2023/24 UEFA Champions League Preview: Last 16, Leg 1

FC Copenhagen VS Manchester City

The Champions League knockout stages start with FC Copenhagen hosting the reigning Champions Manchester City. Copenhagen are coming into this game off the back of a 3-1 win over Molde and they currently sit third in the Danish Superliga. When it comes to Manchester City, they enter this game off the back of a 2-0 win over Everton and they are currently second in the Premier League. During the Group Stage, Kobenhavn finished second in Group A with 8 points whilst Man City topped Group G with 18 points. In their previous 2 meetings, Copenhagen haven’t won whilst City have won once. Overall, Manchester City are definitely big favourites heading into this one.

My Prediction: 0-3

 


RB Leipzig VS Real Madrid

RB Leipzig host Real Madrid in the return of the Champions League. RB Leipzig are coming into this game off the back of a 2-all draw at Augsburg and they currently sit 5th in the Bundesliga. When it comes to Real Madrid, they enter this game off the back of a 4-0 win over Girona and they currently find themselves top of La Liga. During the Group Stage, Leipzig finished second in Group G with 12 points whilst Real Madrid topped Group C with maximum points! In their previous two meetings, both teams picked up one win each. Overall, This should be an interesting game.

My Prediction: 0-2

 


Lazio VS Bayern Munich

Lazio host Bayern Munich in what should be a really entertaining game. Lazio are coming into this game off the back of a 3-1 win at Cagliari and they currently sit 8th in Serie A. When it comes to Bayern Munich, they enter this game off the back of a heavy 3-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen and they are currently third in the Bundesliga. During the Group Stage, Lazio finished second in Group E with 10 points whilst Bayern Munich topped Group A with 16 points. In their previous two meetings, Bayern picked up the victory both times. Overall, I think this is the tie I’m most looking forward to.

My Prediction: 2-2

 


PSG VS Real Sociedad

Despite winning their Group, Real Sociedad enter the Round of 16 stage as underdogs against Paris Saint-Germain. PSG are coming into this game off the back of a 3-1 win over Lille and they currently lead Ligue 1. When it comes to Real Sociedad, they enter this game off the back of a 1-0 defeat against Osasuna and they are currently 7th in La Liga. During the Group Stage, PSG finished second in Group F with 8 points whilst Sociedad topped Group D with 12 points. By the looks of it, this will actually be the first competitive meeting between the two sides. Overall, I’d expect PSG to win this game.

My Prediction: 2-0

 


Inter Milan VS Atletico Madrid

Inter Milan VS Atletico Madrid is definitely one of the closer games to call in the Round of 16. Inter Milan host Salernitana before this game and they currently lead Serie A. When it comes to Atletico Madrid, they play against Las Palmas on Saturday (before this game) and they are currently 4th in La Liga. During the Group Stage, Inter finished second in Group D with 12 points whilst Atletico topped Group E with 14 points. The last relevant meeting between these two sides came in the 2010 UEFA Super Cup (Madrid won 2-0). Overall, this should be a good game.

My Prediction: 3-2

 


PSV Eindhoven VS Borussia Dortmund

Both PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Dortmund will fancy their chances in this one. PSV host Heracles on Friday before this fixture and they currently lead the Eredivisie. When it comes to Borussia Dortmund, they go to Wolfsburg before this game and they are currently 4th in the Bundesliga. During the Group Stage, PSV finished second in Group B with 9 points whilst Dortmund topped Group F with 11 points. This will be the first time these two teams have faced one another since the 2002/03 Season! Overall, I’m looking forward to this one.

My Prediction: 2-0

 


FC Porto VS Arsenal

FC Porto take on Arsenal at the Estadio do Dragao. FC Porto take on both Arouca and Estrela da Amadora before this game and they currently sit third in Liga Portugal. When it comes to Arsenal, they have to face Burnley before this game and they are currently third in the Premier League. During the Group Stage, Porto finished second in Group H with 12 points whilst Arsenal topped Group B with 13 points. The most recent meeting between these two teams came back in 2010. Overall, I’d expect Arsenal to win this game.

My Prediction: 1-3

 


SSC Napoli VS FC Barcelona

The final First-Leg tie in the last 16 of this year’s UEFA Champions League sees SSC Napoli take on FC Barcelona. Napoli take on Genoa before this game and they currently sit 9th in Serie A. When it comes to FC Barcelona, they have to go to Celta Vigo before this fixture and they are currently third in La Liga. During the Group Stage, Napoli finished second in Group C with 10 points whilst Barcelona topped Group H with 12 points. In their previous 4 meetings, Napoli haven’t won whilst Barca have won twice. Overall, this could be a close one.

My Prediction: 1-1
