2023 Mexico City Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Can Sergio Perez Return to the Podium at Home?

It’s fair to say that Sergio Perez hasn’t had the best 2023 Season, but that doesn’t change the fact that he will be treated like a King in front of his home fans at this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is a track that Checo has driven well at in the past and he’s finished third in both of his home races driving for Red Bull. Really, Sergio Perez needs to finish back up on the Podium again this weekend.

Can Lance Stroll Build on a Positive United States Grand Prix?

I can admit that Lance Stroll hasn’t had a particularly great season (certainly since Austria), but he comes into this weekend off the back of a really crucial Race for him in the United States as he ended up scoring 6 points. In fact, Lance has actually finished P9 on the road in both of the last two races, but post-race penalties have either seen him get promoted or demoted up/down the field. The only problem for Stroll is besides a P6 in his Rookie Season, he’s failed to score any points in Mexico.

Will Lando Norris Make it 5 Podiums on the Bounce?

Lando Norris has been driving absolutely superbly recently and he’s currently on a 4-race Podium streak. Lando’s scored 80 points in the last 4 Rounds which is pretty amazing and he’ll be looking to continue his excellent form at a track that if I’m being honest, Norris has struggled at in the past. Still, Lando Norris is more than capable of ending the weekend with another trophy if his McLaren is competitive enough.

Rookies to Take Part in FP1

It’s that time of the year when a bunch of Rookies take part in Practice 1. For this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, 5 Drivers will take part as Frederik Vesti will drive for Mercedes, Jack Doohan will drive for Alpine, Theo Pourchaire will drive for Alfa Romeo, Oliver Bearman will drive for Haas, and Isack Hadjar will get the opportunity to drive for Alpha Tauri. I rate four of these guys very highly so I’m really excited to see what they’re able to accomplish whilst I’m also intrigued to see how Isack Hadjar gets on as he wasn’t a driver I was expecting to see in the Alpha Tauri.

Will Alpha Tauri Climb Off the Bottom of the Constructors’ Championship?

With Alpha Tauri sitting bottom of the Constructors Championship heading into this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, it’s safe to say that Red Bull’s sister team has had a very disappointing year. However, Alpha Tauri have shown more pace (in my opinion) than some of their rivals and after Yuki Tsunoda bagged 5 points at COTA last weekend, Alpha Tauri are now only two points behind Haas in the Constructors Championship and they’re then only another four points behind Alfa Romeo in the battle for 8th. Considering Yuki Tsunoda’s season and the fact that Daniel Ricciardo tends to go quite well around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez (as do Alpha Tauri in fact), there’s no reason why Alpha Tauri won’t end the weekend off the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship for the first time in quite a while.
