’t close to anyone in the Constructors’, Fernando Alonso is completely on his own in the Drivers’ Standings, and the car is simply mid! Like, Aston Martin’s highest finish of the last 6 Rounds was a P7 for Lance Stroll in Silverstone, and that’s not good enough for a team that was consistently on the Podium at the start of 2023. However, like I mentioned before, Monza is a bit of an anomaly, and both Alonso and Stroll have gone well around here in the past!

Franco Colapinto Has Arrived!

During the week, Williams announced that Logan Sargeant had been dropped going forward, and his replacement for the rest of the season is none other than Franco Colapinto! That was a genuine surprise, but that doesn’t mean that Franco’s not a good driver! Colapinto won Spanish F4 in 2019, he finished 4th in Formula 3 last season, and he currently sits 6th in the Formula 2 Championship! So, whilst it’s sad for Logan personally and a weird decision by Williams, I am very excited to see how Franco Colapinto gets on both this weekend and for the remaining 8 Rounds of the 2024 Season!

Can Visa Cash App RB Pull Out Something Special this Weekend?

It’s been a weird season for Visa Cash App RB this year because as decent as 6th in the Constructors’ is, they would’ve wanted more. VCARB have also dropped off a little bit recently, with neither Yuki Tsunoda or Daniel Ricciardo finisher higher than 9th since Spain. However, the reason I wanted to mention VCARB here is this team has 2 Grand Prix victories, and they’ve both come at Monza! Daniel Ricciardo has also famously won Monza back in 2021, and no, I’m not saying they’re going to come anywhere near to winning this weekend, but they could score some good points if the stars align!

Can Lando Norris Go Back-to-Back?

For a while, Lando Norris simply wasn’t in the car to win (minus Sochi 2021), and he of course finally broke that duck back at the start of May in Miami. Since then, Lando has definetly been in a car to win, but through both errors from himself and McLaren, it just hasn’t happened for him. However, everything clicked in Zandvoort, with Norris securing a terrific Pole Position before he went on to dominate the rest of the field to win by pretty much 23 seconds! I mean, that’s one way to boost confidence and belief in the team, and Lando will now be aiming to do that again, and again, and again! Will he, I guess only time will tell!
