2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 24

West Ham 0-6 Arsenal

Arsenal pulled out a stunning away performance to smash London Rivals West Ham United for 6! Alphonse Areola was able to pull out a good save to keep out Leandro Trossard’s volley, but he wasn’t able to stop William Saliba from heading Arsenal in front in the 32nd minute. Arsenal were then awarded a penalty after Areola stupidly fouled Bukayo Saka. It was Saka who stepped up from 12 yards and converted to double the visitors lead after 41 minutes. 3 minutes later and Arsenal had a third through a Gabriel header before Leandro Trossard made it 4-0 in additional time! In the Second Half, Bukayo Saka scored again to make it 5-0 before Declan Rice scored with a smashing strike to make it 6-0 after 65! In the end, it’s an absolute shocker from West Ham United. The Hammers drop to 8th in the table and they go to Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Arsenal, what a win for them! The Gunners remain third in the league and their next game is away to Burnley.

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle

Morgan Gibbs-White had a good opportunity to put Nottingham Forest in front which he failed to take before Newcastle took the lead in the 10th minute through Bruno Guimaraes. The ball from Kieran Trippier was absolutely sublime! Martin Dubravka was then able to pull out a good save to deny Anthony Elanga, but Elanga wouldn’t be denied again as the young winger finished calmly to make it 1-1 after 26. Fabian Schar was then able to restore Newcastle’s lead with a nice finish in the 43rd minute, but they wouldn’t be ahead for long as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s deflected effort found the back of the net to send the teams level heading into the break. In the Second Half, Taiwo Awoniyi was claiming for a penalty, but I think the referee made the right decision not to give it as there wasn’t nearly enough contact. In the 66th minute, after a poor pass by Anthony Elanga, Bruno Guimaraes finished well to give Newcastle their third lead of the day. In the end, Nottingham Forest will be disappointed to have lost this game. Forest stay 16th in the table and they host West Ham next time out. As for Newcastle United, this was a good win for them. The Magpies rise to 7th in the league and their next game is at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Liverpool 3-1 Burnley

After 31 minutes, Liverpool had the lead as Diogo Jota headed home from close range after a poor bit of goalkeeping from James Trafford. Trafford was then able to pull out a good save to deny Luis Diaz from making it 2-0 before Dara O’Shea headed Burnley into the break on level terms. In the 52nd minute, Liverpool retook the lead as Luis Diaz scored after some more questionable defending by Burnley. David Datro Fofana then had a really good chance to score, but he was denied well by Caoimhin Kelleher before Wilson Odobert made a mess of the rebound. Datro Fofana then had another good opportunity which he put wide before Darwin Nunez headed home in the 79th minute to secure the 3 points for Liverpool. Overall, it’s another victory for Liverpool. The Reds remain top of the league and they go to Brentford next time out. As for Burnley, they’ll be kicking themselves because they had chances to get a result from this one. The Clarets stay 19th in the table and they have Arsenal next.

Luton 1-3 Sheffield United

Luton Town suffered a disappointing home defeat whilst Sheffield United picked up a huge 3 points. James McAtee came close to giving Sheffield United the lead inside 30 seconds, but his effort went just wide of the target before Cameron Archer missed an absolute sitter! However, after a brilliant solo run, Archer wouldn’t miss again as he finished calmly to give Sheffield United the lead after 30 minutes. 5 minutes later and Sheffield U were awarded a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Reece Burke. All I’ll say about this is the United players didn’t appeal for anything. Anyway, James McAtee stepped up and scored to make it 2-0 to the visitors after 36 minutes on the clock. In the Second Half, Luton were awarded a penalty for a handball decision that was even more ridiculous than the first one. It’s almost like this was an “apology decision”. In the 72nd minute, Luton lost the ball far too cheaply and they paid for it courtesy of a great finish from Vinicius de Souza Costa. Luton did end up then coming close on a couple of occasions, but it just wasn’t meant to be for them. In the end, this is a pretty disappointing result for Luton Town. The Hatters stay 17th in the table and they get to host Manchester United in their next fixture. As for Sheffield United, they needed this win and they got it! The Blades remain bottom of the league and they host Brighton next time out.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea

After 30 minutes, Crystal Palace found themselves in front through a vicious strike from Jefferson Lerma. Just two minutes into the Second Half and Chelsea were level as Connor Gallagher scored against his old club. In the 91st minute, Gallagher scored again to give Chelsea a crucial lead right at the end. And then, in the 94th, Enzo Fernandez wrapped the game up for the visitors with a really calm and composed finish. In the end, it’s another defeat for Crystal Palace. The Eagles drop to 15th in the table and their next game is a huge one at Everton. As for Chelsea, this could be an important victory for them. The Blues move back into the Top 10 and they go to Manchester City next time out.

Fulham 3-1 Bournemouth

After just 5 minutes, Fulham found themselves in front through Bobby Reid. Lewis Cook basically gifted Fulham this goal. Neto then pulled out a good save to deny Willian from making it 2-0, but Fulham did have their second of the game in the 36th minute before Rodrigo Muniz. In the 50th minute, Bournemouth got one back through Marcos Senesi, but it didn’t matter for much as Rodrigo Muniz scored again just a couple of minutes later after a delightful ball in from Willian. Antoine Semenyo then had a good chance to get one back for Bournemouth, but he missed the target completely. Overall, this was a good win for Fulham. The Cottagers move up to 12th in the league and they face Aston Villa in their next fixture. As for AFC Bournemouth, they’re just starting to slip up a bit. The Cherries are now 13th in the table and they go to Newcastle next time out.

Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United

Manchester United continued their good run of form with a great win at Aston Villa. After just 17 minutes, Manchester United had the lead thanks to a nice finish from Rasmus Hojlund. Andre Onana then pulled out a good save to push out John McGinn’s flying effort before Onana pulled out another good save, this time to deny Ollie Watkins. In the Second Half, Andre Onana was there to deny Watkins again before finally, in the 67th minute, Aston Villa had their equaliser through Douglas Luiz. Both Alejandro Garnacho and Douglas Luiz then failed to take good opportunities before Scott McTominay headed home in the 86th minute to score a vital goal for United. In the end, it’s another disappointing defeat for Aston Villa. Villa drop back to 5th in the league and they go to Fulham next time out. As for Manchester United, what a huge win this is for them. United remain 6th in the table and their next game sees them play away at Luton.

Tottenham 2-1 Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur left it late to pick up a big victory over Brighton and Hove Albion. After Brighton were awarded a penalty thanks to Micky van de Ven bringing down Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross stepped up and scored to give the visitors the lead after 17 minutes. Jason Steele was then able to make a good save to deny Richarlison before Guglielmo Vicario pulled out a decent stop to keep out Kaoru Mitoma’s effort. In the 61st minute, after the ball originally deflected off of Lewis Dunk and onto the post, Pepe Sarr scored from the rebound to make it 1-1 after 61 minutes. Ansu Fati then came agonisingly close to giving Brighton their lead back before, in the 96th, Brennan Johnson scored in what could prove to be a big goal in both teams’ seasons. Overall, this is a big win for Tottenham. Spurs move back into the Top 4 and they host Wolves next time out. As for Brighton, it’s another away defeat for them. The Seagulls drop to 9th in the table and they face Sheffield United in their next fixture.

Manchester City 2-0 Everton

Manuel Akanji had the first real chance for Manchester City in the First Half, but his effort was blocked well by James Tarkowski before finally, in the 71st minute, Man City had the lead thanks to Erling Haaland. Haaland had barely been in the game throughout, but he showed his quality here with a great finish. In the 85th minute, City had their second as Haaland scored again, this time in proper World-Class fashion. Overall, it’s now 10 straight wins for Manchester City. City remain second in the league and they face FC Copenhagen in the Champions League tonight before they play Chelsea on Saturday. As for Everton, they were just beaten by pure quality here. The Toffees stay inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th) and they host Crystal Palace in a huge Monday Night Football clash next time out!

Wolves 0-2 Brentford

Jose Sa made a good save to deny Neal Maupay from putting Brentford in front before Sa made another good save to keep Maupay’s headed effort out. Mads Roerslev then had a great chance to score which he completely made a mess of before Brentford finally had the lead in the 35th minute thanks to Christian Norgaard’s header. I really don’t get what Jose Sa was doing here! Mark Flekken was then able to pull out a great save to deny Pedro Neto before Neto hit the post in the Second Half. In the 50th minute, Wolves thought they’d equalised after Craig Dawson headed home from close range, but it was ultimately ruled out for offside. What happened to Clear and Obvious?! Anyway, Dawson then made a terrible mistake in the 77th minute which ultimately led to Ivan Toney finishing well to secure the 3 points for Brentford. In the end, it’s a disappointing day for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves drop to 11th in the league and their next game is at Tottenham. As for Brentford, what a good win this was for them. The Bees climb to 14th in the table and they host Liverpool next time out.
