2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 25

Burnley 0-5 Arsenal

For the second straight week, Arsenal smashed a claret and blue side away from home! After just 4 minutes, Arsenal found themselves in front thanks to a great Martin Odegaard strike. Shout out to Gabriel Martinelli as well as him kicking a balloon after his team had scored was pretty funny! Arsenal were then awarded a penalty after Lorenz Assignon brought down Leandro Trossard. Bukayo Saka stepped up and scored to make it 2-0 to the visitors after 41 minutes. 2 minutes into the Second Half and Arsenal had their third as Saka scored again before Leandro Trossard made it 4-0 in the 66th. In the 78th minute, Arsenal had their 5th as Kai Havertz did well to score, but the defending from Burnley was shocking. In the end, it’s yet another abysmal day for Burnley. The Clarets stay 19th in the table and they go to Crystal Palace for a huge game next time out. As for Arsenal, they’re rolling right now. The Gunners move up to second in the league and they go to FC Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday before they host Newcastle in their next league fixture.

Sheffield United 0-5 Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion pulled out a great performance as Sheffield United were once again on the end of a thrashing! After just 13 minutes, Sheffield United were down to 10 men after Mason Holgate delivered a horrific tackle to Kaoru Mitoma. 7 minutes later and Brighton had the lead through Facundo Buonanotte. This was such a bizarre goal! Just 4 minutes later and it was 2-0 to Brighton as Danny Welbeck smashed home from close range on the rebound. Ben Osborn then had a goal ruled out for the hosts and I don’t really understand why before Jack Robinson scored an own goal to make it 3-0 to the visitors after 75 minutes. 3 minutes later and Simon Adingra got on the act before Adingra scored again in the 85th minute to make it Sheffield United 0, Brighton 5! In the end, Sheffield United are just woeful! The Blades remain bottom of the league and they go to Wolves next time out. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, they really needed this result and they got it. The Seagulls rise to 7th in the table and they face Everton in their next fixture.

Brentford 1-4 Liverpool

Liverpool continued their Title charge by thrashing Brentford at the Gtech. Mark Flekken made a good double save to keep out Conor Bradley and Diogo Jota, but he wasn’t able to deny Darwin Nunez who finished well to give Liverpool the lead after 35 minutes. The defending from Sergio Reguilon was really, really poor! After 55 minutes, Liverpool had their second as Alexis Mac Allister finished off what was a really good team goal. In the 68th minute, it was 3-0 to the visitors as Mohamed Salah scored after some more woeful defending from Brentford. Ivan Toney was able to get one back for Brentford in the 75th minute, but it didn’t matter for much as Cody Gakpo restored Liverpool’s 3-goal cushion after you guessed it, more horrible defending from the hosts. In the end, this was a bad performance from Brentford. The Bees stay 14th in the table and they face Manchester City tonight before they go to West Ham on Monday. As for Liverpool, it’s another strong 3 points for them. The Reds remain top of the league and they host Luton tomorrow due to facing Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday.

Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth

Martin Dubravka made a good save to keep out Dominic Solanke’s effort before he pulled out an even better save to keep Solanke out again. For me, Solanke had to score here. Anyway, in the 51st minute, after an unfortunate slip by Dubravka, Dominic Solanke was able to tap the ball home to give Bournemouth the lead. However, Newcastle were then awarded a penalty for a shirt pull and ultimately resulted in Anthony Gordon converting from 12 yards (out) to make it 1-1 after 58. In the 69th minute, Bournemouth retook the lead thanks to a great strike from Antoine Semenyo. However, after a little bit of luck, Newcastle had their equaliser in the 92nd minute through Matt Ritchie. In the end, Newcastle United just about got away with one once again! The Magpies drop to 8th in the league and their next game is a big one at Arsenal. As for AFC Bournemouth, they’ll have mixed feelings about this result. The Cherries stay 13th in the table and they host Manchester City next time out.

Luton 1-2 Manchester United

After less than a minute, Manchester United had the lead as Rasmus Hojlund capitalised from a terrible Amari’i Bell mistake to finish well and put United in front. 6 minutes later and United were 2-0 up as Hojlund scored again! After 14 minutes, it was 2-1 as Carlton Morris did well to head home after the ball deflected into his path. Casemiro then committed a pretty poor foul and I really don’t understand how and/or why he wasn’t given a second Yellow card for this. Anyway, in the Second Half, Albert Sambi Lokonga pulled out an amazing block to deny Bruno Fernandes a goal before Ross Barkley hit the woodwork with practically the last kick of the game. In the end, Luton Town will be frustrated with this game. The Hatters drop back into the Relegation Zone (in 18th) and they face Liverpool in their next game tomorrow. As for Manchester United, it’s another good win for them. United stay 6th in the league and they host Fulham next time out.

Tottenham 1-2 Wolves

Hwang Hee-Chan had a golden chance to give Wolves the lead early on, but he somehow managed to blast the ball over the bar. In the 42nd minute, Wolves had their lead thanks to a Joao Gomes header. Less than a minute into the Second Half and Tottenham were level through Dejan Kulusevski. Whilst Kulusevski did well here, Craig Dawson should’ve done a lot better. Guglielmo Vicario then pulled out a decent save to deny Pablo Sarabia before Joao Gomes scored again to make it 2-1 to the visitors after a brilliant solo run and pass by Pedro Neto. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde then had a really good chance to make it 3-1 which he failed to take before Ben Davies made a mess of a golden chance to equalise. In the end, it’s a disappointing defeat for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs drop to 5th in the league and their next game is at home to Crystal Palace in a couple of weeks time. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, what a huge win this could end up being for them. Wolves stay 11th in the table and they host Sheffield United next time out.

Fulham 1-2 Aston Villa

After a terrible throw-in by Antonee Robinson, Aston Villa capitalised and ultimately took the lead through Ollie Watkins. Leon Bailey then came close to doubling Villa’s lead as he smashed the crossbar before Alex Moreno’s goal was ruled out for offside. I’m sorry, but this is a bit of farce! Bernd Leno then made a pretty good save to deny Youri Tielemans towards the end of the First Half, but 11 minutes into the Second Half and Ollie Watkins wasn’t to be denied his second goal as Aston Villa’s lead doubled! 7 minutes later and Fulham had one back as Rodrigo Muniz scored after some terrible Villa defending. Villa were then asking for a penalty after Watkins went down after a collision with Issa Diop. How this wasn’t a penalty is just bizarre (and stupid)! Adama Traore then had a great chance to equalise late on, but he was denied by a great Emiliano Martinez save. In the end, Fulham’s small unbeaten run has quickly come to an end. The Cottagers stay 12th in the table and they go to Manchester United next time out. As for Aston Villa, they did really well in this game. Villa move up to 4th in the league and they face Nottingham Forest in their next game.

Nottingham Forest 2-0 West Ham

Nottingham Forest picked up a crucial 3 points as West Ham United lost again. Alphonse Areola made a decent save to keep out Anthony Elanga’s effort before Areola made another good save to deny Morgan Gibbs-White. 5 minutes into additional time at the end of the First Half and Nottingham Forest had the lead as Taiwo Awoniyi scored superbly. In the 71st minute, West Ham were down to 10 men as Kalvin Phillips’ horrible stint continued! Maxwell Cornet accidentally then tripped over Neco Williams inside the penalty area, and I’m a little bit baffled as to how and why this wasn’t given as a penalty. Anyway, Forest thought they’d got a second goal, but that was ruled out for offside before Nottingham Forest did have their second as Callum Hudson-Odoi wrapped up the 3 points in the 94th minute. Overall, this is an important win for Nottingham Forest. Forest stay 16th in the table and they go to Aston Villa next time out. As for West Ham, it’s yet another defeat for them. The Hammers drop to 9th in the league and their next game is a big one at home against Brentford.

Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea picked up a good point at the Etihad as Manchester City slipped up in the Title Race. Erling Haaland had a really good opportunity to put Manchester City in front which he failed to take (he headed the ball over the bar) before Ederson pulled out a good stop to deny Nicolas Jackson. In the 42nd minute, Chelsea had the lead as Raheem Sterling scored against his former club. Whilst both Jackson and Sterling did well here, the defending by Kyle Walker is absolutely abysmal, especially when you consider the fact that Walker played with Sterling for years. In the Second Half, Erling Haaland had another decent chance which he failed to take before Ederson made a great double save to deny both Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell from doubling Chelsea’s lead. Erling Haaland then had another golden chance which he again missed wildly before Man City were finally level in the 83rd minute through Rodri. In the end, this is a disappointing result for Manchester City. City drop to third in the league and they host Brentford tonight before they go to Bournemouth on Saturday. As for Chelsea, they can be happy with a point from this game. The Blues stay 10th in the table and they face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday and Leeds in the FA Cup next Wednesday before they go to Brentford in their next league fixture.

Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace

Odsonne Edouard had a good chance which he struck straight at Jordan Pickford before Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed over what was a good opportunity to give Everton the lead. In the Second Half, Jordan Pickford pulled out a decent save to deny Tyrick Mitchell before Abdoulaye Doucoure missed a really good opportunity to put the hosts in front. In the 66th minute, Crystal Palace had the lead as Jordan Ayew smashed the ball into the back of the net from just outside the box. In the 84th minute, Everton were level as Amadou Onana scored after some terrible goalkeeping by Sam Johnstone. James Tarkowski then had a really good chance to win the game for Everton, but he could only head the ball over the bar. In the end, a point is better than nothing for Everton. The Toffees climb out of the Relegation Zone (and into 17th) and they go to Brighton next time out. As for Crystal Palace, they’ll be kicking themselves for not winning this game. The Eagles stay 15th in the table and their next game is a big one at home to Burnley.
