2023 Japanese Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Will Red Bull get straight back to Winning ways after slipping up in Singapore?

After dominating and winning every race of the 2023 Formula 1 Season, Red Bull finally slipped up in Singapore as Max Verstappen finished 5th whilst Sergio Perez could only finish 8th. I would have to expect that that was just a weird one-off round and they should really be back at the front winning this weekend. It’s also worth mentioning that Red Bull can win the Constructors’ Championship this weekend and they just need to outscore Mercedes by two points (and not getting beaten massively by Ferrari) to achieve the title.

Can George Russell claim a bit of redemption after A horrible end to the Singapore Grand Prix?

George Russell drove a really good Singapore Grand Prix until the final lap of the race where he clipped the wall and went crashing into the barriers from a Podium position. It now sort of feels like George needs to redeem himself this weekend and it feels like the only way he’s truly able to do that is by finishing on the Podium.

Can Carlos Sainz Continue his Excellent Form?

Carlos Sainz is a driver who’s excelling right now, having taken back-to-back Pole Positions in Monza and Singapore before he became the first non-Red Bull driver to stand on the top step of the Podium last weekend. I’m now really intrigued to see if Carlos can keep up his level of performances because if he can, he’ll be taking home a lot of trophies come the end of the season.

Aston Martin are a Mess!

Aston Martin were absolutely superb in the first part of the 2023 Formula 1 Season, but since Silverstone, they’ve struggled a bit and that culminated with their worst weekend of the season in Singapore as Fernando Alonso finished last of the running cars whilst Lance Stroll didn’t even start the race after wrecking his car in Qualifying. It simply can’t get any worse for the Silverstone-based team, but even if they start to pick up their pace, it almost feels like they’re guaranteed to finish 4th in the Constructors’ Championship no matter what.

Can Yuki Tsunoda pull out a Big Performance at Home?

Yuki Tsunoda has had a solid season up to this point even if he is only 17th in the Championship. However, Yuki’s been outshone by his brand-new teammate Liam Lawson in the last few rounds and it’s meant that people have started to question/ask whether or not Yuki deserves to keep his seat over Lawson for 2024. By the looks of it, it seems like Tsunoda is going to be announced as one of Alpha Tauri’s drivers for the 2024 Season which is a good thing for him, but he still needs to perform well this weekend to prove that he deserves to stay in the sport.

My Predictions for Suzuka Qualifying

  1. Max Verstappen

  2. Carlos Sainz

  3. Lewis Hamilton

  4. Lando Norris

  5. Charles Leclerc
