2024/25 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 4

Aston Villa 3-2 Everton

Credit: Sky Sports

Aston Villa came from behind to win as Everton let another 2-goal lead slip! After Amadou Onana lost the ball cheaply, Everton had the lead in the 16th minute through a great finish from Dwight McNeil! 11 minutes later and it was 2-0 to Everton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed home after a lovely ball in from Dwight McNeil! In the 36th minute, it was 2-1 as Ollie Watkins finally got his goal with a close-range header! In the Second Half, Calvert-Lewin had a great chance which he completely made a mess of before, in the 58th minute, it was 2-2 as Ollie Watkins scored again! This all came from a terrible attempted clearance by Jack Harrison! And then, in the 76th minute, Aston Villa had the lead as Jhon Duran scored with a sensational strike! Dominic Calvert-Lewin did have a chance to equalise for Everton, but his effort smashed the crossbar! Overall, this is an important comeback win for Aston Villa! Villa rise to 5th in the table and they take on Young Boys in the Champions League tomorrow before they host Wolves on Saturday! As for Everton, it’s happened again to them! The Toffees remain bottom of the league and they host Southampton in the Carabao  Cup tomorrow before an away trip to Leicester!

Crystal Palace 2-2 Leicester

Credit: The Independent

A late penalty rescued Crystal Palace a point against Leicester City! Jordan Ayew had a great opportunity to put Leicester in front which he completely made a mess of before Leicester did have the lead in the 21st minute through Jamie Vardy! Eberechi Eze then had a great chance which neither found the net nor Jean-Philippe Mateta before less than a minute into the Second Half and it was 2-0 to Leicester as Stephy Mavididi scored! The pass here from Wilfred Ndidi is absolutely superb! Less than a minute later though and it was 2-1 as Mateta tapped home from close range before Eddie Nketiah came within a whisker of equalising for the hosts! In additional time, Crystal Palace were awarded a penalty after a silly challenge by Conor Coady, and it was Jean-Philippe Mateta who stepped up and scored to rescue a point for Palace! In the end, it’s still not a great result for Crystal Palace, but at least they didn’t lose! The Eagles remain 16th in the table and they take on QPR tomorrow followed by Manchester United on Saturday! As for Leicester City, they’ll be gutted to have let this 2-goal lead slip! The Foxes stay 15th in the league and they host Everton in a huge game next time out!

Southampton 0-3 Manchester United

Credit: TNT Sports

Andre Onana pulled out a good save to keep Tyler Dibling’s effort out before Southampton were awarded a penalty after Diego Dalot fouled Dibling! It was Cameron Archer who stepped up for Southampton, but his effort was saved by Andre Onana (he also saved the rebound)! Just 2 minutes later and it was 1-0 to Manchester United as Matthijs de Ligt scored with a nice headed finish in the 35th minute! The ball from Bruno Fernandes was great! Just 6 minutes later and it was 2-0 to Man United as Marcus Rashford finished well! Things then got worse for Southampton in the 79th minute as Jack Stephens was shown a straight Red card before Alejandro Garnacho sealed all 3 points for United with a goal in the 96th! In the end, it all went wrong for Southampton after the penalty miss! The Saints stay 19th in the table and they go to Everton in the Cup tomorrow followed by a massive league game against Ipswich! As for Manchester United, this is a much better result from them! United are now 10th in the league and they take on Barnsley and Crystal Palace in the next 6 days!

Manchester City 2-1 Brentford

Credit: Bitter and Blue

Another couple of goals for Erling Haaland kept Manchester City’s perfect start alive! After just 22 seconds, it was Brentford who took the lead as Yoane Wissa headed into an empty net after a mess of a clearance from John Stones! Nathan Collins then had a great chance to make it 2-0 which was saved by Ederson before Manchester City were level in the 19th minute through Erling Haaland! This was unlucky for Brentford as Haaland’s effort took a deflection off of Ethan Pinnock! Another 13 minutes later and it was 2-1 to Man City as Haaland scored yet again! What I like about this goal is Ederson got the assist! In the Second Half, Mark Flekken made a couple of important saves to keep City out (including one where Savinho really should’ve scored) before Erling Haaland smashed the post as he looked for a third-straight hat-trick! Overall, it’s another win for Manchester City! City remain top of the league and they have two big home games this week against Inter Milan and Arsenal! As for Brentford, they did well here! The Bees drop to 9th in the table and they host Leyton Orient tomorrow followed by an away trip to Tottenham!

Wolves 1-2 Newcastle

Credit: Eurosport

Sam Johnstone made a decent save to keep out Jacob Murphy before Anthony Gordon hit the post for Newcastle! In the 36th minute, it was Wolves who had the lead as Mario Lemina tapped home! This is a terrific goal for multiple reasons! In the Second Half, Jorgen Strand Larsen hit the post for the hosts before Stand Larsen had another chance which was saved by Nick Pope! In the 75th minute, it was 1-1 as Fabian Schar’s long-range effort took a big deflection and went flying into the back of the Wolves net! Just 5 minutes later and Newcastle all of a sudden had the lead as Harvey Barnes scored with a great strike! Matheus Cunha did then have a chance to equalise late on, but he was denied by a superb Nick Pope save! In the end, I don’t understand how Wolverhampton Wanderers lost this game! Wolves now find themselves inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th) and they go to Brighton on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup before an away trip to Aston Villa in the league! As for Newcastle United, this is a big win for them! The Magpies rise to third in the league and they go to Fulham next time out!

Fulham 1-1 West Ham

Credit: SportsMax

Fulham weren’t happy that a penalty wasn’t given to them after a coming together between Adama Traore and Max Kilman, and I honestly just think that this was a very odd incident! Traore then had a great chance which he somehow headed wide before Fulham finally had the lead in the 24th minute through Raul Jimenez! In the Second Half, Bernd Leno did well to keep Jarrod Bowen’s effort out before somehow, in the 95th minute, West Ham had their equaliser as Danny Ings fired home! This was a mess from a Fulham point of view, but fair play to the visitors! Amazingly, Fulham actually had a great chance to win it, but Calvin Bassey headed wide! In the end, Fulham will absolutely be kicking themselves after this result! The Cottagers stay 12th in the league and they go to Preston tomorrow before a home tie with Newcastle on Saturday! As for West Ham United, they did well to get a point here! The Hammers drop to 14th in the table and they host Chelsea next time out!

Tottenham 0-1 Arsenal

Credit: Evening Standard

1 goal was all it took for Arsenal to squeeze past Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby! Guglielmo Vicario pulled off a really good save to keep out Kai Havertz before Gabriel Martinelli had a great opportunity which he could only strike straight at Vicario! Dominic Solanke then came within a whisker of giving Tottenham the lead before Jurrien Timber came close to a Red card (a Yellow was the right decision though)! In the 64th minute, it was Arsenal who took the lead as Gabriel headed home from just a few yards out! In the end, it’s just not been a particually good start to the new season for Tottenham Hotspur! Spurs drop to 13th in the table and they go to Coventry midweek before they face Brentford on the weekend! As for Arsenal, this is a great win for them! The Gunners are now second in the league and they face two big away tests this week in the form of Atalanta and Manchester City!

Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Credit: FotMob

A terrific performance saw Nottingham Forest stun Liverpool at Anfield! After a silly mistake by Ryan Yates, Luis Diaz came close as his effort struck the post before Diogo Jota had a great chance which he could only strike straight at Matz Sels! Sels then pulled out another good save, this time to deny Alexis Mac Allister, before Sels nearly scored one of the silliest own goals I think ever! In the Second Half, Anthony Elanga had a good opportunity which he completely made a mess of before, in the 72nd minute, Nottingham Forest had the lead thanks to a great strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi! In the end, this is a shocking defeat for Liverpool! The Reds drop to 4th in the league and they go to AC Milan tomorrow before they look to bounce back at home to Bournemouth! As for Nottingham Forest, what a special result this is for them! Forest rise to 7th in the table and they go to Brighton next time out!

Bournemouth 0-1 Chelsea

Credit: Eurosport

Marcus Tavernier smashed the bar for Bournemouth with a cracking long-distance effort before Robert Sanchez pulled out a good save to deny Justin Kluivert! Nicolas Jackson then saw his effort saved by Mark Travers before Bournemouth were awarded a penalty after Sanchez wiped out Evanilson! This was such a mess from a Chelsea perspective! Anyway, Robert Sanchez redeemed himself by saving Evanilson’s penalty meaning the game remained at nil-nil! In the Second Half, Sanchez made another good save to deny Kluivert before Ryan Christie hit the side of the post! And then, in the 86th minute, Chelsea somehow took the lead through Christopher Nkunku! In the end, AFC Bournemouth completely threw away three points here! The Cherries drop to 11th in the table and they go to Liverpool next time out! As for Chelsea, I don’t know how they’ve won this game, but they have! The Blues rise to 8th in the league and their next game sees them go to London Rivals West Ham!

Brighton 0-0 Ipswich

Credit: BBC

Arijanet Muric pulled off a good save to keep Carlos Baleba’s effort out before Muric made a great double save which Kaoru Mitoma put wide on the follow-up! Danny Welbeck then came close with a free-kick effort before Liam Delap smashed the post for Ipswich! Brighton then had a couple more chances, but they just couldn’t find the back of the net! In the end, it’s one of those disappointing results that Brighton and Hove Albion have become a custom too! The Seagulls drop to 6th in the league and they host Wolves on Wednesday (in the Cup) and then Nottingham Forest on Sunday! As for Ipswich Town, they should be pleased with a point from this game! The Tractor Boys remain 17th in the table and they go to Southampton for a big game next time out!
