2024/25 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 2

Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

A crazy game at the Molineux resulted in Chelsea smashing 6 past Wolverhampton Wanderers! After less than 2 minutes, Chelsea had the lead as Nicolas Jackson was standing at the back post to head home from close range! In the 27th minute, Wolves were level as Matheus Cunha finished well after a nice pass from Rayan Ait Nouri! Cunha then came close to scoring again as he hit the woodwork before Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead just on Halftime! However, things would end up going into the break at 2-2 as Jorgen Strand Larsen scored his first goal for Wolves in the 6th minute of additional time! Just 4 minutes into the Second Half though and Chelsea were back in front as Noni Madueke’s effort took a deflection and went in! 9 minutes later and it was 4-2 as Madueke scored again before just 5 minutes later, Noni Madueke completed his hat-trick with basically the same goal he’d scored the previous 2 times! And then, in the 80th minute, Joao Felix marked his return to Chelsea with a goal as Pedro Neto provided the assist (against his former club)! In the end, the Second Half was an absolute disaster for Wolverhampton Wanderers! Wolves stay 19th in the table and they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup midweek before an important away trip at Nottingham Forest! As for Chelsea, this should be quite the confidence booster for them! The Blues rise to 8th in the league and they go to Servette on Thursday followed by a home game against Crystal Palace!

Manchester City 4-1 Ipswich

Despite conceding first, it was Manchester City who breezed past Ipswich Town! After just 7 minutes, Ipswich had the lead as Sammie Szmodics scored after some questionable goalkeeping from Ederson! Just 5 minutes later, though, and Manchester City were level as Erling Haaland converted from the penalty spot after an incident between Savinho and Leif Davis. Just 2 minutes later and Man City had the lead as Kevin De Bruyne scored after a terrible error by Arijanet Muric, and just two minutes after that, it was 3-1 as Erling Haaland netted again after a terrific pass from De Bruyne! Rico Lewis then had a golden chance which he somehow smashed the bar with before it was Kevin De Bruyne’s turn to smash the crossbar! Ipswich were then asking for a penalty after another coming together between Davis and Savinho, and this is a close one to call in my opinion! Anyway, in the Second Half, Muric made a great save to deny Haaland a hat-trick, but in the 88th minute, Erling Haaland would score from outside the box to complete his 10th hat-trick in a City shirt! Overall, it’s another positive win for Manchester City! City are now top of the league and they go to West Ham next time out! As for Ipswich Town, I can’t really be too harsh on them given who their opponents were. The Tractor Boys remain in 18th place, and they take on both Wimbledon and Fulham in the next 7 days!

Tottenham 4-0 Everton

Tottenham Hotspur picked up their first win of the season as Everton got thrashed for the second straight week! Cristian Romero had a good opportunity early on which he struck straight at Jordan Pickford before Pickford pulled out a really good save to keep Heung-Min Son’s deflected effort out! However, in the 14th minute, Tottenham did find themselves in front through a great strike from Yves Bissouma! 11 minutes later and it was 2-0 to Spurs as Heung-Min Son scored after a shocking bit of play by Jordan Pickford! I have no idea what he was doing here! In the Second Half, Cristian Romero headed home from close range to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute before Son scored again just 6 minutes later after a great solo run by Micky van de Ven! Overall, this is more like it from Tottenham Hotspur! Spurs climb to 5th in the table and their next game is a big one away at Newcastle! As for Everton, they’ve had a shocking start to the new season! The Toffees remain bottom of the league and they host Doncaster in the Carabao Cup tomorrow followed by Bournemouth on Saturday.

Brighton 2-1 Manchester United

A late, late goal was enough for Brighton and Hove Albion to pick up a massive victory at the expense of Manchester United! Amad Diallo had a great chance early on which he poorly hit well wide before, in the 31st minute, Brighton took the lead through Danny Welbeck! I have to say, the defending here by Manchester United is shocking! In the Second Half, Danny Welbeck came close again as he hit the bar from close range before, just 3 minutes later, Amad Diallo’s deflected effort found the back of the net to level the game up at 1-apiece! Amazingly, in the 70th minute, Alejandro Garnacho thought he’d fired Man United in front, but the goal was ultimately ruled out as the ball struck Joshua Zirkzee before crossing the line! And then, in the 95th minute, Joao Pedro headed home from close range to make it 2 wins out of 2 for new manager Fabian Hurzeler! Overall, what a great win this was for Brighton and Hove Albion! The Seagulls now find themselves second in the league and they face Crawley tomorrow night followed by a big away test at Arsenal! As for Manchester United, they’ll be very disappointed that they lost this game! United drop to 11th in the table and their next game is a massive one at home to Liverpool!

Fulham 2-1 Leicester

Mads Hermansen made a decent save to keep Adama Traore’s effort out, but Bernd Leno denied Bobby Reid from scoring against his former club! After just 18 minutes, it was Fulham who took the lead as Emile Smith Rowe found the back of the net in his home debut! Rodrigo Muniz then came within inches of making it 2-0 after a terrific ball in by Antonee Robinson before, in the 38th minute, Leicester were level as Wout Faes headed home from close range! Muniz then had a couple more good chances which he just couldn’t take before Kenny Tete had a good chance which he failed to hit the target from! However, in the 70th, Fulham were finally able to retake the lead as Alex Iwobi scored after Hermansen probably should’ve done better! Overall, this was an important win for Fulham! The Cottagers rise to 10th in the league, and they go to Birmingham tomorrow followed by Ipswich on Saturday! As for Leicester City, they just simply weren’t good enough here! The Foxes drop to 15th in the table, and their next two games sees them host both Tranmere and Aston Villa!

Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal

A stronger Second-Half outing was enough for Arsenal to pick up a great victory away at Aston Villa! Emiliano Martinez pulled off a really good save to keep Bukayo Saka’s effort out before Ollie Watkins had a golden opportunity which he somehow dragged wide! I’m honestly still in shock as to how he missed this one! Kai Havertz then had a decent chance which he completely made a mess of before Amadou Onana hit the crossbar, and Ollie Watkins saw his rebounded effort saved miraculously by David Raya! Wow! In the 67th minute, Arsenal finally had the lead as Leandro Trossard finished well! And then, only 10 minutes later, Arsenal had their second as Thomas Partey scored after some questionable goalkeeping by Emi Martinez! In the end, it’s a disappointing result for Aston Villa. Villa drop to 12th in the table and they go to Leicester next time out! As for Arsenal, this is a great win for them! The Gunners are now third in the league and their next game is at home to Brighton!

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

After just 13 minutes, Liverpool had the lead as Luis Diaz finished well after a swift counter-attack! In the Second Half, Mark Flekken pulled out a decent save to deny Andy Robertson before Nathan Collins had a good opportunity which he headed straight at Alisson. Liverpool then struck the post from a corner before Flekken made another good save, this time to deny Diaz a second! And then, in the 70th minute, Mohamed Salah slotted home coolly to seal all 3 points for the hosts! Overall, this is a good way to start Anfield life under Arne Slot! The Reds are now 4th in the league and they go to Manchester United for a huge game next time out! As for Brentford, they won’t be too disappointed with this result. The Bees drop to 13th in the table and they go to Colchester on Wednesday followed by a home match against Southampton.

Crystal Palace 0-2 West Ham

A great 5 minutes was enough for Julen Lopetegui to pick up his first victory as West Ham United Manager! Eberechi Eze had a good chance in the First Half which was saved well by Alphonse Areola before Odsonne Edouard had a really good opportunity which he poorly dragged wide! Eze then smashed the bar for Crystal Palace before, in the 67th minute, it was West Ham who took the lead through Tomas Soucek! And just 5 minutes later, and it was 2-0 to the visitors as Jarrod Bowen finished well! In the end, it’s a disappointing result from a Crystal Palace point of view! The Eagles drop to 17th in the table, and they have to face both Norwich and Chelsea in the next 7 days! As for West Ham United, this is a good 3 points for them! The Hammers rise to 9th in the league, and they host Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday followed by Manchester City in the league on Saturday!

Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle

Antoine Semenyo hit the crossbar for Bournemouth early on before Marcus Tavernier tapped home from close range to give Bournemouth the lead after 37 minutes! In the Second Half, Evanilson somehow put the ball wide from just a couple yards out before Neto made a good save to deny Joelinton! In the 76th minute, Newcastle were level as Anthony Gordon tapped home from close range after a great ball in from Harvey Barnes! Neto then managed to pull out another great save, this time to deny Dan Burn, before Dango Ouattara thought he’d won it for Bournemouth in the 93rd minute! However, the goal was ruled out for “handball”, and I’m sorry but this is a joke of a decision! Oh, and Joelinton then decided to completely wipe out Neto which really should’ve been a Red card! In the end, AFC Bournemouth have every right to feel hard done by here! The Cherries are now 14th in the table, and they face West Ham on Wednesday followed by Everton on Saturday! As for Newcastle United, they massively got away with one here! The Magpies now find themselves 6th in the league, and they go to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup followed by a big league match against Tottenham!

Southampton 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Nikola Milenkovic missed an absolute sitter from about 4 yards out before Morgan Gibbs-White fired Nottingham Forest in front after 70! Nottingham Forest then had a couple more chances which were comfortably saved by Alex McCarthy, and to be honest, that’s all that happened in this game! In the end, it’s another 1-0 loss for Southampton! The Saints are now 16th in the table, and they go to Cardiff on Wednesday followed by Brentford on the weekend! As for Nottingham Forest, a win is a win! Forest rise to 7th in the league, and they have to face both Newcastle and Wolves in the next 5 days!
