2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 26

Aston Villa 4-2 Nottingham Forest

After just 4 minutes, Aston Villa had the lead as Ollie Watkins tapped home after a brilliant bit of play by Leon Bailey. In the 29th minute, it was 2-0 to Aston Villa as Douglas Luiz got onto the act. 10 minutes later and Luiz had a second goal to make it 3-0 to Villa inside 40 minutes! However, Nottingham Forest were able to get one back in the 5th minute of additional time (at the end of the First Half) as Moussa Niakhate scored after some questionable goalkeeping by Emiliano Martinez. 3 minutes into the Second Half and Forest had another one as Morgan Gibbs-White finished coolly after a great through ball from Divock Origi. However, a terrible bit of play from Nottingham Forest at the back ultimately allowed Leon Bailey to score in the 61st minute to give Aston Villa a nice little cushion. Overall, this is more like it from Aston Villa. Villa remain 4th in the league and they go to Luton next time out. As for Nottingham Forest, they just weren’t quite good enough here. Forest drop to 17th in the table and they host Manchester United in the FA Cup tomorrow before they host Liverpool in the league on Saturday.

West Ham 4-2 Brentford

After just 5 minutes, West Ham had the lead as Jarrod Bowen’s effort hit the post and went in. 2 minutes later and West Ham were 2 in front as Bowen scored again! After 13 minutes, it was 2-1 as Neal Maupay got one back for Brentford before the visitors should’ve had a penalty after Mohammed Kudus shoved Sergio Reguilon over. I don’t understand this decision at all. Anyway, in the 63rd minute, West Ham’s 2-goal lead was restored as Jarrod Bowen headed home to cap off a wonderful hat-trick. 6 minutes later and an Emerson stunner made it 4-1 before Yoane Wissa made it 4-2 after his effort took a slight deflection off of Vladimir Coufal. Overall, this is more like it from West Ham. The Hammers rise to 8th in the league and they go to Everton next time out. As for Brentford, it’s another defeat for them. The Bees drop to 16th in the table and their next game is at home against London Rivals Chelsea.

Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Arsenal continued their fine league form to thrash Newcastle United at the Emirates! After 18 minutes, Arsenal had the lead courtesy of an unfortunate own goal for Sven Botman. 6 minutes later and Kai Havertz was there to double Arsenal’s lead after a brilliant team move. In the 65th minute, Bukayo Saka scored to make it 3-0 before Jakub Kiwior made it 4-0 for the hosts after yet another deflection. In the 84th minute, Newcastle were at least able to get one back as Joe Willock scored a nice-headed goal against his former club. Overall, Arsenal are flying right now! The Gunners remain third in the league and they go to Sheffield United next time out. As for Newcastle United, they’ll want to forget about this game quickly. The Magpies drop to 10th in the table and they go to Blackburn in the FA Cup tonight before they host Wolves in an important league match this Saturday.

Crystal Palace 3-0 Burnley

Crystal Palace got off to the perfect start under new Manager Oliver Glasner as they thrashed Vincent Kompany’s Burnley. After a terrible pass from James Trafford, Josh Brownhill was ultimately sent off after he pulled back Jefferson Lerma. What a stupid decision by Trafford! Odsonne Edouard then clipped the crossbar from the resulting freekick before Adam Wharton made a tackle that really should have got him his second Yellow card. This is a bafflingly bad decision to me. Anyway, in the 68th minute, Crystal Palace finally had the lead through a Chris Richards header. 3 minutes later and it was 2-0 to Palace as Jordan Ayew tapped home from close range before the hosts were awarded a penalty after Vitinho brought down Matheus Franca. Jean-Phillipe Mateta then stepped up and scored to make it Crystal Palace 3, Burnley 0! Burnley did actually have the ball in the back of the net through David Datro Fofana, but that was ruled out for offside. Overall, what a start for Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace! The Eagles rise to 13th in the league and they face London Rivals Tottenham in their next fixture. As for Burnley, everything is going wrong for them. The Clarets remain inside the Relegation Zone (in 19th) and they host Bournemouth in a big game next time out.

Manchester United 1-2 Fulham

A late, late, late goal was enough for Fulham to stun Manchester United at Old Trafford. Alex Iwobi had a really good chance to put Fulham ahead which he ultimately put wide before Diogo Dalot clipped the post from a long way out. It was then Rodrigo Muniz’s turn to smash the post before Andre Onana pulled out a good save to deny Andreas Pereira. In the 65th minute, Fulham finally had the lead as Calvin Bassey smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Harry Maguire then had a golden opportunity which he headed over the bar before Maguire got the equaliser in the 89th minute after a terrible bit of goalkeeping by Bernd Leno. And then, in the 97th minute, after a brilliant run from Adama Traore, Alex Iwobi scored superbly to earn a massive 3 points for Fulham. In the end, this is a very poor result for Manchester United. United remain 6th in the league and they face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup tomorrow before they take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. As for Fulham, what a brilliant this was for them. The Cottagers stay 12th in the table and they host Brighton next time out.

Brighton 1-1 Everton

A late Brighton and Hove Albion goal could end up proving costly for Everton’s survival chances. Ben Godfrey pulled out a really good block to stop Danny Welbeck from giving Brighton the lead before Lewis Dunk headed the ball straight at Jordan Pickford. In the Second Half, Tariq Lamptey pulled out a brilliant goal-line clearance to keep Abdoulaye Doucoure’s effort out before Everton had the lead in the 73rd minute through a thunderous Jarrad Branthwaite strike! Things then got worse for the hosts as Billy Gilmour was shown a straight Red card which is both harsh and fair enough before, in the 95th minute, Brighton had their equaliser through Lewis Dunk. In the end, this is very much a mixed result for Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls remain 7th in the league and they go to Wolves in the FA Cup tomorrow night before they go to Fulham on Saturday. As for Everton, they’ll be kicking themselves that they didn’t hold onto the win. The Toffees move up to 15th in the table (after their points deduction was reduced from 10 to 6) and they host West Ham next time out.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester City

Erling Haaland had a really good opportunity to put Manchester City in front which he poorly put wide before Ederson pulled out a pretty good save to keep out Milos Kerkez’s flying effort. In the 24th minute, after Neto originally pushed out Haaland’s effort, Phil Foden was there to tap home from close range to make it 1-0 to Manchester City. In the Second Half, Ederson pulled out another decent save, this time to deny Dominic Solanke before Neto pulled out a decent save of his own to keep out Erling Haaland. Enes Unal then had Bournemouth’s best chance to equalise, but he could only head the ball just wide of the target. In the end, AFC Bournemouth will be satisfied with their performance in this game. The Cherries drop to 14th in the table and they host Championship Leicester in the FA Cup tonight before they go to Burnley in their next league game. As for Manchester City, they got the win and that’s ultimately all that matters. City remain second in the league and they play Luton in the FA Cup tonight before they host Manchester United in a big Super Sunday clash.

Wolves 1-0 Sheffield United

Jose Sa pulled out a decent save to deny Rhian Brewster before Brewster had another good opportunity which he poorly smashed high and wide. James McAtee then had a good opportunity which he failed to take before Wolves took the lead in the 30th minute through a Pablo Sarabia header. In the Second Half, both James McAtee and Rhian Brewster had decent opportunities that they failed to take before Sheffield United once again came close to finding the back of the net. In the end, it’s a win for Wolverhampton Wanderers so they can be pleased with that. Wolves rise to 9th in the table and they host Brighton in the FA Cup tomorrow before they go to Newcastle for an important league game. As for Sheffield United, they honestly should’ve won this game. The Blades stay bottom of the league and they host Arsenal next time out.
