2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 7

Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton

Aston Villa put 6 past Brighton and Hove Albion in a shocking score line. Aston Villa took the lead after 14 minutes through Ollie Watkins and I have to say that the assist by Matty Cash was lovely. 21 minutes into the game and Villa were 2-0 up as Ollie Watkins had his second goal of the game before Villa were then 3-0 up through a Pervis Estupinan own goal. 5 minutes into the Second Half and Brighton had one back through Ansu Fati, but it didn’t mean much as Aston Villa went 4-1 up in the 65th minute as Ollie Watkins completed his hat-trick. I do feel slightly sorry for Brighton because this was another deflected goal. Jacob Ramsey added a 5th for Villa with a lovely strike before Douglas Luiz scored in the 97th minute to make it 6-1. Overall, this was a pretty great day for Aston Villa. Villa have moved up to 5th in the league and they host Zrinjski Mostar (from Bosnia and Herzegovina) on Thursday before they go to Wolves on Sunday. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, this was the sort of result that Brighton can suffer with the way that they play. The Seagulls drop to 6th in the table and their next two games are two big ones away to Marseille and at home to Liverpool.

Bournemouth 0-4 Arsenal

Arsenal took the lead after 17 minutes through a Bukayo Saka header. Bournemouth were rather unfortunate here as the ball hit the post and came straight back out to Saka who basically had an empty net in front of him. In the final minute of normal time in the First Half, Arsenal were awarded a penalty after Eddie Nketiah was brought down by Max Aarons. Martin Odegaard stepped up and scored to make it 2-0 to Arsenal heading into the break. In the Second Half, Arsenal were awarded another penalty after Ryan Christie stupidly fouled Martin Odegaard. Kai Havertz stepped up from 12 yards this time and he converted well to get his first goal for the club. Emile Smith Rowe then had a really good chance to make it 4-0, but he missed the target. However, in the 93rd minute, Arsenal had their 4th through Ben White. In the end, AFC Bournemouth’s tough start to the season continues. The Cherries are now inside the Relegation Zone (18th) and their next game is a big one away to Everton. As for Arsenal, this was an easy win for them to say the least. The Gunners move up to third in the league and they play away to Lens tonight before they host Manchester City in a huge game on Sunday.

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur left it late to beat Liverpool in a game full of controversy. Guglielmo Vicario did well to pull off back-to-back saves to deny Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson, but I do feel like Gakpo should’ve done better. In the 26th minute, Liverpool were down to 10 men as Curtis Jones was shown his first Red Card as a Liverpool player. It’s one of those where the image will always look worse than the actual tackle itself. Luis Diaz then thought he’d put Liverpool in front with a lovely finish, but his goal was ruled out for offside. How this was given offside I don’t know, but that’s just VAR and referees in general for you. Tottenham were then quickly in front after Diaz’s disallowed goal as Heung-Min Son capped off a lovely move to put the hosts 1-0 in front after 36 minutes. In the 4th minute of additional time at the end of the First Half, Liverpool were level through Cody Gakpo. I do have to question the Spurs defending as they could’ve dealt with this a lot better. Luis Diaz then should’ve sent Liverpool into the break ahead, but he failed to properly connect with the ball after a super pass from Mohamed Salah. In the second half, Alisson pulled out a couple of good saves to stop Tottenham from taking the lead before Liverpool were down to 9 men in the 69th minute as Diogo Jota was shown two Yellow Cards in the space of about a minute. And then, in the 96th minute, Joel Matip put the ball into his own net to give Spurs a dramatic victory. In the end, this was a pretty mad victory for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are now back to second in the league and their next game is away to Luton. As for Liverpool, this loss will probably hurt for a while. The Reds are now 4th in the table and their next two games are at home to Union St. Gilloise and away to Brighton.

Wolves 2-1 Manchester City

Manchester City’s perfect start to the 2023/24 Premier League Season ended as they were once again stunned by Wolverhampton Wanderers. A brilliant bit of defending by Craig Dawson denied Erling Haaland from putting Manchester City 1-0 up before Wolves took an unlikely lead in the 13th minute thanks to a Ruben Dias Own goal. Whilst Wolves were a bit lucky here and Man City were a little bit unlucky, the solo run by Pedro Neto still deserves a lot of praise. In the 58th minute, Manchester City were level as Julian Alvarez scored directly from a free kick. Whilst it was a really good strike from Alvarez, Jose Sa should’ve done better. In the 66th minute, Wolves retook the lead as Hwang Hee-Chan continued his great start to the season. Whilst Wolves were once again a little bit fortunate here, the layoff from Matheus Cuhna to Hwang was so, so smart. Overall, this is exactly the kind of result that Wolverhampton Wanderers have been looking for. Wolves rise to 15th in the table and they host Aston Villa in a Local Derby next time out. As for Manchester City, they really do struggle against Wolves, don’t they?! City are still top of the league, however, and their next two games are big ones away to RB Leipzig and Arsenal.

Everton 1-2 Luton

Luton Town secured their first-ever Premier League victory to stun Everton into silence! Dwight McNeil nearly put Everton in front with a volley, but his effort went just wide of the target before Luton took the lead through Tom Lockyer. Carlton Morris’ original headed effort came back off the bar and Ashley Young took to long to clear the ball away. Luton were then 2-0 up in the 31st minute through a lovely finish by Carlton Morris. Morris is once again scoring the key goals for Luton, but you do have to question how and why this was so simple for the visitors. Ben Garner then should’ve made it 2-1, but he missed a sitter from about 5 yards out as he headed the ball onto the crossbar. However, Everton did get one back in the first half as Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his good week by scoring for the third consecutive game. In the second half, Luton thought they’d scored again, but Carlton Morris’ goal was rightly ruled out for offside. Beto then had a couple of golden opportunities for Everton which he squandered both times by heading the ball well over the bar. In the end, this is a shockingly bad result for Everton. The Toffees drop to 16th in the table and they host Bournemouth in a big game for both sides this Saturday. As for Luton Town, this result is exactly what they needed. The Hatters are now out of the Relegation Zone (17th) and they have a big game at home to Burnley tonight before they host Tottenham on Saturday.

Newcastle 2-0 Burnley

Zeki Amdouni had a really good chance to put Burnley in front early on, but his effort was saved well by Nick Pope. Newcastle then punished Burnley as they took the lead after 14 minutes through a wonder strike by Miguel Almiron. Whilst Aaron Ramsey was poorly dispossessed, you can’t take anything away from what was a special strike by Almiron. Alexander Isak then missed a great opportunity to put Newcastle two in front before James Trafford pulled out a super save to deny Elliot Anderson. In the Second Half, Ameen Al Dakhil made a complete mess of things at the back before he fouled Anthony Gordon in the penalty area meaning the referee had no other choice than to point to the spot. Alexander Isak stepped up and scored to secure the 3 points for the hosts. Overall, it’s another win for Newcastle United and another Clean Sheet as well (5 in a row now). The Magpies move up to 8th in the table and they host PSG in a huge Champions League clash tomorrow before they play away to West Ham on Sunday. As for Burnley, they could’ve gotten a result from this game if they executed things better. The Clarets remain 19th in the league and their next two games are big ones as they face Luton at Kenilworth Road tonight before they host Chelsea this Saturday.

Fulham 0-2 Chelsea

Armando Broja did really well for Chelsea all the way up to the finish as he ballooned the ball high and wide. However, Chelsea were able to take the lead after 18 minutes as Mykhaylo Mudryk finally scored his first goal for the club. A minute and two mistakes by Tim Ream later gave Armando Broja a goal and Chelsea a two-nil lead. In the second half, Ian Maatsen nearly got Chelsea’s third goal of the game, but his effort came back off the post before Bernd Leno denied Enzo Fernandez. Tom Cairney then had Fulham’s best chance of the game, but he poorly directed his effort straight at the Goalkeeper. In the end, this wasn’t a very good performance from Fulham at all. The Cottagers drop to 13th in the table and they host Sheffield United next time out. As for Chelsea, this is a good result for them all things considered. The Blues are now 11th in the league and their next game is away to Burnley.

West Ham 2-0 Sheffield United

Sheffield United nearly took the lead early on at the London Stadium, but Cameron Archer’s effort was brilliantly blocked by Nayef Aguerd. Whilst Wesley Foderingham pulled out a good save to deny Jarrod Bowen earlier in the game, he couldn’t do it a second time as Bowen continued his great start to the season by putting West Ham in front after 24 minutes. VAR then checked for a potential handball against Luke Thomas and to be honest, I think he got away with one here. A sloppy bit of play from Gustavo Hamer then resulted in Tomas Soucek putting the ball into the back of the Sheffield United net to double West Ham’s lead after 37 minutes. Sheffield United cannot afford to shoot themselves in the foot, but they did just that here. In the Second Half, Alphonse Areola did well to deny Anel Ahmedhodzic and that’s really all that Sheffield United created in this game. Overall, it’s a win for West Ham United that keeps their good start to the season going. The Hammers stay 7th in the table and their next two games are two good ones away to Freiburg and at home to Newcastle. As for Sheffield United, they just can’t seem to find a win at the moment. The Blades stay bottom of the league and they play away to Fulham next time out.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Brentford

Brentford should’ve taken the lead early on against Nottingham Forest, but Yoane Wissa failed to make contact on the ball from about 4 yards out. Brentford were then hoping for a penalty for a handball right at the end of the First Half, but it wasn’t given and I think that’s the right decision. However, in the Second Half, Brentford should’ve had a penalty after a coming together between Wissa and Matt Turner. It wasn’t given and I felt like that was the wrong decision. Anyway, Nottingham Forest were then down to 10 men in the 56th minute as Moussa Niakhate was shown a second Yellow Card and straight after that, Brentford took the lead through Christian Norgaard. However, in the 65th minute, Nottingham Forest got their equaliser through Nicolas Dominguez. Mark Flekken really should’ve done better here, but it was still a really good header by Dominguez. In the end, it’s a decent point for Nottingham Forest, nothing less, nothing more. Forest are now 12th in the table and they play away to Crystal Palace in their next game. As for Brentford, it’s another draw for them this season. The Bees now find themselves in 14th spot and they play away to Manchester United next time out.

Manchester United 0-1 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace picked up a brilliant win at Old Trafford as Manchester United’s struggles continue. Marc Guehi had a really good opportunity to put Crystal Palace in front early on, but he poorly guided his effort wide of the target. Tyrick Mitchell then pulled off some great defending to deny Rasmus Hojlund his first Premier League goal before Crystal Palace took the lead after 25 minutes through a thumping strike from Joachim Andersen. Casemiro then came close to getting Manchester United level before he had another good chance which he failed to take (he really should’ve done better with the header). In the Second Half, Sam Johnstone pulled off a couple of decent saves to keep Man United out before Crystal Palace nearly scored an Own goal. In the end, it’s another disappointing result for Manchester United. United drop to 10th in the table and their next two games are both at home against Galatasaray and Brentford. As for Crystal Palace, they can be very happy with the start they’ve made to this season. The Eagles are now 9th in the league and they host Nottingham Forest next time out.
