2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 35

Newcastle 5-1 Sheffield United

Sheffield United’s Relegation back to the Championship was finally sealed as they got smashed by Newcastle United at St. James’ Park! After just 5 minutes, it was Sheffield United who took the lead as Anel Ahmedhodzic headed home from close range. I do wonder whether Martin Dubravka should’ve done better here! Dan Burn then pulled out a massive block to deny Cameron Archer from making it 2-0 before Newcastle were level in the 26th minute thanks to a great Alexander Isak finish! Dan Burn then pulled out another big block, this time to deny Ben Brereton Diaz before Mason Holgate hit the woodwork and Andre Brooks fired the follow up just wide! 9 minutes into the Second Half and Newcastle had the lead thanks to a Bruno Guimaraes header! Newcastle were then awarded a slightly contentious penalty which Alexander Isak happily scored from before Ben Osborn scored a rather bizarre own goal! And in the 72nd minute, Newcastle had a 5th courtesy of Callum Wilson! Overall, this was a nice day for Newcastle United. The Magpies stay 7th in the table and they go to Burnley next weekend. As for Sheffield United, it’s officially all over for them now! The Blades remain bottom of the league and they host Nottingham Forest next time out.

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Arsenal picked up a massive 3 points away at North London Rivals Tottenham Hotspur to remain at the summit. After 15 minutes, Arsenal had the lead as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg headed the ball into his own net! Cristian Romero then missed a golden chance as he hit the post from a few yards out before Tottenham thought they’d equalised through Micky van de Ven, only for it to be ruled out for an incredibly tight offside! I’m sick of VAR now! 4 minutes later and Arsenal’s lead doubled as Bukayo Saka finished superbly! In the 38th minute, it was 3-0 to the visitors as Kai Havertz headed home from another corner! In the Second Half, Guglielmo Vicario pulled out a great save to deny Saka a second before Tottenham had one back through Cristian Romero after a horrendous pass by David Raya. Spurs were then given a penalty by VAR after Declan Rice kicked Ben Davies. How the referee didn’t give this on field is an absolute joke, but anyway, it was Heung-Min Son who stepped up and scored, but it wasn’t quite enough for Tottenham to get anything from the game. In the end, Tottenham Hotspur will be really disappointed with this result. Spurs stay 5th in the table and they go to Chelsea on Thursday Night followed by Liverpool on Sunday! As for Arsenal, this is a big 3 points for them! The Gunners remain top of the league and they host Bournemouth next time out!

West Ham 2-2 Liverpool

West Ham United picked up a decent point as Liverpool’s Title dreams took another big hit! Alisson made a good save to keep out Vladimir Coufal’s deflected effort before Luis Diaz hit the post. Alisson then did well to steer another deflected shot away from goal before West Ham had the lead in the 43rd minute thanks to a Jarrod Bowen header! 3 minutes into the Second Half though and Andy Robertson made it 1-1 before Liverpool had the lead in the 65th minute thanks to some fortunate deflections (it was ultimately ruled as an Alphonse Areola own goal). Areola then made a decent save to deny Diaz from making it 3-1 before Alexis Mac Allister had a great opportunity which he failed to take! And then, in the 77th minute, West Ham had their equaliser courtesy of Michail Antonio! In the end, West Ham United should be satisfied with a point from this game. The Hammers stay 8th in the table and they go to Chelsea next time out. As for Liverpool, their Title chances look all but over now! The Reds remain third in the league and their next game is a big one at home against Tottenham.

Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea

Chelsea came from two goals down to pick up a good point away at Aston Villa. After just 4 minutes, it was Aston Villa who took the lead thanks to a Marc Cucurella own goal. Nicolas Jackson then thought he’d equalised for Chelsea, but it was ruled out for offside, and the ironic thing about this is this was the best bit of composure I’ve seen from Jackson all season! Jackson then had a great chance which he somehow hit the post with before Villa’s lead doubled thanks to a great finish by Morgan Rogers. In the 62nd minute, Chelsea had one back through Noni Madueke, but I do have to question what Douglas Luiz was doing here! In the 81st minute, it was 2-2 as Conor Gallagher scored with a superb strike! Cole Palmer then had an unbelievable chance to win it which was saved by Robin Olsen before Chelsea thought they had won it through Alex Disasi. However, it was ruled out for a foul, and whilst that probably was the right decision, it was another example of why VAR and English referee’s are appalling! In the end, this is 2 points dropped for Aston Villa. Villa remain 4th in the league and they host Olympiacos on Thursday before they go to Brighton on Sunday. As for Chelsea, they’ll be frustrated here, but a points still a good result. The Blues stay 9th in the table and they host Tottenham on Thursday followed by West Ham on Sunday.

Bournemouth 3-0 Brighton

After just 13 minutes, Bournemouth had the lead as Marcos Senesi headed home from close range. Facundo Buonanotte then made a really nice solo run, but he took far too long to short before Enes Unal had a great chance which he scuffed wide. In the Second Half, Justin Kluivert had a good chance which he could only hit the side-netting with before Bournemouth had their second in the 52nd minute thanks to a great Enes Unal header! Julio Enciso then had a great chance which he put wide before he had another good chance which he just narrowly put past the post. And in the 87th minute, the hosts had their third as Justin Kluivert found the back of the net after some questionable goalkeeping by Bart Verbruggen. Overall, what a great win for AFC Bournemouth! The Cherries remain 10th in the league and their next game is a big one away at Arsenal. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, their season’s done now! The Seagulls drop to 12th in the table and they host Aston Villa next time out.

Wolves 2-1 Luton

Wolverhampton Wanderers finally picked up a win as Luton Town’s Survival hopes took another big hit! Hwang Hee-Chan had a good opportunity to score which he struck straight at Thomas Kaminski before Carlton Morris had a great chance which he headed straight into Jose Sa’s hands. Also, on the counterattack, Hwang Hee-Chan eventually found the back of the net to give Wolves the opener after 39. 5 minutes into the Second Half and Wolves’ lead doubled as Toti Gomes headed home after a poor bit of defending by Luton. Nelson Semedo then had a good chance which he failed to take before Luton got one back in the 80th minute through Carlton Morris. Overall, it’s a victory that Wolverhampton Wanderers have been craving for a while! Wolves rise to 11th in the league and they go to Manchester City next time out. As for Luton Town, they needed to get a result from this game. The Hatters remain inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th) and their next game is a big one at home to Everton (on Friday).

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester City

Manchester City picked up an important win over Nottingham Forest to keep the Premier League Title Race in their hands. After Ederson made a decent save to push Neco Williams’ effort away, Manchester City had the lead in the 32nd minute as Josko Gvardiol headed home from a Kevin De Bruyne corner. This is a great goal from a Manchester City point of view. Chris Wood then had an unbelievable chance to equalise, but he completely missed the ball before Murillo hit the crossbar just before Halftime! I don’t quite understand how Forest didn’t score twice here, let alone once! In the Second Half, Gvardiol pulled out a great block to deny Wood the equaliser before Man City had their second goal of the game in the 71st minute thanks to Erling Haaland. This was a lovely, lovely goal! In the end, it’s another defeat for Nottingham Forest, but they can be pleased with the way they played. Forest stay 17th in the table and their next game is a massive one away at Sheffield United. As for Manchester City, four more wins for them and it’ll be 4-straight Titles! City remain second in the league and they host Wolves next time out.

Manchester United 1-1 Burnley

A late Burnley penalty could prove crucial come the end of the season! Alejandro Garnacho had a great chance to score which he made a mess of before Bruno Fernandes smashed the post! Andre Onana then pulled out a mega save to deny Lyle Foster from giving Burnley the lead before Onana made another good save to once again keep Foster out. In the Second Half, Antony had a good chance which he struck straight at Arijanet Muric before Antony finally gave Manchester United the lead in the 79th minute after a terrible mistake by Sander Berge. Burnley were then awarded a penalty after Andre Onana wiped out an opposition player, and it was Zeki Amdouni who stepped up and scored to rescue a vital point for the visitors! In the end, Manchester United are simply not good enough! United stay 6th in the table and they go to Crystal Palace in a week’s time. As for Burnley, this is another good result for them! The Clarets remain inside the Relegation Zone (in 19th) and they host Newcastle next time out.

Fulham 1-1 Crystal Palace

Michael Olise had a great chance to give Crystal Palace the lead early on, but he poorly missed the target before Chris Richards had a good chance which he headed over. Rodrigo Muniz then saw his close-range effort saved by Dean Henderson before Issa Diop had a good chance which he headed over the crossbar. 7 minutes into the Second Half though and Fulham did have the lead as Rodrigo Muniz headed home from close range. However, in the 87th minute, Crystal Palace were level courtesy of a Jeffrey Schlupp thunderbolt! What an incredible goal this was! In the end, Fulham will be disappointed with a draw from this game. The Cottagers stay 13th in the league and they go to Brentford next time out. As for Crystal Palace, it’s another game without defeat for them! The Eagles remain 14th in the table and they face Manchester United in a week’s time.

Everton 1-0 Brentford

Everton secured their Premier League Safety for another year with another home win (at the expense of Brentford). After a couple of half chances, the first proper chance of the game fell to Abdoulaye Doucoure, but he completely scuffed his effort well wide of the goal! In the Second Half, Jordan Pickford made a decent save to keep Ivan Toney off the scoresheet before Dwight McNeil smashed the crossbar with a lovely long-range effort. In the 60th minute, after a scramble in the box, Idrissa Gana Gueye was there to smash the ball home to give Everton the all-important lead! Pickford then pulled out another decent save, this time to deny Keane Lewis-Potter before James Garner hit the woodwork! Overall, what a great week it’s been for Everton! The Toffees rise to 15th in the league and they go to Luton on Friday. As for Brentford, their unbeaten run has come to an end. The Bees are now 16th in the table and they host Fulham next time out.
