2023 British Grand Prix Preview: 5 big talking points heading into the Weekend

Can any of the British drivers finish on the Podium at their home race this weekend?

The British Grand Prix returns this weekend and the home crowd have 3 drivers to cheer on (more than others. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will definitely be aiming for a Podium this weekend whilst McLaren’s Lando Norris will be hoping that the car’s pace at Austria wasn’t just track-specific. So will we see a British driver on the Podium at Silverstone? Well, Lewis Hamilton has scored 3 Podium finishes this season and has scored points in every race except the Austrian Sprint. George Russell finished P3 in Spain a few rounds ago and he’s looking to make it a lot further than he did last year (he DNF’d at the first corner after colliding with Zhou Guanyu). As for Lando Norris, his P4 in Austria was by far his and McLaren’s best result of the season and Silverstone is another track, like Austria, that Norris drives well around.

Can Logan Sargeant score his first Points in Formula 1?

Logan Sargeant had by far his best weekend since the opening round of the Season last time out at Bahrain as the American driver brought the car home in P13 (even with a post-race penalty). That result moved Logan off the bottom of the Drivers’ Championship and he’ll now be looking to score his first points in Formula 1. The reason why I think Logan’s got a chance at scoring points this weekend is he goes excellently well around Silverstone. Sargeant won here in British F4 (2017), finished 2nd in both of his races here in Formula Renault Eurocup (2018), and picked up his inaugural Formula 3 victory here (2020) as well as his first Formula 2 victory (2022). It’s safe to say that Logan Sargeant likes this track.

McLaren return to Chrome

As McLaren continue to celebrate their 60th anniversary, McLaren have brought back the Chrome livery for their home race this weekend. My first memories of Formula 1 was the red and chrome Vodafone McLaren so it’s cool to see them sort of bringing it back this weekend. Instead of the red, however, McLaren have kept a bit of papaya and I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. Either way, it looks cool and McLaren will hope that it’ll bring them some extra performance (somehow).

Can Carlos Sainz replicate his inaugural Formula 1 victory?

Carlos Sainz took both his inaugural Formula 1 Pole position and race victory at Silverstone last year and I’m sure that Carlos would love to replicate that again this year. Carlos is currently ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc in the Championship, but the Spanish driver is still yet to score a Podium this season (he did finish P3 in the Sprint in Austria). He’ll be hoping that changes come Sunday.

Williams celebrate their 800th race with a Special home livery

Williams were meant to be celebrating their 800th Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend, but due to Imola being cancelled in May, their 800th Grand Prix now takes place in Hungary. However, due to everything already being planned and it being their home race, Williams have brought out a special livery which contains some more white and the Union Jack flag. Williams currently find themselves 9th in the Constructors’ Championship and whilst they probably aren’t going to add to their 114 race victories and 314 Podiums, they certainly could have a decent shot at scoring some points if everything goes right.

My Predictions for Silverstone Qualifying:

  1. Max Verstappen

  2. Carlos Sainz

  3. Lewis Hamilton

  4. Sergio Perez

  5. Fernando Alonso
