2023/24 UEFA Champions League Roundup: Quarter-Final, Leg 1

Real Madrid 3-3 Manchester City

Nothing was quite able to separate Real Madrid and Manchester City in an exciting First Leg! After less than 2 minutes, Manchester City had the lead as Bernardo Silva scored from a really clever free-kick. Bernardo did superbly well here, but questions do have to be asked about Real Madrid Goalie Andriy Lunin. 10 minutes later though and Real Madrid were level as Eduardo Camavinga’s effort took a massive deflection off Ruben Dias. 2 minutes later and Madrid had the lead as Rodrygo scored after another deflection (this time off Manuel Akanji). In the Second Half, Jude Bellingham had a decent chance which he dragged wide before Vinicius Junior smashed the ball over the bar. Both men really should’ve done better here! In the 66th minute, Manchester City were level as Phil Foden nailed his effort right into the top corner before City took the lead in the 71st minute as Josko Gvardiol scored a quite unbelievable goal! And then, in the 79th minute, Madrid were level again as Federico Valverde scored with a superb volley! In the end, Real Madrid definetly won’t be satisfied by this result. Madrid take on Mallorca before the Second Leg. As for Manchester City, they should be happy with a draw from this game. City host Luton next time out.

PSG 2-3 Barcelona

It’s very much advantage FC Barcelona heading into next week’s Second Leg! Nuno Mendes did a great job clearing the ball off the line for PSG before Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead after a poor bit of goalkeeping by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Just 3 minutes into the Second Half and PSG were level thanks to a great strike from Ousmane Dembele before Paris Saint Germain went ahead in the 51st minute through Vitinha. Bradley Barcola then hit the crossbar for the hosts before Raphinha scored again to make it 2-2 after 62 minutes played. Pedri’s ball was absolutely superb! Dembele then came close to putting PSG back in front as he hit the post before Andreas Christensen headed home to put Barcelona ahead! In the end, this is a really disappointing result for Paris Saint Germain. PSG’s next game is actually against Barcelona again so they’ll have no excuses! As for FC Barcelona, this is such a good result for them! Barcelona go to Cadiz on Saturday before the huge Second Leg back at home.

Arsenal 2-2 Bayern Munich

It’s all square heading into next week’s big Second Leg between Arsenal and Bayern Munich. After just 12 minutes, Arsenal had the lead as Bukayo Saka scored with a really nice finish. Ben White then had a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 which he shot straight at Manuel Neuer before Serge Gnabry punished them just 2 minutes later to make it 1-1 after 18! Bayern Munich were then awarded a penalty as William Saliba brought down Leroy Sane after Sane went on a fantastic solo run. Harry Kane then stepped up and scored from the spot to give Bayern the lead in the 32nd minute. Skipping all the way to the 76th minute and Arsenal had their equaliser as Leandro Trossard finished well after a nice bit of play by Gabriel Jesus. Kingsley Coman then hit the post for Munich before Arsenal wanted a penalty right at the end after Bukayo Saka and Manuel Neuer came together. This isn’t a penalty for me simply because Saka puts his foot in there. In the end, it’s not the result that Arsenal were hoping for, but they are still very much in the tie heading into next week’s Second Leg. Before that though, Arsenal host Aston Villa on Sunday. As for Bayern Munich, I think they can be happy with this result. Bayern host Koln before next Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Borussia Dortmund

It’s advantage Atletico Madrid heading into next week’s Second Leg at the Signal Iduna Park. After just 4 minutes, Rodrigo De Paul was able to give Atletico Madrid the lead after a horrible error by Ian Maatsen. Gregor Kobel then made a superb save to stop Axel Witsel from scoring against his former club before Samuel Dias Lino made it 2-0 to Atletico after Borussia Dortmund shot themselves in the foot again! In the Second Half, Kobel made another great save to deny Lino from scoring again before Dortmund had one back in the 81st minute through Sebastien Haller. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens then saw his deflected effort hit the crossbar for the visitors before Julian Brandt hit the woodwork in the 95th minute! Overall, it’s a win for Atletico Madrid, but only just! Atletico host Girona in an important league match on Saturday before the huge Second Leg in Germany. As for Borussia Dortmund, they’ll be kicking themselves here! Dortmund go to Borussia Monchengladbach next time out before they look to overturn their First Leg deficit.
