2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 4

Burnley 2-5 Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur pulled out a 5-star performance to thrash Burnley at Turf Moor! Burnley got off to a fantastic start in this one as Lyle Foster put them in front after less than 4 minutes. However, their lead didn’t last for too long as Heung-Min Son scored his first goal of the season with a lovely chipped effort. Tottenham were then in front late in the first half as Cristian Romero scored with a thunderbolt of an effort. Having said that, though, Burnley should’ve cleared the ball away properly a lot sooner. 9 minutes into the second half and Spurs were 3-1 up through James Maddison. Maddison’s finish was superb, but how he was allowed that much space I’ll never know. In the 63rd minute, Tottenham went 4-1 up as Son scored his second goal of the afternoon. 3 minutes later, Heung-Min Son wrapped up his hat-trick with a calm finish. Josh Brownhill got one back for Burnley with a nice finish in the 94th minute, but it was nothing more than a consolation goal. In the end, this has not been the start to the season that Burnley would’ve expected or demanded. The Clarets head into the first international break of the season bottom of the league and their next game is a pretty big one away to Nottingham Forest. As for Tottenham Hotspur, this has been a terrific first month for them under Ange Postecoglou. Spurs end Gameweek 2nd in the league and they host Sheffield United next time out.

Manchester City 5-1 Fulham

Erling Haaland got his first hat-trick of the season as Manchester City dismantled Fulham at the Etihad. Manchester City took the lead after 31 minutes through Julian Alvarez after a lovely ball from Erling Haaland. However, Fulham were able to respond almost immediately as Tim Ream scored in the 33rd minute to make it 1-1. Ederson probably should’ve done better. In the 5th minute of additional time at the end of the first half, Man City retook the lead through Nathan Ake, but it was in quite controversial fashion as Manuel Akanji was clearly in an offside position. I’d be very angry about this if I was a Fulham fan because I don’t really know how this wasn’t given as offside. In the second half, the ball fell nicely for Erling Haaland who finished off well to put Manchester City two goals in front. Manchester City were then awarded a penalty after Issa Diop stupidly fouled Julian Alvarez inside the penalty area. Erling Haaland stepped up, and unlike last week, dispatched superbly to put City 4-1 in front. And then, in the 95th minute, Haaland completed his hat-trick because he is inevitable! Overall, it’s been a very good start to the new campaign for Manchester City as they make it 4 wins from 4 in the league. City go into the break top of the league and their next game is away against West Ham. As for Fulham, they’ll feel hard done by in this one as they probably didn’t deserve to lose by this much. The Cottagers drop to 13th in the table and they play Luton next time out.

Crystal Palace 3-2 Wolves

Crystal Palace edged out Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 5-goal thriller to pick up their first home victory of the season. Jose Sa made a terrible error, but he was let off twice as Jefferson Lerma couldn’t get a shot away whilst Max Kilman did well to stop Jordan Ayew’s shot from going into the back of the net. In the second half, Crystal Palace took the lead in the 56th minute through Odsonne Edouard. Less than 10 minutes later, Wolves were level through Hwang Hee-Chan’s headed effort. In the 78th minute, Palace were back in front as Eberechi Eze got onto the scoresheet. 6 minutes later, Odsonne Edouard got his second goal of the afternoon to put Crystal Palace in a commanding position. Matheus Cunha was able to get one back for Wolves in the 96th minute, but it didn’t end up mattering. Overall, Crystal Palace can be happy with the 3 points from this game. The Eagles rise to 7th in the table and they play away to Aston Villa when they return from the international break. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, their start to the new season has been very mixed, to say the least. Wolves end the weekend 15th in the league and they host Liverpool next time out.

Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

Arsenal left it late to pick up a huge victory against long-time rivals Manchester United. Manchester United took the lead after 27 minutes through Marcus Rashford after a really nice ball from Christian Eriksen. However, Man United’s lead didn’t even last 60 seconds as Arsenal Captain Martin Odegaard smashed the ball home to make it 1-1. Arsenal were then awarded a penalty after Kai Havertz was brought down by both Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. However, the referee overturned his decision and that was probably the right call. In the 89th minute, Alejandro Garnacho thought he’d won it for Manchester United with a calm finish. However, it was ruled out for offside and I have to say, it was very, very tight and they should’ve really just kept their original decision. And then, in the 96th minute, Declan Rice’s effort deflected off of Jonny Evans’ leg and went into the back of the net to give Arsenal a late winner! Arsenal weren’t done there, though, as Gabriel Jesus finished superbly well to make it 3-1 to Arsenal in the 101st minute! Overall, this was a big win for Arsenal. The Gunners sit 5th in the table and their next game is away to Everton. As for Manchester United, this loss will hurt them a lot. United end Gameweek 4 11th in the table, and their next game is a big one at home to Brighton.

Brighton 3-1 Newcastle

Brighton and Hove Albion bounced back in style to beat Newcastle United as Evan Ferguson scored his first-ever Premier League hat-trick. Alexander Isak had a good chance for Newcastle early on, but he poorly scuffed his effort wide of the target. In the 27th minute, Brighton went in front through Evan Ferguson. This goal was really down to a couple of silly errors by Nick Pope. In the second half, Brighton doubled their lead as Evan Ferguson scored again with a lovely finish. 5 minutes later. Evan Ferguson wrapped up his hat-trick after the ball defecting off Fabian Schar. Callum Wilson was able to get one back for Newcastle, and that was all down to poor defending by Jan Paul van Hecke. Overall, this was exactly the kind of result that Brighton and Hove Albion needed after last week. The Seagulls sit 6th in the table and their next game is a big one away to Manchester United. As for Newcastle United, nothing’s going particularly well for them at the moment. Newcastle enter the first international break of the season 14th in the league and they host Brentford next time out.

Sheffield United 2-2 Everton

Neither Sheffield United nor Everton managed to pick up the win that they were desperately hoping for. Everton took the lead inside 14 minutes through Abdoulaye Doucoure. In the 33rd minute, Sheffield United were level as Cameron Archer scored with a nice finish. In additional time at the end of the first half, Archer’s effort struck the post before it hit the back of Jordan Pickford and went into the Everton net to give Sheffield United the lead heading into the break. 10 minutes into the second half and Everton were back level as Arnaut Danjuma got on the scoresheet. The ball across from Nathan Patterson was superb. And then, in the 99th minute, Sheffield United came so close to scoring a winner, but they were denied by two World Class saves by Jordan Pickford. In the end, Sheffield United will be slightly disappointed that they haven’t come away with their first victory of the season. The Blades currently sit 17th in the table and their next game is away to Tottenham. As for Everton, it felt like they needed to win this game. The Toffees remain inside the Relegation Zone (18th) and they host Arsenal next time out.

Brentford 2-2 Bournemouth

Brentford left it late to snatch a point at home to AFC Bournemouth. Brentford took the lead after 7 minutes after Mathias Jensen caught out Bournemouth Goalie Neto with a direct free kick. Kevin Schade then had a good chance to make it 2-0 to Brentford, but Neto pulled off a good save to kick the ball onto the post. Bournemouth were then level in the 30th minute as Dominik Solanke scored with a really nice finish. In the second half, Yoane Wissa had a good chance to put Brentford back in front, but his effort could only hit the post. Keane Lewis-Potter then missed an open goal as his effort came back off the post! In the 77th minute, Rico Henry made a horrible error which led to David Brooks scoring a huge goal to put Bournemouth in front. However, they just couldn’t hold onto their lead as Bryan Mbeumo scored a superb goal in the 93rd point to retain Brentford’s unbeaten start to the season. In the end, this was a decent result for Brentford, but they’ll still be disappointed. The Bees occupy 8th spot after Gameweek 4 and their next game is a good one away to Newcastle. As for AFC Bournemouth, this was a decent result for them, but they’ll still be disappointed (I promise I didn’t press Copy and Paste). The Cherries currently sit 16th in the table and they host Chelsea next time out.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa

Liverpool pulled out an impressive performance to cruise past Aston Villa. It only took Liverpool 3 minutes to take the lead as Dominik Szoboszlai scored with a lovely strike. 22 minutes in and it was 2-0 to Liverpool as Darwin Nunez’s effort struck the post and cannoned off Matty Cash and into the back of the Villa net. Liverpool were very lucky here as Nunez really should’ve scored. Joel Matip then had a golden opportunity that he squandered before John McGinn had a decent chance that he failed to take. In the second half, Darwin Nunez had an open goal to aim at, and yet he somehow guided the ball wide of the target. It didn’t matter too much for Liverpool though as Mohamed Salah scored from close range to seal the victory for Liverpool after just 55 minutes. Overall, this was a really good win by Liverpool. The Reds rise to third in the league and they play away to Wolves next time out. As for Aston Villa, they need to try and find out why they’re struggling away from home against the big teams as much as they are. Villa drop to 10th in the table and their next game is at home to Crystal Palace.

Luton 1-2 West Ham

A victory in Luton Town’s first Premier League game at Kenilworth Road just wasn’t quite meant to be as West Ham United continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-1 win. West Ham took the lead after 37 minutes through a headed goal by Jarrod Bowen. The assist from Lucas Paqueta was superb, but the goalkeeping by Thomas Kaminski certainly was not. Reece Burke then had a really good opportunity for Luton late in the first half, but he failed to direct his headed effort on target. In the 85th minute, West Ham doubled their lead through Kurt Zouma. James Ward-Prowse’s ball was on point and Zouma’s headed finish was really good. Luton were able to get one back in the 92nd minute as Mads Juel Anderson headed home, but they just couldn’t find the equaliser. In the end, it was a special night for Luton Town, but they still need more if they’re going to pick up wins in the league. The Hatters remain in 19th place and they play Fulham away when they return from the international break. As for West Ham United, they’re having a terrific start to the new season. The Hammers enter the international break 4th in the league and they host Manchester City in an exciting game next time out.

Chelsea 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest pulled out a terrific result to stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Taiwo Awoniyi had a couple of decent chances for Nottingham Forest in the first half, but he failed to hit the target on either attempt. Early in the second half, Moises Caicedo lost the ball sloppily before Awoniyi played in Anthony Elanga who finished well to put Nottingham Forest in front after 48 minutes. Willy Boly then made a brilliant block to deny Nicolas Jackson before Jackson missed a sitter not long after. In the end, Chelsea are a bit of a mess right now. The Blues drop to 12th in the table and their next game feels like a must-win away to Bournemouth. As for Nottingham Forest, their start to the season has deserved a result like this. Forest move up to 9th in the table and they host Burnley next time out.
