2024 Canadian Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Lance Stroll Returns Home

It’s the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend which means Lance Stroll returns home looking for a strong result! Lance has had a difficult first third of the season, finishing in the points in just 3 of the 8 Rounds, but it’s worth mentioning that Stroll out-qualified Aston Martin teammate Fernando Alonso 4-0 in May Qualifying Sessions! To be fair, Lance does have a good record at his home Race, finishing in the points every time he’s finished. So who knows, the Canadian fans may just have something to shout about this weekend!

Sergio Perez is Staying!

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Sergio Perez has signed a two-year contract extension to stay with Red Bull till the end of 2026. The announcement wasn’t exactly surprising, but the length of the contract certainly was! Despite starting the season well, Checo has had a couple of really poor weekend and he now finds himself 5th in the Drivers’ Championship, behind his teammate, the two Ferrari’s, and the McLaren of Lando Norris. It feels like given what’s happened, it’s important for Sergio to have a strong weekend, but it’s worth mentioning that Perez has a very mixed history in Montreal, with his best result being a P3 for Sauber back in 2012 (massive bonus points if you knew that stat)!

Will Max Verstappen Return to the Top Step?

I cannot believe that I’m writing this for the third time in 2024, that’s wild! But as someone who has followed Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 career very closely, I can honestly say that Monaco last time out was probably Max’s most anonymous weekend for a very long time! I also have the feeling that Verstappen will be annoyed (and probably also laughing) at people’s claims that there could actually be a Championship fight, and the reigning 3-time World Champion will be looking to silence those people pretty quickly I would imagine. But, with Canada known for its curbs, this might not be the smoothest weekend for the Champ!

A Tough Couple of Weeks for Esteban Ocon

Despite Alpine’s struggles in 2024, the first part of the season was going well for one Esteban Ocon. Esteban was consistently outperforming his teammate Pierre Gasly, and things were looking promising for the former Grand Prix Winner. However, then Monaco happened! Of course, Ocon stupidly went for a move on his teammate which caused a big incident, took Esteban out of the Race, and he’s since gone on to receive a lot of crap online and he’s now lost his seat for next year! Oh, and Jack Doohan’s also replacing him for FP1 tomorrow! So yeah, it’s been a pretty terrible two weeks for Esteban Ocon, and he needs to have a strong weekend this time around at a track that he’s always finished in the points in!

Can Charles Leclerc Go Back-to-Back?

Did you know that Charles Leclerc won the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago, cause I certainly did! Of course, the Prince of Monaco finally took his crown around the streets of the Principality, but the question now is can he do it again around other circuits? To be fair to him, Charles has had a very strong 2024 Season, finishing in the Top 4 in every Race (and Sprint), and with Leclerc just 31 points off the Championship lead, he will definitely fancy himself, but to do that, he has to go and win again this weekend!
