2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 23

Newcastle 4-4 Luton

An 8-goal thriller ensued in a fantastic game between Newcastle United and Luton Town. After just 7 minutes, Newcastle found themselves in front through Sean Longstaff. In the 21st minute, Gabriel Osho scored to make it 1-all before Longstaff scored again just two minutes later to make it 2-1! In the 40th minute, Luton were back level through Ross Barkley after Martin Dubravka pushed the ball straight out into the midfielder's path. In the Second Half, Luton were awarded a penalty after Dan Burn pulled back Chiedozie Ogbene. Carlton Morris stepped up and scored to give the visitors the lead in the 59th minute before Elijah Adebayo made it 4-2 just three minutes later! However, Newcastle were able to get one back in the 67th minute through Kieran Trippier before Harvey Barnes made it 4-4 in the 73rd! In the end, it’s not the result that Newcastle United were looking for. The Magpies drop to 9th in the league and they go to Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Luton Town, is it a good thing that they’ll be disappointed with only a draw? The Hatters remain 17th in the table and their next game is a big one at home to Sheffield United.

Chelsea 2-4 Wolves

Chelsea conceded 4 goals for the second-straight game in a home thrashing by Wolverhampton Wanderers. Cole Palmer fired Chelsea in front after 19 minutes, but just three minutes later and Wolves were level through Matheus Cunha. Whilst Cunha’s effort did take a massive deflection off Thiago Silva, Moises Caicedo losing the ball cheaply is ultimately what led to this goal going in. In the 43rd minute, Wolves had the lead thanks to an Axel Disasi own goal. In the Second Half, Raheem Sterling had a good opportunity which he failed to take before Wolves extended their advantage thanks to another goal from Matheus Cunha. Wolves were then awarded a penalty after Malo Gusto fouled Cunha. Matheus Cunha then stepped up and scored to complete a memorable hat-trick! Chelsea were able to get one back through Thiago Silva, but it didn’t prove to be worth very much. In the end, it’s another shocking result for Chelsea. The Blues drop to 11th in the table and they go to Aston Villa in the FA Cup midweek before they play away to Crystal Palace next Monday. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, it’s another great result for them. Wolves are now inside the Top 10 and they host Brentford in their next fixture.

Sheffield United 0-5 Aston Villa

After just 12 minutes, Aston Villa had the lead thanks to an easy tap-in finish from John McGinn. Four minutes later and it was 2-0 to Villa thanks to Ollie Watkins (after a brilliant pass from Douglas Luiz) before Leon Bailey made it 3-0 after just 20 minutes! In the 30th minute, Villa had their fourth as Youri Tielemans scored one of the most “satisfying” goals I’ve ever seen before Alex Moreno made it five-nil just two minutes into the Second Half! Sheffield United did have three good chances on the spin, but they were denied by a brilliant Emiliano Martinez. In the end, Sheffield United are a mess, but at least it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been! The Blades stay bottom of the league and they go to Luton in an important game next time out. As for Aston Villa, this is more like it from them. Villa move back into the Top 4 and they host both Chelsea and Manchester United in their next couple of games.

Brighton 4-1 Crystal Palace

After just 3 minutes, Brighton had the lead thanks to a Lewis Dunk header. In the 33rd minute, Jak Hinshelwood made it 2-0 with another header before Facundo Buonanotte scored to make it 3-0 to the hosts less than a minute later! The football from Pascal Gross beforehand was absolutely top-tier. In the 71st minute, Crystal Palace were able to get one back through a nice Jean-Philippe Mateta headed finish before Joao Pedro restored Brighton’s 3-goal advantage in the 84th minute with a great team goal. Overall, this is what Brighton and Hove Albion should be doing! The Seagulls rise to 8th in the league and their next game is a big one at Tottenham. As for Crystal Palace, they’re really struggling right now. The Eagles stay 14th in the table and they host Chelsea next time out.

Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool

Arsenal picked up a much-needed victory over Liverpool to boost their Title hopes. After Alisson initially saved Gabriel Martinelli’s effort, Bukayo Saka scored on the rebound to give Arsenal the lead after 14 minutes. Right on Halftime, after doing basically nothing for the entire First Half, Liverpool found themselves level thanks to a Gabriel own goal. In the 67th minute, Arsenal retook the lead as Gabriel Martinelli scored after a shocking defensive error/mix-up between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk. I really don’t understand what they were doing here. In the 88th minute, Ibrahima Konate was sent off for a second Yellow card before Leandro Trossard scored just 4 minutes later to wrap the game up for (the) Arsenal (after more terrible goalkeeping by Alisson). Overall, this is a huge win for Arsenal. The Gunners stay third in the table and they go to West Ham next time out. As for Liverpool, this was a really poor performance from them. The Reds remain top of the league and they host Burnley in their next fixture.

Brentford 1-3 Manchester City

After Mark Flekken pulled out a couple of good saves, Brentford found themselves in front after 21 minutes through Neal Maupay. Amazingly, it was Flekken who got the assist after some questionable defending by Manchester City. Erling Haaland then had a good opportunity to equalise, but he was denied well by Mark Flekken before Phil Foden found a crucial equaliser for Man City right on Halftime. 8 minutes into the Second Half and City had the lead as Foden scored again. Christian Norgaard then had a great chance which was blocked brilliantly by Ruben Dias before Phil Foden sealed the win for City with his hat-trick strike! In the end, Brentford just didn’t do enough to get anything from this game. The Bees stay 15th in the table and they go to Wolves next time out. As for Manchester City, it’s another win for them. City stay second in the league and they play Everton in their next fixture.

Everton 2-2 Tottenham

After just 4 minutes, Tottenham found themselves in front as Richarlison scored against his former club. In the 30th minute, Everton were level as Jack Harrison scored after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s effort deflected off of him. 4 minutes before Halftime and Tottenham were back in front as Richarlison scored again, this time with a great strike. In the Second Half, Timo Werner was denied well by Jordan Pickford, but Werner really should’ve done better here. Youssef Chermiti then had a really good chance to equalise for Everton which he failed to take, but the hosts wouldn’t be denied as Jarrad Branthwaite headed home in the 94th minute to snatch a vital point for Everton Football Club! In the end, Everton can be happy with this result. The Toffees remain inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th place) and they go to Manchester City in their next game. As for Tottenham Hotspur, this was a disappointing result for them. Spurs drop to 5th in the league and they host Brighton next time out.

Burnley 2-2 Fulham

After 17 minutes, Fulham took the lead through Joao Palhinha before Rodrigo Muniz made it 2-0 just 4 minutes later! I feel like James Trafford could’ve done much better here. Wilson Odobert then had a decent chance for Burnley which he put wide before James Trafford pulled out a couple of good saves in the Second Half. In the 71st minute, Burnley had a way back into the game as David Datro Fofana scored after a terrible bit of goalkeeping by Bernd Leno. And then, in the 91st minute, David Datro Fofana scored again to secure a huge point for Burnley. Overall, Burnley can take positives from this comeback. The Clarets stay 19th in the table and they go to Liverpool next time out. As for Fulham, what a disappointing result for them. The Cottagers stay 13th in the league and their next game is at home to Bournemouth.

Manchester United 3-0 West Ham

West Ham came close to taking the lead from a corner, but they were denied by a really good Andre Onana save before Rasmus Hojlund scored superbly to give Manchester United the lead after 23 minutes. In the Second Half, Emerson made a mess of a good opportunity before Man United doubled their lead as Alejandro Garnacho scored after a deflection off Nayef Aguerd. In the 84th minute, it was 3-0 to United as Garnacho netted again. Overall, this was a really good win for Manchester United. United rise to 6th in the league and their next game is a big one at Aston Villa. As for West Ham United, they’re struggling right now. The Hammers drop to 7th in the table and they host Arsenal next time out.

Bournemouth 1-1 Nottingham Forest

After just 5 minutes, Bournemouth had the lead as Justin Kluivert “stole” a goal away from teammate Luis Sinisterra. Ryan Yates then had a decent opportunity which he hit straight at Neto before Nottingham Forest had their equaliser just before Halftime through a great Callum Hudson-Odoi strike! In the Second Half, Philip Billing was shown a straight Red card for a questionable challenge, but that was literally the only thing that happened! In the end, a point will be a disappointment for AFC Bournemouth. The Cherries remain 12th in the league and they go to Fulham next time out. As for Nottingham Forest, this is a decent point for them. Forest host Bristol City in the FA Cup tomorrow before they host Newcastle on Saturday Night Football.
