2024 Hungarian Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Lewis Hamilton is a Winner Again!

After being a history marker and very, very dominant for a long period of time, Lewis Hamilton had to go some 2 and a half years before he could celebrate being a Grand Prix Winner again! However, Lewis won’t want to wait that long again, and if anything, he’ll think he can win this weekend which is a great possibility as Hamilton has won a massive 8 times at the Hungaroring! Also, Lewis got Pole this time last year, and given where Mercedes were 12 months ago compared to now, he and the team have a great chance of another one!

Kevin Magnussen is Leaving Haas!

It was announced earlier this morning that Kevin Magnussen will be leaving Haas at the end of this current season! K-Mag is currently 16th in the Drivers’ Championship with 5 points to his name, and he’ll end this season with 187 career Race starts. Magnussen has had an up-and-down journey in Formula 1, from scoring a Podium on his debut, to spending a year at Renault, to driving for Haas in what was the definition of a rollercoaster ride before he returned to both the sport and Haas at the start of 2022! I’m sure Kevin will do everything he can to pitch a case for a different drive from next year, but I honestly expect this to be K-Mag’s last 12 Races in the sport!

What is Going on With Charles Leclerc?

Charles Leclerc started this season so strong, finishing P4 or higher in the first 8 Grand Prix’s (including the Sprints)! However, since Charles’ dream win in Monaco, it’s been a bit of a disaster for him, with the Monegasque driver scoring just 12 points and getting lapped in 3 of the 4 Races! If you want some really damning stats, in the actual last 4 Grand Prix’s (so not including the Austrian Sprint), Leclerc has scored less points than both Aston Martin drivers and the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg! YIKES!

What is Going on With Sergio Perez?

For three years now, I’ve been writing about how Sergio Perez starts a season well, and then massively drops off. However, it feels like this year has been Sergio’s worst in a Red Bull car! Like, Checo isn’t really making it into Q3 or even sometimes Q2, he keeps making costly mistakes, and he’s just completely nowhere! I mean, Perez has scored less points in the last 5 Rounds then both Aston’s have scored in the last 4, and Checo has scored less points in the last 6 Rounds than Nico Hulkenberg has in the last 2! Like, that’s just unacceptable, and I think everyone’s a little tired of it!

McLaren Need to Sort Themselves Out!

McLaren have had an amazing resurgence over the last couple of years, particually from when they had the worst car at the start of 2022. I mean, they’re only 78 points off first place in the Constructors’ so they actually have a really strong chance of fighting for that Title come Abu Dhabi. However, if we’re being honest, McLaren should be a lot closer, and they’re never going to win Championships again if they keep messing things up! I would argue that there’s a strong argument to be made that McLaren should’ve won each of the last 4 Races, or they certainly could’ve anyway! McLaren made a slight error with Lando Norris’ strategy in Canada, Lando got a poor start in Spain, Norris got into an incident with Max Verstappen in Austria (not saying it was his fault, but still) whilst Oscar Piastri was too far behind, and in Silverstone, McLaren blew a 1-2 finish with poor decision making for both of their drivers. If everything clicks for McLaren, from both the team and driver's perspective, they can win the Constructors’ Championship this year! However, until that happens, you kind of have to question them in a similar way to Ferrari in 2022!
