2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 6

Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle

In a shocking game, Newcastle United scored 8 goals to thump Sheffield United at Bramall Lane! Newcastle were in front after 21 minutes through a goal from Sean Longstaff, but it’s a tight decision in terms of whether the goal should’ve been ruled out for a handball of Anthony Gordon. Anyway, Dan Burn made it 2-0 after 31 minutes and I have to say, the goalkeeping by Wesley Foderingham was absolutely awful. Sven Botman then made it 3-0 with a header after 35 minutes before Callum Wilson made it 4-0 with their best goal of the game so far. In the 61st minute, Newcastle went five in front through a fantastic finish by Anthony Gordon before Miguel Almiron got on the act in the 68th minute. Bruno Guimaraes then got himself a goal 5 minutes later before Alexander Isak showed composure to make it 8-0 in the 87th minute. In the end, I don’t think this game could’ve gone any worse from a Sheffield United point of view. The Blades are now bottom of the league and their next game is away to West Ham next Saturday. As for Newcastle United, what a lovely day for them! The Magpies move up to 8th in the table and they host Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they host Burnley in the Premier League.

Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

Liverpool picked up another 3 points in the league to keep their unbeaten run going. Alisson pulled out a great save to deny Tomas Soucek putting West Ham in front before Michail Antonio missed a big opportunity to put the away team in front. Liverpool were then awarded a penalty after Mohamed Salah was brought down by Nayef Aguerd. Mo Salah stepped up and scored to put Liverpool 1-0 up. In the 42nd minute, West Ham were level through Jarrod Bowen. Bowen’s headed finish was superb. In the second half, Darwin Nunez had a great chance that he executed all wrong before Jarrod Bowen really should’ve put West Ham in front, but he headed the ball straight at Alisson. In the 60th minute, Darwin Nunez made up for his earlier miss by putting Liverpool back in front. Alexis Mac Allister’s assist was World Class and Nunez’s finish was pretty good too. In the 85th minute, Diogo Jota tapped in from close range to seal the victory for the hosts. Overall, Liverpool can be happy with another victory at this early stage of the season. The Reds are now second in the league and they play Leicester (at home) and Tottenham (away) this week. As for West Ham United, it’s back-to-back defeats in the league for them now. The Hammers drop to 7th in the table and after an away game against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup, they host Sheffield United in the League on Saturday.

Brentford 1-3 Everton

Everton pulled out a great result at Brentford to get their first league win of the season. Everton took the lead after just 6 minutes through a superb strike by Abdoulaye Doucoure. Doucoure then nearly scored in exactly the same fashion as before, but unfortunately for him, his effort came back off the bar. In the 28th minute, Brentford were level through Mathias Jensen. Jordan Pickford should’ve done better here. Beto was then in for Everton, but he poorly dragged the ball wide of the target in what was a really good chance for him to put the away side in front. In the 67th minute, Everton were back in front through a James Tarkowski header. Just 4 minutes later, Everton extended their lead as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a much-needed goal. The goal came from a really poor mistake by Nathan Collins. In the end, this was another poor result for a Brentford side that just hasn’t got going so far this season. The Bees drop to 13th in the table and they host Arsenal on Wednesday before they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday. As for Everton, this was a big win for them. The Toffees are now 15th in the league and their next two games are away to Aston Villa (Cup) and at home to Luton (League).

Brighton 3-1 Bournemouth

Brighton and Hove Albion came from behind to beat AFC Bournemouth at the AMEX. Bournemouth took the lead after 25 minutes through Dominic Solanke after an appalling bit of play from Brighton Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. In additional time at the end of the first half, Brighton were level through an Own goal by Milos Kerkez. Kerkez will certainly be disappointed with this one when/if he watches it back. After just 17 seconds after play resumed for the start of the Second Half, Brighton were in front through Kaoru Mitoma. The best thing about all of this was Mitoma was subbed on at Halftime! Ansu Fati then had a great chance to double Brighton’s lead, but he missed poorly before, in the 77th minute, Kaoru Mitoma headed home to get his second goal of the game. Bournemouth could’ve got one back late on, but Lewis Dunk was there to clear the ball off the line. Overall, it’s another win for Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. The Seagulls are now third in the league and they have a big week incoming as they play away to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they go to Aston Villa on Saturday. As for AFC Bournemouth, they still just can’t quite get a win on the board in the league. The Cherries have dropped to 17th in the table and they host both Stoke and Arsenal this week.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

Neither Arsenal nor Tottenham Hotspur were able to find a winner in a thrilling North London Derby. Guglielmo Vicario pulled off a decent save to deny Gabriel Jesus from putting Arsenal in front, but Arsenal wouldn’t be denied for long as Bukayo Saka’s effort deflected off of the knee of Cristian Romero and went flying into the back of the net to give Arsenal the lead after 26 minutes. Gabriel Jesus then dispossessed James Maddison on the edge of the Tottenham area, but he poorly smashed the ball over the bar before David Raya pulled out a World Class save at the other end to deny Brennan Johnson. However, in the 42nd minute, a mistake by David Raya resulted in Heung-Min Son equalising for Tottenham. The bit of play from James Maddison was superb and so was the finish from Son. In the second half, Arsenal were awarded a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Cristian Romero. It’s one of those decisions where you’d say it’s a penalty depending on where your allegiance is. For me, it shouldn’t have been a penalty and the reason for that is the referee and VAR took so long to make their decision so they really should’ve kept the original decision which was no penalty. Anyway, Bukayo Saka stepped up and scored to reclaim the lead for Arsenal. However, just a minute later, Jorginho lost the ball to James Maddison who played Heung-Min Son in, and the Spurs Captain finished off coolly to dramatically make it 2-2 in the 55th minute! In the end, Arsenal will probably be quite disappointed with only drawing this game. The Gunners drop to 5th in the table and their next two games are away to both Brentford (Cup) and Bournemouth (League). As for Tottenham Hotspur, I was very impressed with their performance in this game. Spurs are now 4th in the league and they host Liverpool in a big game on Saturday.

Manchester City 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Two early goals were enough for Manchester City to keep up their perfect start to the season (at the expense of Nottingham Forest). It didn’t take Manchester City too long to take the lead as Phil Foden scored after just 7 minutes after a lovely assist from Kyle Walker. 7 minutes later and Manchester City were two in front as Erling Haaland headed home. At the start of the Second Half, Man City were down to 10-men as Rodri was shown a straight Red Card. I have absolutely no idea what Rodri was thinking, this was a completely stupid decision! Erling Haaland then had a golden opportunity that he blasted over the bar before Ederson pulled out a good save to deny Anthony Elanga. In the end, it’s another win for Manchester City, but losing Rodri could prove to be quite costly. City remain top of the league and they play away to Newcastle and Wolves this week. As for Nottingham Forest, they’ll be disappointed that they didn’t create more opportunities. Forest are now 12th in the table and they host Brentford on Sunday next time out.

Luton 1-1 Wolves

Luton Town picked up their first-ever Premier League point in a game were neither team walked away particularly happy. Carlton Morris was unlucky not to put Luton in front as his effort smashed off the post before Wolves were down to 10-men as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was shown a straight Red. For me, I don’t think this should’ve been a Red Card as Bellegarde was simply trying to get away from Tom Lockyer. Anyway, five minutes into the Second Half and Wolves were in front through Pedro Neto. Whilst Neto did really well to score, Lockyer should’ve done a lot better from a defensive point of view. Mario Lemina then hit the post for Wolves before Luton were awarded a penalty after the ball hit the arm of Joao Gomes. Considering the ball hit Gomes' foot first, this should never have been given a Penalty. However, the decision also wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be. Carlton Morris stepped up and scored to level the game up at 1-1. In the end, Luton can be happy with their first point of the season, but they easily could’ve and maybe should’ve won this game. The Hatters rise to 18th spot and they play away to Exeter and Everton this week. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, they’ll have very mixed feelings about this result. Wolves are now 16th in the table and they face Ipswich in the Carabao Cup tomorrow before they host Manchester City on Saturday.

Chelsea 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa continued their good start to the season as Chelsea suffered another loss. Emiliano Martinez pulled off a good save to deny Nicolas Jackson before Enzo Fernandez scuffed his shot well wide. Robert Sanchez then pulled out a good stop to stop Nicolo Zaniolo from putting Villa in front before, in the second half, Emi Martinez was able to deny Raheem Sterling. In the 58th minute, Chelsea were down to 10-men as a VAR check resulted in Malo Gusto receiving a straight Red Card. In the 73rd minute, Aston Villa took the lead through Ollie Watkins. Robert Sanchez really should’ve saved Watkins’ effort. Ben Chilwell then had a good chance to put Chelsea back on level terms, but Emi Martinez was able to pull out another quality save. In the end, Chelsea’s woes continue to grow. The Blues are now 14th in the table and they host Brighton on Wednesday before they play away to Fulham on next week’s Monday Night Football. As for Aston Villa, this was a good win for them all things considered. Villa are now 6th in the league and their next two games are at home to Everton (Cup) and Brighton (League).

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

Andre Onana pulled out a good save early on to push Zeki Amdouni’s effort wide before Amdouni then hit the post in the 15th minute. Manchester United then thought they’d gone in front after 25 minutes through Jonny Evans, but the goal was ruled out due to James Trafford’s view being blocked by Rasmus Hojlund (who was in an offside position). Right before Halftime, Manchester United took the lead through Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes’ volleyed finish was superb. In the end, it’s another defeat for Burnley in what’s been a pretty disappointing start to life back in the Premier League. The Clarets are now 19th in the table and they play away to Salford and Newcastle this week. As for Manchester United, they needed to win this game and they did just that. United have moved up to 9th in the league and they host Crystal Palace both tomorrow and on Saturday.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Fulham

Sam Johnstone pulled out a decent save to deny Andreas Pereira from putting Fulham in front before he pulled out another decent save to deny Willian. Johnstone then saved Raul Jimenez’s effort before Eberechi Eze fired just wide of the target. In the second half, Fulham should’ve taken the lead, but neither Bobby Reid nor Raul Jimenez were able to play the ball across to Pereira who would’ve surely scored. Willian then had another decent opportunity, but he struck his effort straight at Sam Johnstone. In the end, Palace were lucky to get a draw from this game. The Eagles are now 10th in the league and they face two away trips to Manchester United this week. As for Fulham, it’s a decent point for them, but they also really should’ve won this game. The Cottagers now occupy 11th spot and they host Norwich and Chelsea in the upcoming week.
